You guys, 80s and 90s basketball games are on Youtube. You can just go and watch any random game and look at a startling lack of movement and a whole lot of watching.

Yea, a few times a year guys got clotheslined and forearmed. Not every team had Oak and McHale and Laimbeer. In today's game those guys don't see the court because they'd get run off it. Running, moving, constantly, and always...that's why today's game is so much more taxing.

So how can Messi play 40 league games, 10 cup games, 15 champions league games, 10 games with Argentina every year? Soccer is way way more taxing than the nba if your talking about speed

Worst case in a cup game the stars might not start, but they surely will be on the bench and usually sub in with 30 minutes left

The pace was slower and the guys were smaller and slower. They also made a whole heckuva lot less money. That comes into play here as well. I don't want Giannis playing 82 games plus playoffs, plus Olympics and then give him 250 million dollars. I don't think that is in his best interest. However Kawhi sitting tonight seems a little weak. They haven't played since Sunday and their next game after Thursday is Monday. As a Bucks though I'm happy. A win tonight should help allow us to more comfortably rest our people in March against Charlotte.

Also, pretty sure pace, on average, was higher in the 80s than what it is today

So I'm thinking that while soccer is more physically demanding it's considerably lower impact than the nba. Just jumping and landing in a hard surface hundreds of times is hard on someone. I'd also put it down to more rest, Messi is rarely playing now than 2 games a week, so it's a similar total number of games spread out over more of the year.

Also, Messi is the best to ever do it. So it's kinda like the Jordan argument earlier, minutes the questionable fashion sense and Hitler mustache.

Messi also isn't a 6'7"+ 230+ lb monster like some of these NBA dudes.

Ok. Robert lewendowski, Ronaldo, mane, hazard (when he was with Chelsea), etc. point being, basically all soccer stars don’t have load management. Yeah, they’ll be on the bench in lower level cup games, but usually come in and get 30 minutes and they are running way way more at a much faster pace and no breaks. If it’s because nba players jump? Ok, got me there

It sometimes 3 games in 7 days and they are straight up playing 90 minutes running and sprinting for 6-9 miles every game. They also don’t turn down national team call ups for any larger tournament. Idk, maybe I’m just the old guy now that can’t understand taking off 2 games when only 7 have been played

This is soooooo not even comparable to guys in the NFL resting in weeks 16/17 when seeding is locked in. This would be more comparable if Rodgers had gone into the Detroit game and said "naw guys. Its early in the season but I'm sitting out with it being a short week"

I feel like there's more straight line running and less jumping in soccer. Fewer ballistic movements. Could be wrong. Also what you described is still ~35 fewer games than NBA including playoffs.

Perfect analogy. It was a forgone conclusion the pats were making the playoffs before the season. Brady and Edelman should have sat out games 2, 5, 7, 14. Just to be fresh come playoffs.

I really don't know why Steger is beating a drum here. Soccer is far lower in terms of body impact on a game to game basis, it's distance running with bursts. (You've got Eliud Kipchoge winning the Olympic Gold Medal in the Marathon at Rio at the age of 32 when logic says he should be slower for example.) Guys extend their careers because vet savvy is a very very real thing. Skill level and the way you see the game is a very very real thing. The game isn't played in close quarters like the NBA. There's space everywhere, there's movement, there's touch. Nuance can go a really really long way in soccer. It doesn't work like that in the NBA.

This is before you even get into the amount stress gets put on these guys bodies carrying around the weight and muscle they do.

DJ Wilson seems like a much better matchup for the Clippers (non Zubac) front court than Robin tonight.

Soccer players are basically done by the age of 30 unless they are super stars or goal keepers. The game is way harder on the body than you guys think

Messi is straight up walking around the field when his team doesn't have the ball.
