I'm all for feminism, gender equality, and equal pay, but the physical differences of men's and women's professional athletics makes a comparison between the two unfair. Della Donne has a shot that is better than most NBA players, and she's got a great skill set. It's just not a feasible expectation to think that even the best WNBA player could compete with the physicality of the NBA game.

^this, the comparison is unfair and frankly, ridiculous...this thread is really stupid. She's an incredibly skilled player and a surefire HoFer, but the physical differences are the reason why basketball is divided by gender. It doesn't take anything away from her at all as a player, because in her side of the sport she's an elite talent.

Elena Delle Donne is a beast, her advanced stats are absolutely filthy:

https://www.basketball-reference.com/wnba/players/d/delleel01w.html

I mean I'm sure she has played pick up games against guys before (what female baller hasn't? I remember playing w/ women from time to time back when I used to play street ball) but the NBA is a whole other ball game. You're talking about elite physical athletic talent and speed. It's no sense in even trying to put her in that situation.

Because that's the crux of the issue here, Elena Delle Donne is a heck of a basketball player, but she would be the least athletic player in the NBA, even compared to 7 plus footers.

Serena got killed in an exhibition by a man.

A woman can out swim a man with distance period. Our biology and greater bone density gives us the edge. Why do you think people in the USA are so upset about the high people who identify as women but were born a male.

Even the worst NBA player is light years ahead of any woman physically. There’s a big difference between a 6’5” man and a 6’5” woman (even at the same weight) in terms of strength, athleticism, explosiveness, muscle density, etc...

Sorry but it’s not happening as anything other than a PC gimmick. The NFL was also trying to promote a female football player at the college level a couple months ago. They even gave her a commercial.

delle donne can dunk. i've seen her do it in practice

women have 60% of the muscle men do on average but it doesn't mean every man has more than every woman. there can be various women with varying degrees of muscle strength. so some would be at less of a physical deficit. weight is just an initial estimate of strength. but if there's a physical deficit it can be overcome if someone is good enough as doc rivers said. muggsy bogues had a big physical deficit being 5'3" 135 lb yet he played in the nba

I can't think of a woman who'd even be remotely close. Serena isn't athletic enough for division 3 basketball...

That being said, I don't think so. Males are naturally athletically superior to females. Picking the best athletes and putting a great female athlete against them would only make it worse.

I do think that if there was a WNBA player that had a chance it would've been a Delle Donne/Griner hybrid.

There is ZERO chance any WNBA player could compete in D3 basketball, let alone D1. That's absolutely LAUGHABLE. D1 women's teams practice with guys who can't make D3 schools and they get killed. And I mean killed. We're talking random pickup game level college guys.

not a crazy take at all

the US womens national soccer team...best women players in the entire world...got smacked by a U15 boys team...

https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/a-dallas-fc-under-15-boys-squad-beat-the-u-s-womens-national-team-in-a-scrimmage/

people continue to underestimate the insane variance in physical ability between men and women...and basketball has even more of a physical requirement than soccer.

no disrespect to the womens game, but I'd be shocked if she would see any meaningful play time in either D1 or D2 tbh.

This is a little off topic but if you guys are missing basketball right now, the WNBA playoffs have been really good so far. The Aces-Sky game last night was absolutely lit. Super crazy ending on a steal and made half-court heave to win the game for Las Vegas.

She would get destroyed at the NBA level.

Grayson Allen would average 40 ppg in the WNBA.

It's not a fair comparison. It's like comparing bicycles to motorcycles.

Bruh I'd say Grayson Allen would average like 60 ppg lol.
An NBA wing player in the WNBA?

His size, speed and strength and skill would just destroy everyone. It would be like MVP Lebron playing against high school kids.

Yeah I'm assuming he might not play the full game due to blowouts and what not.

Aren't WNBA games only 40 minutes? So he might be pressed for time.

THis actually surprises me but an wnba allstar team losing to some mediocre college mens team would not at all surprise me.

It just shows the drastic difference athletically between women and men. And again soccer is a sport less dependent on size and athleticism, and our women are the best in the world and our men are below average. If there was a sport that the difference between men and women wouldnt matter as much, it would be soccer. Now take a sport that is far more dependent on size and athleticism, and is a sport that America chugs out elite prospects every single year and has been a linchpin for American sports in schools for decades. Take Maryland Eastern Shore university (worst D1 school last year) and put together the WNBA 1st and 2nd all WNBA teams against them. The WNBA team would get destroyed.

i mean, even Serena Williams, arguably the greatest woman athlete of all time and of the GOAT women tennis players...got trounced by a dude ranked 203 in the world...

No. 203 sweeps Williams

At the height of the Williams boom in 1998, an unofficial game took place in Australia after Serena and Venus claimed that no male player outside the top 200 could beat them.Up stepped a German known as Karsten Braasch who was ranked 203rd in the world and after first beating Serena 6-1, he then disposed of Venus 6-2.

this is just not a legit question unfortunately

Fun story - I went to Illinois. We did not have varsity volleyball... but I had been a really good volleyball player in high school (not D1 scholarship level good - but all conference my junior and senior years). We did have a men's club team. I was on the team my first couple of years there. Our women's team was top-25 in the country. We would occasionally scrimmage them. It was an absolute bloodbath. We actually held back on hitting as hard as we normally did at the request of the women's coach. I was the only freshman on the first team - so I actually got to play against the women. In some ways it just wasn't fair as the women's net is a foot shorter than the mens :-)

Perhaps the Miami Heat could give her a chance to play if the BangBros Center arena deal falls through.

when i first saw that i thought "dang what an ending". once in a lifetime stuff with steal and the win. when i watched it more closely and saw that she chucked it with 7 seconds to go when they had the 3 on 1 break with a wide open teammate practically two steps away from the basket ...what an idiot. complete lack of awareness of clock, situation..JR Smith level stuff. she'd be ridiculed and rightfully so.

Also, since it's still the offseason and this inevitably comes up - no college team could beat a pro team. No, not even the Knicks or Suns (and even in those cases it would be a massive blow out in favor of the pro team).
