Re: Cap space
If I had the choice, I'd honestly rather just trade Rose of a late first rounder or maybe even 2 2nds. Boston could absorb him into their trade exception.
Dropping Rose instead would allow us to take a flyer on Zhaire, and also almost certainly ensures us a top 5 draft pick in 2021.

Smith will get picked up by somebody on minimum deal, probably Golden State or San Antonio.
But hey, Detroit needs McGruder. Probably just Weaver pretending McGruder had value in the trade he gave up four second rounders in.
That’s a shame.

Re: Cap space
Not happy we've let Smith go. That's a foolish move given his age and potential.
Much rather add McGruder to the Dedmon stretch (Stretchy
) and take a flyer on another kid.
Could have just waived Bradley instead of acquiring the kid in the first place. At least then you can claim #38 was the reason for that trade.

I cant make sense of alot of things we've been doing. Feels like we just make moves and go in a circle.

Re: Cap space
I believe Bradley couldn't be stretched as far as Smith, likely one of the reasons for the trade.
McGruder better fits Weaver's type of player, a hustling defender coming off his worst NBA season with something to prove and a good attitude. A bench player who's probably a more valuable trade asset than Smith while the stretch gets a little smaller.
The silver lining I'm hoping for is this leading to Louis King getting a two way contract.

It’s like we signed an invisible player who can’t play to a 5 year, 20 million dollar extension. I’ll name this invisible player Stretchy, though I’m open to other names.
Which signing is worst?
Plumlee 3/25
Grant 3/60
Stretchy 5/20
And yes, that is close to what the stretch figure is if it’s McGruder.
Feels bad man. I was hoping my perspective on these moves would improve with time. It has not. We didn’t just sign vets to dubious contracts- we stretched guys so their salary hits longer (even trading for guys with 2 years left so we could stretch them farther) in order to do it.
I already knew all that, but it feels worse the more I think about it. As a guy who’s really into the numbers side of the game it just makes me puke.
Im personally not a fan of getting the pair from Denver, but I get it. I can even kind of understand waive/stretch Dedmon over 5 vs snell over 3 or whatever it is.
The one I don’t see the point in is, Bradley/38 to Detroit and then Bradley for Smith.
I get that I know nothing about Lee, but it doesn’t seem like the move is worth it overall. If someone spectacular slipped to 38, but I just feel it’s pointless

Both are on one year guaranteed deals. If Pistons picked up Smith's contract next year to be able to stretch him over five season's they'd have added $5M to the stretch number as well. Bradley makes 3.5M, Zhaire 3.2M, so Pistons save $100K more a season per stretch cap hit.

Beat writers need access. They'll defend and explain away positively literally every move the team makes.

Maybe. Maybe not. Just figured I’d post his take as he addressed the topic.

Maybe we get lucky and someone actually uses their cap space or MLE to claim Smith off waivers and then we won't be on the hook for his salary.

I don't see the need for McGruder - dude is what he is at this point. Keeping him over Smith (after signing Ellington) makes zero sense to me.
We have Plumlee, Blake, Grant, Ellington and Rose as "vets"...no need for another one.

Assuming Smith was stretched:
Blake Griffin $36,810,996
Jerami Grant $19,050,000
Delon Wright $9,000,000
Derrick Rose $7,682,926
Killian Hayes $5,307,120 (120% draft slot)
Rodney McGruder $5,192,307
Sekou Doumbouya $3,449,400
Isaiah Stewart $3,121,080 (120% draft slot)
Dewayne Dedmon $2,866,667 (dead money)
Saddiq Bey $2,689,920 (120% draft slot)
Dzanan Musa $2,002,800
Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk $1,663,861
Zhaire Smith $640,920 (dead money)
Total: $99,477,997
Cap Space: $9,662,003
Luxury Tax Room: $33,149,003
Pending Deals
Mason Plumlee ?
Josh Jackson ?
Wayne Ellington $2,564,753 (minimum)
Jahlil Okafor $1,882,867 (minimum)

Saben Lee
Deividas Sirvydis
Jaylen Hands
Nikola Radicevic

The rookies have also been signed. No word on the numbers yet though. I would be stunned if they got any less than the full 120% of their draft slots. Lee should be on a two-way contract that doesn't have any impact on the cap.

Re: Cap space
So Plumlee will be official next, eating up most of that $9.6 mil.
Then Jackson with all or part of the room exception, then the vet minimum guys.
And that'll be the end of the off-season signings.

Re: Cap space
Could be a couple of non-guaranteed "camp deals" signed before Ellington, Okafor and Jackson eat up any of the remaining space left after Plumlee signs. Though not sure if it matters as teams over the cap are signing such deals so maybe the trick is their vet minimum deals with a little guaranteed money so when they're cut they get that bonus and then sign with GRD. Vet minimum deals of course can be signed even when over the cap.
Given about 1.6M in cap space will be "wasted", maybe Plumlee can get a declining contract and his biggest year could be year one.

Re: Cap space
I think it’s clear Weaver is trying to win games now. He’s just TERRIBLE at actually improving this team.
He took young guys like Kennard, Wood, Bradley, Bruce Brown, Smith, Dedmon, Patton, and 5 future picks and turned them into:
Grant, Plumlee, Okafor, McGruder, Ellington, and Jackson.
This might actually be our worst off-season that I can remember. Just a failure on so many levels.
We got worse in these areas:
Talent-wise
Cap-wise
Youth-wise
Future draft pick-wise

Again with this "5 future picks" thing....4 OF THOSE ARE 2ND ROUNDERS AND THE OTHER IS AN INSANELY PROTECTED 1ST THAT WILL BECOME A 2ND.
Focus on the rookies and the draft picks to come. This is all about Emoni
