No - they don't have to. he has 4 years left on his contract.

He only has this year and next year on his contract.

no, he has 2 years after that.
The deal starts with the 2018–19 season and puts him under contract through 2022–23.

I wonder if Magic created room to sign Dwight to be their 3rd big man.

Michael Lee: In the seven years since building a HOF-worthy career in Orlando, Dwight Howard has now had his rights owned by the Lakers, Rockets, Hawks, Hornets, Nets, Wizards & Grizzlies. After Memphis waives Dwight, his next team (??) will make it eight for eight. Had so good with the Magic

We should be interested. I just don’t think it would be wise to trade away a ton of picks or youth. With Mozgov gone, I don’t like what we would have to put together to make salaries match (and that would feasibly get the trade done).

The magic would almost have to trade gordon to make any salary work in a trade for westbrook, and that just doesn't make sense.

I think it would be a huge mistake to trade for him, let alone gut the roster like others have suggested.

so... the solution is to stay mired in mediocrity with no chance of winning a chip or obtaining a stud free agent and being too good to draft one? The rest of the league just keeps wheeling and dealing and passing the Magic by. These are the moments to make moves. It's rare for a guy like Westbrook to be available. They wouldn't have to gut the entire team to do it either.

Staying away from a declining player with a crippling contract doesn't mean I think we should stay in mediocrity. It's not rare for a guy like Westbrook to be available, every year a star wants out of their situation, Westbrook is not the solution for our problems.

OKC doesn't pick up the phone unless one of BIG and/or 1st round picks are on the table.

There is NO way that OKC was trading away Russell Westbrook for Mozgov + Fournier or DJ unless there were numerous 1st round picks involved.

If the Magic are truly interested, then its more than likely Gordon + Fournier's contract that span similar duration of Westbrook's; that's the only way the Magic can stay out of ridiculously deep luxury tax for the entirety of Westbrook's 4 year's remaining.

I'm not sure that the Magic should be interested in a guy who has had TWO knee surgeries and will be earning: $38.5m at 31, $41.4m at 32, $44.2m at 33, and $47.1m at 34 years old.

Does he make the Magic contenders over the next two seasons? because after that its highly probable that he starts to decline pretty fast. He's a non-shooting PG, that is highly reliant on speed and athleticism - they don't age well, much less ones like RW who has a ton of mileage and is known for playing and training like a mad man.

What are you talking about? Vucevic's deal has a killer structure...its front loaded so that its now a good trade asset in final two years.

2019-20: 25.6% of cap
2020-21: 22.2% of cap
2021-22: 19.2% of cap
2022-23: 16.8% of cap

Lot of people would argue that paying 6th man chucker $13M and giving him 4 years is complete reach.
Nobody outside bised portion Magic fans who hate Vučević for no good reason ever said that Vučević contract is bad, especially in context of allstar and what other players of his caliber were offered.

If Knicks get Russ is there any way we could try going for DSJ? For OKC I assume Shai is their pg of the future and Knicks will not need DSJ as it porpably cause tensions as DSJ surely woudnt want to take step back.

Ross is a better player than Evan and makes less money.

Ross is a better specialist but Evan is a better all around player. Fournier gets tougher defensive assignments, he creates more for others, he is a better inside finisher, he is a better mid range shooter. Ross is better at creating his own 3 point shot and thats all.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !
