If they go after Kidd, does that mean Giannis becomes the next target?

That's what I'm hearing considering Giannis' relationship with Kidd. The firing would then make total sense.

That's the idea.

I don't see how it succeeds given the current CBA landscape and the Knicks current draft capital unless we do something stupid.

If we get Kidd and Giannis--and yet still retain at least three of Brunson, KAT, OG, Robinson, Mikal and Hart--then I will ask my kids to (re)name all my grandkids either "Leon" or "Rose."

Bro, there is zero chance of that happening. Someone from that core 5 is going for Giannis, you'd be lucky to retain 4 of the 5. My guess is KAT.

You're not understanding the English of what I wrote. I said I hoped to keep at least three of those six--e.g., I was even more pessimistic than you.

You're saying in response that we'd keep four to five of those six listed players. I hope you're right (but I doubt it).

My opinion is that we'd have to keep Brunson--and at least two of OG, KAT, Mikal, Hart, and Robinson--in order to make this a go. Otherwise, we'd just end up being the current Bucks (shudder...).

My personal preference is giving up KAT and Mikal (and keeping Brunson, OG, Hart, and Robinson). And if we can't get Giannis for a package centered on KAT and Mikal, I'd prefer that we'd then walk away from negotiating for Giannis...and Kidd.

i cant say the knicks have turned the corner regarding any kind of slo-build process. since they were close this year i think they will take a hard look at a major upgrade and go for the biggest star on the market,,,like they always have - because they're new york

so get the player and then get the coach

say for instance if they have a chance at giannis or somesuch, they are going to drop everything, go grab giannis, AND THEN present the prospective coaches with the roster and say "what do you think you can do with this?"

i am pretty sure the knick org is working behind the scenes as we speak and getting giannis or maybe kd is their prize,,,not hurley or wright or whomever

getting a coach first is only if the coach is the lure for a target player - like if giannis is saying "get me malone and i'm a knick"

Please forget all the Giannis talk, it's just sensationalism and click baits. The Knicks as constituted just went to the ECF and it was their first year together, Where as Indiana and OKC have had the same core for a number of years. OKC took some bumps in last year's playoffs and now look. So we can grow from this and move up.

This management led by Leon Rose has built a nice product already without Giannis and invested lots of capital to do it. No successful organization does the big old go for the fences move after doing so. You have to admit the Knicks are trending up.

That's why the Knicks' perceptoion is so wack because like the Yankees at some point in the past wanted to go for the biggest star. As it stands the Knicks are building those stars organically, methodically, with this executive team lead by Leon Rose and Wes Wesley and the results have been positive.

So I guess what I'm saying is, lets move on from Giannis to the Knicks obvious rumers and let someone else empty their bank account if Giannis is asking out. The Knicks can beat the teams in the East, and are a bright coach from going to the FInals without him already.

i'm stressing a point, ie i don't think nyk will slo build. if they go for a stud that will be their priority FIRST

They have been slo building, where've you've been?

Is this Giannis/Kidd/Knicks stuff just coming from Woelfel? Because the guy is a total clown who is basically a joke among Bucks fans at this point.

The Kidd stuff is from multiple outlets and seems legit. Giannis is pure speculation from multiple tea leaf readers but even Shams has kind of hinted it. The Knicks will certainly try. We don't have a good offer that leaves us anywhere worth speaking about though.

Right. Their best hope is to get him to go Anthony Davis and insist on the Knicks, so hiring a coach he likes is a good step towards that.

So several years ago the Knicks fans loved to soft troll Mavs fans with NY south stuff. But if they hire Kidd after Casey Smith and after Jalen Brunson saved the franchise, can we have our turn?

Stein has the Kidd stuff and nobody is more dialed in on Dallas than him, and he never runs with stuff he doesn't have. So there is definitely some substance to the Kidd portion.

I mean I'm sure they'd love Giannis. We'd all love Giannis. But its hard to see an offer that the Bucks could really take? Doesn't mean the desire isn't there of course, but feels less plausible.

For Brunson, KAT, OG and picks? Because that’s what it would take.

That wouldn't be my preference. Giannis and Robinson together in the frontcourt would be just awful offensively. Zero spacing. Neither can shoot. If you get Giannis, you want to keep KAT, because Giannis needs a stretch 5 next to him like BroLo has been.

Brunson is the only Knick that’s untouchable. We can’t trade him after he gave us a hometown discount. That would be messed up.

Yeah, but without Brunson we'd have no playmaker, and losing OG would gut our defensive versatility (even with Giannis). Instead, I'm thinking Brunson, OG, Shamet, Payne and McBride would help with spacing--and hopefully Hart as well (assuming he practices his 3 over the summer). Robinson would come off the bench--or spot start where needed. OG has demonstrated that he can guard a wide variety of players--particularly when backed by a shot-blocker (Giannis and/or Robinson).

That said...while I love the idea, due to the salaries involved, I see no viable path forward that gets us Giannis and leaves us with a squad that can still compete. (And if we can't get Giannis, I want no part of Kidd.)

100% fine. Don't want Giannis then (and don't want Kidd regardless).

I don't see how the Knicks get Giannis, but obviously the idea would be to get him to go with Brunson.

The Mavericks destroying my fandom for them makes me more detached from this situation now. And it actually makes Kidd's choice a lot more interesting from my current perspective.

I think the Brunsons are part of why they want Kidd, Jalen may miss his old coach. If they really are considering some sort of Towns for Giannis package of sort and actually get him it was known Giannis was very defensive of Kidd as a a coach and even offered to go to the Bucks front office to prevent his imminent firing and Kidd talked him down from it which seems to make the Giannis trade rumors look to have some traction. These pieces add up

Would Kidd want to leave Dallas though? We know he's Machiavellian enough to stab a team in the back, ask a Nets fan, but does he have a reason to do so? The Mavs are about to draft Cooper Flagg and he seems to have pretty good job security right now with the team that drafted him and eventually won a championship with as a player. He's already bolted from a New York market before so he knows what it entails putting the New York media on you, not a fun place to be a head coach

However, the New York job might look better in the long run. Even with Flagg Dallas is set to be up a fecally infested creek without a paddle in three years or so, AD and Kyrie aren't getting any younger or less injury prone and Dallas is in terrible shape when it comes to draft picks over the next 6 seasons. If they don't blow it up now he could find himself in a situation where he becomes the scapegoat for a team that has expectations because of Flagg but not enough built around him.

This is a very interesting decision for Jason Kidd

knicksstuff wrote:Any Dallas fans give a breakdown of Kidd offensive and defensive coaching style. Does he excel at one more than the other

Former Mavs fan as of recently so I can answer this. Lousy on offense, not a good play caller and completely leaned on Luka and Kyrie to keep the offense afloat, there was no excuse for Dallas to never have a top 5 offense under his tenure (they were number 1 in Luka's 2nd season with Carlisle). Ironic but true for one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. Pretty good on defense, that came from working under Frank Vogel and his defensive style is reminiscent of Vogel, but you need a defensive anchor at center with that, that's why Lively's injury hurt them so much this last season. Generally smart with challenges although sometimes he doesn't make an obvious one in regular season games he seems checked out of. Knows when to call timeouts. Substitutions are sometime questionable but he is not unique in that regard. B or C tier coach, maybe a B minus
