I did not realize how impressive Yoho’s 2024 was. Absolutely dominate numbers and went from High A to AAA in 1 season. Hopefully can carry that over.

Brewers lead a new BA article on teams that saw the best returns from their international signings.

Milwaukee Brewers
The signing of Jesus Made alone would make it a strong class for the Brewers. Made, the top prospect in the Dominican Summer League, signed for $950,000, and once on board, the switch-hitting Dominican shortstop showed an exciting blend of hitting ability, strike-zone judgment, bat speed, power and athleticism with physical projection arrows pointing up. Made hit .331/.458/.554 in 216 plate appearances with six home runs, 39 walks and 28 strikeouts with 28 stolen bases in 32 attempts and is now a Top 100 prospect.

Milwaukee’s 2024 international group also shows promise beyond Made. Dominican shortstop Luis Peña, signed for $800,000 and had an even higher OPS than Made, as he hit .393/.457/.583 in 184 plate appearances with one home run, 15 walks and 15 strikeouts. Peña will need to develop a more selective approach, but he had just an 8.1% strikeout rate and showed his plus-plus speed by swiping 39 bases in 43 attempts for a 91% success rate.

Milwaukee’s biggest bonus this year went to Venezuelan shortstop Jorge Quintana, who signed for $1.7 million. Though he hit just .250/.361/.380 in 238 plate appearances, Quintana showed a patient approach and simple swing from both sides of the plate. The most encouraging part of his season were the strides he made defensively. While Quintana once looked like a high-probability bet to shift over to third base, he defended his position well this summer, showing smooth actions, good body control and surprising range for a player who doesn’t have elite first-step quickness.

A pair of lower bonus signings also boosted their stock this year, most notably outfielder Jose Anderson, who signed for $60,000 out of the Dominican Republic. Anderson showed big righthanded power en route to hitting .283/.403/.512 in 201 plate appearances with eight home runs. His power comes with some swing-and-miss, but he has kept it to a manageable level. And while he played center field in the DSL, he’s probably headed for a corner soon.

They also signed an intriguing sleeper, Venezuelan shortstop Juan Ortuno, for $27,500. He’s a smaller, scrappy player (5-foot-8, 165 pounds) with advanced instincts for a 17-year-old. A righthanded hitter, Ortuno batted .344/.464/.481 with more walks (29) than strikeouts (27) in 192 plate appearances. His bat-to-ball skills and swing decisions stand out, though he doesn’t have much power. He played nearly everywhere this year—shortstop, second, third, first and left field—mostly because the Brewers had a crowded infield group in the DSL, but he projects to stick in the dirt.

I love this. I really think he and Black are interesting candidates to take over the Bauers spot.

Kind of incredible considering it's across all minors. Quero won it last year.

Baseball America revealed their top ten:

1. Jesus Made - SS
2. Jeferson Quero - C
3. Jacob Misiorowski - RHP
4. Cooper Pratt - SS
5. Tyler Black - 1B / 3B
6. Eric Bitonti - 3B / 1B
7. Mike Boeve - 3B / 1B
8. Bishop Letson - RHP
9. Luis Pena - SS
10. Brett Wichrowski - RHP

Surprised Gasser isn't on there. They're higher on Bitonti and Letson than most. I can't wait to see Pena and Made this season.

Baseball America has writeups on guys who may get selected in the Rule 5 draft, and one of the Smith's made the list.

Smith pitched sparingly at Wake Forest due to Tommy John surgery before signing with the Brewers as a nondrafted free agent in 2021. At 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, the 24-year-old Smith threw a career-high 94.1 innings in 2024, posting a 3.05 ERA with 113 strikeouts and 29 walks mostly for Double-A Biloxi with five relief outings for Triple-A Nashville. Smith split time between starting and the bullpen, pitching off a fastball that sits 92-96 mph and can reach 98. He mixes in an average curveball and slider, a repertoire that likely plays better in short relief outings rather than getting through a lineup multiple times.

I don't really understand why he wasn't protected.

BA updated their International Prospect rankings. Brewers are expected to sign:

30. Kenny Fenelon, OF, Dominican Republic (#36 on Pipeline)
Born: Sept. 30, 2007. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 180.
Team: Brewers

Fenelon is an electric athlete and a potential power/speed threat in the middle of the field. He has a strong but lean 6-foot frame with quick hands and explosive bat speed to drive the ball with impact. Fenelon has the power to leave the yard now and the strength projection to develop into a 20-25 home run threat. The biggest question mark on Fenelon is how his hitting ability will translate against more advanced pitching. Fenelon can crush fastballs with the ability to drive balls in the air, but he will have to tighten his swing and make adjustments to improve against breaking balls, though he does a solid job for his age of navigating the strike zone. Fenelon is a plus runner whose speed should make him both a high stolen base threat and allow him to stay in center field, where he has a fringe-average arm.

38. Cristopher Acosta, SS, Dominican Republic (#45 on Pipeline)
Born: Jan. 28, 2008. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt. 165.
Team: Brewers

While a lot of Latin American players who sign as shortstops eventually move off the position, Acosta has a high probability of sticking. As a fringe-average runner, Acosta isn’t a speedy shortstop, but his defensive instincts and actions are advanced for his age. Acosta’s hands and feet work well, and he has a solid-average arm, giving him the attributes to become an above-average fielder. Offensively, Acosta’s swing has some length to it, but he has the hand-eye coordination to put balls in play even when he’s off balance. Getting stronger will be key for Acosta, who is a line-drive hitter with occasional doubles pop.

40. Brailyn Antunez, OF, Venezuela (#42 on Pipeline)
Born: Nov. 30, 2007. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 194.
Team: Brewers
Trending Up ↑

On talent, Antunez has a case as the top prospect from Venezuela for 2025 and one of the top overall prospects in the class. He has a strong, athletic build with a blend of tools and skills at a premium position. Antunez has fast bat speed and the strength to already drive the ball with impact to all fields, showing the potential to grow into 25-plus home run power. He has good feel for hitting, picking up spin with good plate discipline and bat-to-ball skills to perform well in games. Antunez doesn’t have a typical lean, wiry body type for a center fielder, but he has the tools and instincts that will give him a strong chance to stay there. He’s a plus-plus runner with powerful strides, good instincts that enhance his range and an arm that earns plus-or-better grades.

Antunez seems particularly exciting.

Baseball Prospectus with their top 20 today.

1 - Jesus Made, IF
2 - Jeferson Quero, C
3 - Cooper Pratt, SS
4 - Jacob Misiorowski, RHP
5 - Mike Boeve, 1B/3B
6 - Yophery Rodriguez, OF
7 - Braylon Payne, OF
8 - Josh Knoth, RHP
9 - Blake Burke, 1B
10 - Luis Peña, IF
11 - Eric Bitonti, 3B/1B
12 - Tyler Black, IF
13 - Bryce Meccage, RHP
14 - Logan Henderson, RHP
15 - Caleb Durbin, IF/OF
16 - Robert Gasser, LHP
17 - Luke Adams, 1B/3B
18 - Brock Wilken, 3B
19 - Craig Yoho, RHP
20 - Carlos Rodriguez, RHP

They seem to think Made's most likely position is at 2B, Pratt's at 3B, Boeve at 1B, Durbin at 2B, and Adams at 1B.

It would be a bit of a bummer if Pratt can't hold down SS.

Did Pratt just win gold glove as a SS?

Yup. BP's thought was his size and relative lack of foot speed would necessitate a move to 3B.

Question. Why is Gasser ranked so low? I get he's hurt but TJs have a pretty good recovery rate now days and dude looked great before his elbow snapped.

Also a guy like Black, isn't he basically the same prospect he was a year ago? I never really understood why he was as highly regarded but i wouldn't think his limited ABs in the majors should change the outlook on him too much.

Yea, I honestly have no idea what their thinking is on Gasser. He's my #4, only behind Made, Quero, and Pratt. Everything we saw out of Gasser last year makes me think he's easily our best pitching prospect.
