I agree about your point that Cho is waiting to see what develops in the trade market though. Love, Bledsoe/Dragic, and Monroe could all very well be moved soon.

My concern is that there is no real option we could receive via trade that puts a true quality starting wing (preferably SG) on our team. Any deal we'd make is as a facilitator to helping our competition, and we'd get back lesser players like Waiters (or others even worse than what we've got).

Minnesota also gets multiple 1st and 2nd round picks

Stephenson isn't really a splash. LeBron, Carmelo, Wade, or Bosh would've been a splash. Stephenson is just a step into a puddle that create a current, but at least it get the water moving, and that's what we need to do --- make a move

Cho is just stalling waiting for the imminent trade market to emerge for Jeremy Lamb. It's obvious.

There were only a few teams that had the money to pursue Stephenson, and if my memory serves correct it was Indiana (made offer), Charlotte, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas (signed RFA Chandler Parsons), Detroit (RFA Greg Monroe pending), Phoenix (RFA Eric Bledsoe pending), and Boston (would need to find a sign-and-trade partner)

I certainly don't think there's a secret bidding war like 'MasterIchiro' is insinuating, but it's not exactly a outlier of possibility

I knew the market was going to be tough on Stephenson due to his short history of quality production combined with his character issues, but the silence that has been going on from his front since the Pacers' movie & proposal is a bit unusual

Agree with all of this, though would add Miami on the list of teams that had money - they went with Deng. Atlanta also could have tried to make a play for Lance.

More great timing by our owner or management. Come on MJ...did you not think you might be needed for a personal meeting with a key FA target?

Apparently not, Gordon did sign the offer sheet after all

Occums razor is you have a 5-tool player 23 years old major contributor to a title contender 2 years running who sells tickets, endears and entertains fans asking for "much more" than 9 million in a market where Avery Bradley gets near 9 million and teams trying to play the "makeup issues" angle downplaying interest trying to sign him for a bargain. Occums razor is this is how negotiations roll. This kind of talent is never ignored. Occum's razor is, you don't ignore this kind of talent. We have a staredown here, a stalemate. Lance's agent is playing the silent auction and the bidders are not wanting their enthusiasm to leak and hoping other team's exuberance won't hurt their cap.

You're completely ignoring the possibility that Lance's baggage could be putting a damper on his attractiveness to teams that are expected to trump the Pacer's offer. You could very well be right about what is going on, but if I'm Lance's agent and I see teams with cap space signing other guys and walking away, I'm feeling nervous.

If I wanted to play along with your theory, I would argue that we overpaid Marvin Williams just to call the bluff of Lance's agent. We demonstrated that we're so confident that we won't have to pay Lance Hayward's salary numbers that we're going to eat into our own cap space just to take the money away from Lance.

MasterIchiro wrote:You seem highly educated Ben but I sometimes wonder if you're too old school in your negotiation manners. Like, I picture you as an honest businessman, rather than an attorney. But you could've gotten into law school. Maybe you own a small business. Maybe you come from a good family. Just guesses.

Or maybe I'm actually an attorney and this is a hilariously perfect example of how you jump to conclusions

I'm not negotiating here - we're talking about the ability to guess what's going on in a void of information.

I'm personally a little pissed off that we haven't gotten Stephenson yet. Just go for it Cho.

Lance Stephenson, G, Indiana Pacers

Indiana Pacers

You have to admire his fearlessness and feistiness, especially when it comes to competing against LeBron James, whose feuds with Stephenson over the past couple of seasons brought extra sizzle to the Pacers-Heat rivalry. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to IQ, Stephenson is nonetheless one of the more gifted all-around players in anybody’s backcourt. It makes sense for the Pacers to re-sign him for less than the max; it is debatable whether he is worth a max contract. But given the fact that teammate Roy Hibbert has a max deal, Lance will be looking for the same. The question is whether he’ll have any leverage. July 1 UPDATE: The Pacers put together an elaborate pitch, producing a “Born Ready” movie that they showed to Stephenson shortly after midnight. But a max deal was not offered along with the popcorn, and Indiana’s five-year, $44 million offer was deemed insufficient. JULY 10 UPDATE: Indianapolis Star says Pacers could move Luis Scola ($2.5M guarantee) to free more Lance money. JULY 14 UPDATE: Charlotte could be on the verge of making an offer.
