Ben is already a 70% finisher. Didn't take long to regain his touch.

You are absolutely right. The Point was though that Embiid would be the best Sixers in theory.. or if healthy and would block Ben from winning an MVP Award. And for that Point Regular Season Games Matter. Guys like Shaq lost out on at least 2 MVPs because they only played 55-60 Games in those Seasons. To be named MVP there is an unwritten Rule of like a minimum of 70-75 Games you have to play

Some people's expectations
It drove me to the point of insanity watching LSU coach Johnny Jones playing Simmons as a 4 because he was pandering to seniors in the team and trying to keep his job. Even though he shone out as the College #1 pick in that draft, I constantly told people they had no idea how good Simmons was really going to be because he was played completely out of position by LSU. The only person stopping Ben at LSU was the coach not Ben.
Let's be honest even 8 weeks ago there were threads on here with people demanding he is a point forward and not a point guard, that he is average defensively, that he is passive, that he would never be able to defend an opposition point guard, that you could just lay off him and force him to shoot and that he couldn't score etc etc. All stuff turned out was completely wrong. It's not that Simmons has gotten better necessarily.. it's just people put too much stock in 1 mismanaged college season. If you'd watched him since he was a kid (Watch some of his stuff in high school... he shot 3's pretty well too and hasn't shown that yet) he is doing what he did then.

The Ben Simmons Megathread
What player does Simmons defend during games? PG? SF? PF? Is he capable of defending point guards full time? Whats gonna happen when Fultz comes back? What’s Simmons ideal defensive assingment?
Sorry to ask this stupid question, but Im not able to watch all Sixers games because I live outside the US

He can defend any position. He is a much better perimeter defender than interior one though. Pretty much 1-4 optimally. You'd prefer him defending 2-4 though, as while he can defend the one incredibly well for a 6'10 guy, it's not best for him to guard the opposing primary ball handler for long stretches in terms of avoiding fatigue.

Thanks for the input. One more question: during games is he defending the opposing PG full time or is he getting the PF? Or is he constantly switching? Does coach Brown change the assignment depending on the matchups?

Depends as well on who else is on the court with him. He defended Steph Curry very well early on... then when McConnell came on Ben switched to the 4 offensively and McConnell guarded Curry. That is as much though to do with McConnell being a good defender of smalls but also if you put McConnell on anyone else defensively they will just beat him down and post McConnell up because of his lack of height.
It will be interesting to see what happens when Fultz comes back. His is taller but not as good a defender as McConnell yet. You may see Simmons defend the 1 more if he is on the court with Fultz. Then again Fultz has the length and potential to be a good defender too.

I would much prefer Simmons not have to chase around PGs all game/I think he's better at covering wings and 4s anyway.

I would prefer he defends the 4 for no other reason than he is an elite rebounder and it puts him in a better position to get rebounds.

I think the Sixers win 50 next year too, but it will be very hard for Simmons to win MVP when he has a more valuable player on his own team.

Disagree. I think if Ben reaches his full potential he will be better and more valuable than Embiid regardless of if he is healthy or not. I see Ben reaching the heights of Lebron and possibly even better when he hits his prime.

The thing people seem to disregard with Simmons is the fact that he's a full time point guard, and the fact that point guard is generally regarded as the most difficult position to play. If he gets to play PG for the next few years and really develop his PG skills (he plays with great pace already, but there's so much more for him to learn in terms of PG play as he's never played the position really before unlike most typical sized PG that come into the league), he could be one of those players that really makes his teammates better like we haven't seen maybe even since Magic. I feel like PG's in the NBA today don't really make their teammates better like they used to because they are mostly all scoring guards who can pass.
That's completely aside from the obvious in that learning to shoot would help take his game to another level. But that's all people really talk about in terms of his upside going forward, not how much better he can get at the hardest position to play in the game.
I just hope they don't bring someone in via trade or FA, take away the primary ball handling from him and make him a point forward, disrupting that progress. Kinda reminds me of Larry Brown's comments, which are funny looking back now. https://www.fanragsports.com/larry-brown-rips-brett-browns-plan-ben-simmons/

As long as Embiid stays healthy I would be thrilled to be wrong and say that Simmons turns into the better player because that would mean that Simmons would be an alltime great.
I’m not doubting that this could happen. I just think that Embiid has the better chance.

He is a dunking machine these days. Remember when Amare first came into the league and he just seemed to always be dunking?
Simmons reminds me of that. Of course, Amare was being fed beautifully all game long by Nash, and Simmons actually IS the point guard, which makes it all the more remarkable.

after the first two games or so, people in here were calling simmons a below the rim type of player.
