Re: OT: Report: Cavaliers make offer to Tom Izzo
Let's remember, Izzo doesn't have to have the guarantee of James staying. He could just take the deal now (while Cleveland still tries to keep James) and gets his 30 million guaranteed with or without him.
In fact, it would be worse for Izzo to wait and see if James stays, he can basically treat Cleveland like James stayed for negotiating a contract.
I truly don't believe Tom Izzo (or any coach not named Phil Jackson, Greg Popovich or Pat Riley) is worthy enough to sway LeBron to stay with a worse team than he has now.

Re: OT: Report: Cavaliers make offer to Tom Izzo
Honestly - Cleveland is probably a perfect situation for Izzo whether Lebron stays or not.
If Lebron stays Izzo has a contending team and 30 million dollars.
If Lebron goes Izzo has a team with no expectations - and 30 million dollars.

Basically... he's risking a lot of money in the event that LBJ doesn't stay if he decides to wait and see.

I think we are underrating educated decisions (from Gilbert, Izzo, etc).

I am extremely disappointed in you![]()
Del Choc guy predicts Brackins to put up 13 and 6 this year and there was no challenge from you
Wait, what? Brackins who's not even mocked to go in the 1st round? Man, I am slipping.

We're all just guessing, but if I had to bet, I'd bet on this meaning he has a strong assurance LeBron is staying.
Why? Because he's still relatively young (55) and knows that for the foreseeable future he can bolt for the NBA whenever he wants. Maybe not $30+ guaranteed, but certainly something close to that.
Is he going to trade that + what by all accounts is a job he loves at MSU to take over what isn't far off from what Tim Floyd was hired to do with the Bulls, losing 60+ games every year and basically engaging in a glorified form of tanking?
I just don't see it. Maybe it is a staggering miscalculation on the part of Gilbert and Izzo, but I think the opposite is far more likely.
On indefinite hiatus as of May 27, 2014.

All we've heard is that LBJ has been close to unreachable to the Cavs and wanted no part of the coaching decision.

I highly doubt he can get close to that money at any old time.

Also I doubt Lebron would announce a decision today when he can three or more weeks of look at me.
Should Izzo be an attraction to Lebron? To be honest, I wouldn't think so. Lebron shouldn't have to have someone learning the NBA on the job training at this point.
*Should* be a negative, but then again, does Lebron put staying over winning? He might.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that given all the coaching vacancies that will happen over the next 2-3 years, he would be able to shake loose a 4 yr / 20 mill or 5 yr/25 mill offer from someone.
His name is bandied about constantly when there's a vacancy, he's an expert networker that people seem to love, and a five-mill a year deal is on the high side for a first-time coach but not outlandish in respect to the very top salaries in the league.
I simply don't think this deal represents a once-in-a-lifetime sort of opportunity for him.

Overrated bum to knowledgeable fans. We all know that most of the successful coaches in the college rank are overrated. Coach K from Duke would fail miserably in the NBA. That is why he is scared to make the transition to the NBA.
Again, you guys have not answered my question. Give me one name in the past 20 years who has made a successful transition from the NCAA to NBA.
I can't wait until Duck reads this.
Yeah, and he would bring up his man crush for Luol Deng, and how he would not trade Luol Deng for Carmelo Anthony. We have heard that before. But, let's hear his response and yours.
Eh. I disavowed that opinion, in detail, almost 3 years ago. At the time I held the opinion, it was defensible. Today it isn't.
I have additional thoughts about your post, and your opinions in general, but unfortunately I volunteered to moderate the board until the end of July.
P.S. If Izzo takes that job, I'll immediately join the LeBron-to-Cleveland camp. I frankly don't think the money is enough to make Izzo join a team that will immediately become one of the worst in the NBA without LeBron.
This isn't Pitino going to a major franchise like the Celtics. Its the Cavs.

Re: OT: Report: Cavaliers make offer to Tom Izzo
I think most of you are forgetting that LeBron wants to win and that the pieces on a team matter a lot more than what coach LeBron has.
Assuming the Cavs due spend an exorbitant amount to hire Izzo as their next coach, how much does that actually improve the Cavs? It's hard to make a case that they would be significantly better and it's much easier to make the case that they'd be around the same level, if not worse. The Izzo thing is just really overblown. I can understand Gilbert wanting to make a splash and hoping that entices LeBron, but I can't see that really affecting LeBron's decision if he truly is about winning.

By definition, it's not an offer he would get at any time. It's the kind of offer meant to be so exorbitant that it would actually get him to change his mind, unlike whatever other offers he has gotten in the past.
Teams don't just easily hand out huge contracts to college coaches with no NBA experience routinely.

If Izzo does in fact accept the offer, my heart is moving on from Lebron. I can see a scenario wherein Izzo accepts the job without an assurance that Lebron is staying, but not one where the Cavs offer it. I dunno. Obviously nothing's for certain, but I think this would be a really bad sign for us.

Yeah especially with reports from the Detroit News that Izzo turned the Bulls down last week. You take that and add him accepting Cleveland and I agree, time to move on from LBJ.

Or it could be, you know, that we didn't offer him $30M (or probably even half that).
