Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
I’ve gone down a rabbit hole because I’m trying to avoid doing my job so here is a comparison of Jaden Springer & Jalen Green’s G-League numbers when they were both 19 years old.
Jaden Springer G-League per 36 numbers:
20.1pts/6.4rbs/3.8assts/2.5TO/2.1stls/1.2blks
45/24/65 shooting splits & drew 4.5 FTs per 36
Net rating 6.7
Jalen Green G-League per 36 numbers:
20.2pts/4.6rbs/3.1assts/3.0TO/1.7stls/0.3blks
46/36/83 shooting splits & drew 2.6 FTs per 36
Net rating -7.7

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
The "65" is the only thing that's really alarming considering he was such an accurate FT shooter in college.
He was locked in though in the G League playoffs. Went 11/11 in 4 games.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
Looking at his game logs he was 10 for 25 (40%) from the line in his first 7 games. But he went 31 for 39 (82%) in his final 12 games. Maybe he corrected his form or it could just be pure randomness in a small sample so who knows. Either way I’d probably expect the way he ended the year to be more representative given his historical percentages.
I blame Adam Silver for me scrolling through Jaden Springer G League game logs in June. This is what happens when you drag out the Finals to play every 3rd day.

Hard as it might be to defend Silver on anything, I would guess that he has zero to do with the scheduling of playoff games. TV is the king and makes all the rules in that department. Same thing in all pro and big time college sports.

Time to throw all the stock in Springer's development because we need it now more than ever.

Can't imagine Morey is done shuffling. Certainly hope we don't have to lean on 19 year old Jaden Springer, but him developing into a serviceable 2-way rotation player would be quietly huge for us.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
What’s the selling point on springer?
Are guards who have the physique of being able to play the 3&4 position the future of the league? The Bruce Brown or Melton type players? This would explain why we drafted Zhaire Williams or Springer and played a lot of George Hill at the 3, Thybulle and Green at the 3&4 in the last two seasons.
Basketball turning from charles oakley/horace grant type PFs to stretch 4 to small ball 5 to microball 5 to 3 guard and 4 guard unit basketball?
So yeah at this stage.. my vision for springer is less of a guard. I think being a Bruce Brown or Royce O’Neal type player is more favorable to his evolution as a player.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
I like Springer and can see him becoming a contributor in time similar to Melton.
But not for another year or two. It will be a pleasant surprise if he can seize the 4th guard spot in the rotation this year.

Another year seems like a more realistic timeline. His defense might be ahead of his offense at this juncture. Still needs to hone and develop more of a catch-and-shoot mentality.Arsenal wrote:I like Springer and can see him becoming a contributor in time similar to Melton.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
I think he needs to get on the court early and often to start the season. I want to see a 15 mpg role for him, at the minimum. At 6'4" 200+ pounds, he has decent enough size to play some smallball SF minutes (a way to squeeze in some playing time for him).
If Springer shows enough offensive skill, we struck gold and we have another young stud in the rotation.

Hopefully he picks Melton's mind on how to become a volume, quick release three point shooter.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
Springer's development plan is all over the place. Not sure the organization knows what path to put him on.
In college, ran pseudo PG and showed extremely skilled shooting touch. In the G-League, played more off the ball as a cutter and slasher and put in work in the mid-range (shooting went to ****).
I wish either the organization or he, himself, realize that to get on the court, you need to be a catch and shoot three point shooter. Then you can gradually assume a bigger role on offense once you've established two-way ability.

I think that’d be great if he’s ready for it but don’t think there’s any reason to force it. I’m never sure about how much in game PT helps development, I always suspect it helps way way less than most fans assume (since they basically think that’s what development is) and I tend to think it really helps only if you’re playing a specific role that you’re able to fill (which you can grow from). If he can already effectively shoot, pass, and take a couple dribbles and make decision at full NBA speed and against full NBA defenders, then I’m all for him stepping into a rotation role. If he’s not there yet though there’s not much point in having him out just yet. I think coaches can generally tell from practice if a player is ready for that role, and I do believe the best way to develop is going from your role outwards (rather than learning everything on the fly and finding your role within that—that only works best if you’re particularly talented and can impact the game in many ways right away.)

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
I think like nearly everything else in life, just going out there and doing it is how you develop at things.
I don't really mind if Springer looks lost for 10 games or even 20 games. Just get him out there on the court because things are going to eventually click for him and then you have a legitimate asset for your playoff rotation.

I feel too snake bitten by Zhaire to think this guy will be anything. Hopefully he doesn't have any unforeseen allergies.
Regardless, I can't imagine he's in their plans for the rotation, particularly after the Melton deal... But I'd love to be wrong.

Not sure how the minutes are going to shake out for all these guards too short/skinny to guard wings. I think we have to make a call before the season to move either Milton or Joe, to clear some minutes for Springer.

At least Jaden didn't play PF in college

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
There should be minutes to go around beyond the core 3 guard rotation, especially if we’re trying to load manage Harden throughout the year. COVID, (hopefully) minor injuries, etc.
Ideally we’d be able to play Springer like GS did Kuminga. Play him sparingly at first but give him opportunity to grow when guys are out.

Re: Welcome Jaden Springer
Morey seems pretty bullish on Springer taking a leap this year:

Yeah, I get they're not exactly the same guy... But they're both small, raw guards, and we're hearing the same exact things we heard with Zhaire. "He's so young", "he's already there defensively", "NBA body", the offense is "coming along".
Nothing that's been said about him makes him sound like he's ready to contribute next year.
