NBA Salary Cap for '09-'10 season set at $57.7 million
The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. The new Salary Cap and tax level go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 8, when the league’s “moratorium period” ends and teams can begin signing free agents and making trades.

The mid-level exception is $5.854 million for the 2009-10 season and the minimum team salary, which is set at 75% of the Salary Cap, is $43.275 million.

Hawks, Mike Bibby agree to terms
The Hawks have reached an agreement to re-sign point guard Mike Bibby to a three-year deal.Bibby's agent, David Falk, said Tuesday he has reached an "oral understanding" that will allow the Hawks to retain Bibby, who has led the team to two straight playoff appearances. "We've reached an agreement in principle that hopefully will be announced very soon," Falk said.

Bibby was an unrestricted free agent. Today is the first day NBA free agents are allowed to sign contracts. Hawks general manager Rick Sund said he could not comment. Bibby will re-sign for three years and $18 million according to ESPN.com. Bibby made $14.9 million last season.

Falk said "a number of teams had interest in him ... but I think Mike was comfortable in the environment" with the Hawks. "He wanted to stay with a team making a commitment to win," Falk said. "He has stabilized the team, given it direction." Bibby averaged 14.9 points and 5.0 assists last season.

The Mavericks would send the partially guaranteed contract of former Piston Jerry Stackhouse to the Raptors for Marion. Stackhouse, 34, has only $2 million of his $7 million salary guaranteed for this season, and whomever trades for Stackhouse can buy out the deal by Aug. 10.

The Spurs have emerged as the leader for the services of free-agent forward Antonio McDyess , Yahoo! Sports reported. The Spurs, Magic and Cavaliers are reportedly offering their full mid-level exceptions on a two-year deal for McDyess.

Pistons president Joe Dumars still wants to re-sign McDyess, but needs to clear more space to make a competitive offer.

Mavericks point guard Rodrigue Beaubois , who played professionally in France, took part in his first summer-league practice Tuesday and signed his rookie deal with the club.

As the 25th overall pick, he's slotted to receive $896,200 this season.

Beaubois was drafted by Oklahoma City, then sent to Dallas for the No. 24 pick (B.J. Mullens ) and a second-rounder.

Thank You Pistons
Well the rumors are that as of tomorrow, Sheed will be signing with the Celtics, McDyess has a good offer from the Spurs and who knows what else may happen. I would like to take this time to say "Thank You" to the Pistons for all they have done. So many have comments on what should happen, but I feel like taking some time to reflect on how spoiled I am being a Detroit Pistons fan. Since 2004 we had a core of guys who showed us and the world what team work and commitment were about. They brought us a championship and many exciting regular season and play-off games. I think because I was so spoiled I just expected it to last forever. Funny I remember the same feeling when the Bad Boys were being replaced by the younger guys. Yep, life is like that it just keeps moving. I thought the Bad Boys could never be replaced, only to see this present group come along and provide years of excitment. Like many I started to worry about the team - but as I sit here in my "Detroit Basketball Room" and reflect on the history with this team, I know there will be changes but I also know we have great leadership who will make the right decisions. I had to laugh as I thought back to when Joe brought Sheed here. Many thought he'd be trouble and what did he do? He helped us to win a Championship. Now we hate to see him go. Once again, I'm going to put my trust in Joe to lead and direct us through the time of change. As for our guys who may be leaving - I can only say "Thank You" for the many Detroit memories you have provided. Thank you for your caring charities for the communities. I must admit it will be difficult to see them in other Jerseys, but it is what it is. Life goes on, changes happen and so it goes. I also admit when I hear them introduced for other teams, it will still bring a smile to my face. Especially with Sheed, I'll still be listening for "the ball don't lie" and may accidently start shouting Sheeeeeed when he has the ball. Regardless of what happens I want to thank the players and wish them the very best. I will always be a die-hard Pistons fan and will say a few prayers for Joe and watch as he continues to make the changes needed to allow the Pistons to continue on adding to their great legacy.

NBA salary cap set at $57.7 million
The NBA has set the salary cap for the 2009-2010 season at $57.7 million, a decrease of a little less than $1 million dollars.

The NBA salary cap for the 2009-'10 season dropped to $57.7 million, and the luxury tax threshold to $69.2 million, the league told its teams Tuesday night. The mid-level exception is set at $5.854 million.

This will effect how much the Detroit Pistons will have left after they sign Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva Wednesday, but it won't effect either player's contracts. The Pistons team salary will look similar to this graphic, at around $53.5 million dollars: That would give Joe Dumars around $4.2 million dollars left over to use on a third free agent or to use in a trade taking back more in salary than sending out. With the luxury tax threshold dropping to $69.2 million, there will be teams looking to shed salaries in order to get below that number. This is something that Joe Dumars has stated he would like to take advantage of. Stay tuned...

In the drink
Is Ms. Taurasi here? Diana Taurasi? Ah, there you are ... why the sunglasses? Oh, bad hangover. I see.Class, Ms. Taurasi here is arguably the WNBA's biggest star, which means she could arguably walk the streets of any major U.S. city and not be recognized.

Still, her recent arrest for drunk driving was a big scandal for the league. It's like if Manny Ramirez got a DUI, if nobody watched baseball, the season lasted three months, and steroids got you drunk. Wait, Diana -- I'm reading here you took responsibility for the incident, calling it "embarrassing and unfortunate." Is that true? In that case, you've passed this class -- A-plus. Have a nice summer; I know you have a bus to catch.

See how easy that was, class? Can anyone tell me why Diana passed? Anyone? It's simple: After Ms. Taurasi messed up, she didn't try to get out of it or whine. She ...
1. Shut up;
2. Took her medicine.
I see some of you still are confused. Let's continue. Can I have a volunteer, please?

Pistons hire Cavaliers' John Kuester as coach
It's starting to feel like the summer of 2001 all over again. The Pistons on Tuesday passed on hiring Avery Johnson as their next head coach. Instead, Pistons president Joe Dumars decided on former Pistons and current Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester. Kuester and Dumars agreed late Tuesday night on a two-year contract with a team option for a third worth $1.5 million a year. Kuester was an assistant under Larry Brown during the Pistons' championship season of 2003-04.Dumars last hired an experienced, high-profile assistant coach in 2001 when he gave Rick Carlisle his first head coaching job. "Where we are as a team right now is where we were at the start of Rick Carlisle's era here," Dumars said. "We are in the same sort of transition mode. A $4 million to $5 million coach is not what we need right now."

It would have cost the Pistons a lot more to hire Johnson. He's still owed $8 million over the next two years from the Dallas Mavericks, was looking not only for a contract that would pay him at least $4 million on average, but also was looking for long-term security in the form of a four-year guarantee. Dumars didn't want to sign him to anything longer than three years. "We didn't hire a $4 million-a-year coach until we were ready to win a championship," Dumars said, referring to Larry Brown, who replaced Carlisle in 2004. "But it's not just about that. Our team right now, with the influx of younger players that we have, we just feel like we want to go in a different direction with our coach." Johnson, on ESPN SportsCenter Tuesday, said, "I looked at it, I was interested in it, but I was only interested in it if we could agree on a vision for the team going forward." Dumars said he would consider both Kuester and Tom Thibodeau, Doc Rivers' lead assistant in Boston. But Kuester was clearly Dumars' first choice between those two. He has a history with him, respects that he's a disciple of Larry Brown and that he's considered more of an offensive-minded coach than Thibodeau.

With commitments from free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, plus drafting three offensively skilled forwards -- Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko -- Dumars is building a more offensive-oriented team. With the way the NBA has legislated against clutch-and-grab defense over the last five seasons, and with scoring steadily rising toward triple-digits, even in the postseason, Dumars couldn't rightly justify building a defensive-oriented team like the one he built starting in 2001. Cavaliers coach Mike Brown used Kuester very prominently as his offensive coordinator last season. He allowed Kuester to devise the offensive game plan and to run the huddles in certain situations, even deep in the playoffs. The deal could be finalized as early as today.

Summer league
The Pistons added Michigan State power forward Marquise Gray to their summer league roster. He replaces Matt Freije .

The Pistons might also not have the services of Jerebko right away. He's one of seven players on the summer roster that played overseas last season, thus needed to get clearance from FIBA.

Jerebko is the only player still waiting for clearance, and Pistons director of player personnel George David said he was hopeful Jerebko would only miss a game or two.

2010 cap may limit signings
The NBA's ballyhooed free-agent summer of 2010 might have quietly taken another hit late Tuesday night. In a memo announcing next season's salary cap and luxury-tax threshold, sent out shortly before the league's annual July moratorium on signings and trades was lifted at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, NBA teams also received tentative projections from the league warning that the cap is estimated to drop to somewhere between $50.4 million and $53.6 million for the 2010-11 season.

The official league memorandum, obtained by ESPN.com, forecasts a dip in basketball-related income in the 2009-10 season of 2.5 percent to 5 percent, which threatens to take the 2010-11 cap down some $5 million to $8 million from last season's $58.7 million salary cap.

A significant drop for the luxury-tax threshold is also projected going into the summer of 2010. If basketball-related income drops by 2.5 percent in 2009-10, league officials are projecting a 2010-11 salary cap of $53.6 million and a luxury-tax line of $65 million. If BRI, as it is referred to in the NBA, decreases by five percent, teams would be looking at a $50.4 million salary cap and a luxury-tax line of $61.2 million in 2010-11. "Teams should be aware of this projected BRI decrease," reads the memo, "and plan accordingly."The new figures for 2009-10 just announced by the league have set the salary cap at $57.7 million per team -- down $1 million from $58.7 from 2008-09 -- and the luxury-tax threshold at $69.9 million.

Chris Andersen to re-sign with Denver Nuggets
The Denver Post (Benjamin Hochman) reports: Get ready to flap your wings again. “The Birdman” is back. Chris Andersen and the Nuggets have agreed on a five-year contract that could earn Andersen up to $26 million, the player’s manager, Mark Bryant, said Tuesday night. This locks in one of Denver’s most popular athletes for the next half-decade. “We’re ecstatic to stay in the community,” Bryant said. Andersen will make $3.7 million next season in his backloaded and incentive-based contract, which will help the Nuggets financially. They entered this free-agency period over the NBA luxury tax line of $69.92 million, which was announced Tuesday.

Andrea Bargnani to get contract extension from Raptors
ESPN.com reports: Hedo Turkoglu is on the way and it appears that Andrea Bargnani will also soon have his long-term future secured with the Toronto Raptors. Bargnani’s agent, Leon Rose, told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that the Raptors — who later this week will officially sign Turkoglu away from Orlando — have reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension for the 7-foot Italian, who was selected No. 1 overall by the Raptors in the 2006 draft. The deal, according to NBA front-office sources, would span five seasons starting in 2010-11 and earn Bargnani an estimated $50 million.

Avery Johnson - Out
From NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports: “The Detroit Pistons are no longer considering Avery Johnson for their head-coaching position after the two sides could not come to terms on a contract, an NBA source with knowledge of the talks said Tuesday morning. The source said Cleveland Cavaliers assistant John Kuester is now the favorite to get the job, but Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau remains under serious consideration.”

The Issue: Avery wanted a little a longer contract from a team that goes trough coach like Sheed get techs.Little upset about it, my Avery Johnson impression is stellar. Personally if they are going to go with someone with no NBA head coaching experience I would rather see Laimbeer helm.

From the Joe Dumars via DetNews: “Where we are right now as a team is kind of like where we were at the start of the Rick Carlisle era,” Dumars said. “And a $4 to $5 million (a year) coach is not what we need right now. We didn’t have one of those until we were close to contending for a championship when we got Larry (Brown).”

Pistons pass on Avery, focus on Kuester (UPDATE)
The Detroit Pistons have passed on Avery Johnson in their search for a head coach and have entered into negotiations with Cavaliers assistant John Kuester, a person with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com. A person familiar with the negotiations said an agreement is expected within 24 hours.

Unable to satisfy Johnson's salary requirements and apparently unwilling to guarantee a third year, the Pistons have focused on Kuester, a former Pistons assistant under Larry Brown who is credited with diversifying the Cavs' offense last season after coach Mike Brown gave him autonomy on that side of the floor. Kuester has not employed an agent in his dealings with the Cavs, but he is being represented in his negotiations with Detroit -- by CAA Sports, the same agency that represents LeBron James.
