I think it makes sense to say do a deal that includes Boston's own 2018 1st and then maybe a 2nd or two. Melo gives you a puncher's chance at the Finals. Probably not, but it does make Boston better. You could ride out the IT, Horford and Melo core until the players you pick with the last two Brooklyn picks are ready to take over.

Something like:

Marcus Smart, Tyler Zeller, Amir Johnson, Boston's 2018 1st rounder and 2017 Minnesota's 2nd for Melo and Kyle O'Quinn.

Something like that is a fair deal. I'd be happy with that if I were a Boston fan.

Doc's never trading his son, so Melo to the Celtics it is. Hopefully for the Knicks' sake, he'll be cooperative and willing to go to Boston.

Usually when an All Star is available for a trade or a FA - fans on all the teams making a run for such player will fight or believe that the player will go to their team...

But on Melo's case - you have Celtics fans hoping that he will be traded to Clippers and vice versa for Clippers fans...

For the Celtics it really is tricky to make the salaries work. Especially with his 15% trade kicker. Curious to know if Phil is selling low or actually trying to get star level assets in return.

Melo and O'Quinn for Johnson, Zeller and Jerebko works in the trade machine - who says no? Knicks get two expiring's and Zeller is young and has a short 2 year contract.

Those three for those two work if Melo waives his trade kicker. Requires one more small salary if he doesn't.
Also, Zeller is fully non-guaranteed next year, so the package is fully expiring.

Even if Jackson is hellbent on moving Melo, I assume we'd still have to add some amount of pick currency.

Say he waives it, add in Minny 2nd round pick, LAC 1st, and Memphis 1st (assuming we can't get a Nets pick, even if we include Justin Holiday).

So we trade 2 potential top 10 picks(that MEM pick could turn out really well in 2020- yea 2020 but still) for a guy who just chucks shots and hasn't done **** in 3 years. Nah, I don't think Ainge will bite. He didn't bite on sending 2 BKN picks for Butler, who's 2 times the player Melo is.

To be fair, some Clippers fans are excited about the idea. I just personally don't see the benefit and I think it's just the name that's getting people excited. I don't see how Melo solves any of our problems, especially against a team like the Warriors. I also don't like the idea of adding that bloated contract to the massive deals that Chris and Blake are getting this offseason with a roster that still is unlikely to ever reach the Finals. Nor am I thrilled about giving up any more future draft picks for aging veterans.

I'd hope thats not the deal breaker. For salary purposes, one of Reddick/Rivers has to be in it. Redick gives them a better chance to win this year, but Austin is signed for longer for whats gonna be a cheaper contract by at least 6 or 7 mill per year

Yep, no chance of that happening. They can settle for 1-2 middling 1st rounders otherwise they can keep Melo.

Again, rough estimate. But the Knicks getting out of Melo's contract is in reality equivalent to a high draft pick in itself. People need to be realistic about the value of Melo. Blake brings back a BRK pick however Melo would not. Value just doesn't add up.

It's still significantly worse than the trade SMTBSI posted. I understand Melo wouldn't bring back the Nets pick, but it's still a bad trade.

The bold is simply not true and severely undervaluing Melo (and this is coming from someone who is low on him). The last 10 games, he's putting up 24 points on 50%, 37% 3PT%, and 83 FT%. The last 5, he's been even better. People will bring up the record, but the truth of the matter is he is the only reason we are even in these games. After getting off to a **** start, he's picked it up big time recently and has raised his value a solid amount.

The issue is that while he has played well, scored efficiently and shown that he can still be an impactful offensive player, he has done so as the primary ball handler. And no matter where he goes, he won't be allowed to do that. He would do better to show off his off ball skills and play good defense than attempt to carry the Knicks if he wants to get traded (which of course he does not).

He's actually one of the most efficient catch and shoot players in the league.
