OT: soccer thread

This is why I don't like soccer, announces 4 minutes of added time, then it magically changes to 5 minutes and they score at 4:45 of added time. Soccer will forever be a joke.

I bet they added an extra minute because Zusi ( i think) was taking forever to get out

all bradley had to do was kick it into the stands, game over. he turned it over and boom, game is tied. very frustrating.

it seems that the only realistic scenario where we dont advance is if we lose to germany and ghana beats portugal and the goal difference is greater than 2 goals (combined between the two games - ie germany 2 - usa 0; ghana 2 - portugal 1)

so root for portugal in the next game.

This tie really bothers me. Can someone tell me why extra time is allowed in soccer alot of the time? What is the point?

They use a running clock so any stops in the game like injury or goals are kept only by the ref. This means that the time really is only 45 minutes a half but since it is kept by the ref there is no way for a timer to work it.

I hate this rule. I always thought the first tie breaker should be head to head. We beat Ghana and have the same 4 points we should advance because we got three from them. If it was a tie go to goal differential but otherwise head to head should always rule.

If the United States and Germany draw on Thursday, both will advance to the knockout stage regardless of Ghana and Portugal's result. There have already been questions about how much attacking will occur in that match, as there's precedent for German involvement in a mutually-assured advancement situation.

In 1982, West Germany was in a group with Algeria, Austria and Chile. A 3-2 Algeria win in its last match meant Algeria would be the first team to reach the knockout stage unless West Germany beat Austria by one or two goals -- in which case both European sides would advance. After Germany's Horst Hrubesch put the Germans in front in the 10th minute, both teams realized they were through if results held and basically stopped playing for the final 80 minutes (0 shots, barely any tackles, etc.).

The incident is what prompted FIFA to change the format of the final match of the group stage. All four teams in a group now play their third match simultaneously to avoid this scenario.

Yeah, that was Bradley's goal. He hasn't been all that good during those two games, but yesterday he could've won it on his own.

Anyways, there's no way any team plays for a draw here(though, could still happen) so it will be interesting to see how this game will be played.
I'm expecting an US team trying to not give room to Germany and playing a counter attacking style. Should be "fun" watching our four CB's trying to defend counter attacking guys with speed like the ones the US has. :roll:

As for Germany. Both Khedria and Boateng are questionable. Though, I don't expect Khedira starting anyways and think Schweinsteiger will get the nod.
I also hope that Lahm finally plays where he belongs, at FB, but I doubt that's ever going to happen as Jogi always does as his captain wishes...

my pessimistic self says germany wins 3-1. then we just hope and pray that ghana doesn't beat portugal. ghana has looked the better team so far, but hopefully portugal has some pride and gets a result.

Nah. We keep on playing Lahm in midfield, so all you have to do is put some pressure at him.
It will also be funny watching the lil one trying to compete with Bradley and Jones, who normally just run over him.
But hey, the almighty Pep's playing him there so this has to work, as Lahm's just soo intelligent that he can easily play every position... :lol:

brazil, chile, mexico and netherlands have been 4 of the most impressive teams in the tournament so far. crazy they are all stuck playing each other this early in the knockout rounds.

Interesting thing is there is not so unprobable scenario South Americans teams would occupy whole quarter of the play off bracket thus securing a South American semifinalist:

Brazil vs Chile/Colombia vs Uruguay

Also, the remaining two, Argentina and Ecuador can face each other in first round.
