I think Sac is under the cap so you would just take back JV. The idea is to get below the tax line.

And probably no way they include Murray, though it doesn't work straight JV for Simons. Unless they trade Monk, not sure where Simons fits either.

Re: 2025 Offseason Trade and Free Agency Thread (The Fun Never Stops Edition)
We don't know yet.
The 28th pick has a 100% full scale slot of $2.3 million but teams can offer as little as 80% ($1.85 million) or as much as 120% ($2.7 million)
My concern is the Celts wanted to pay 80%, every prospect said "no way" and demanded the typical 120%. But there is negotiating room between 80% and 120%. Did Hugo's agent say we won't accept $1.85 but we won't require the full $2.7.
That's what we'll find out when Hugo signs, did he get the full $2.7 or some lesser amount (though more than the 80% of scale) and that's why he was the pick. Because Rasheer Fleming's agent is Rich Paul, I don't think he would take less than the 120%.
But maybe every prospect was offered the same deal, and the Cs just took Hugo Gonzalez because he was the top prospect on the board, which would be the best outcome. And we'll know soon enough

League sources say Boston has been so focused on its accounting that it took an interesting approach with the No. 28 pick.
In considering various prospects to select with that late first-round turn Wednesday night, sources say that the Celtics initially looked for players who would be willing to accept 80% of their rookie scale contract salary, which is the lowest figure first-round picks can be paid.
According the story you're reacting to, the Celtics did what you're saying they should have done.

I don't want to draw conclusions based on unconfirmed and/or uncomplete rumors.
But why would a player agree to accept less than 120%? Or otherwise, why should a player accept less than they think they are worth? If they don't think they are worth it, at best they would appear to lack some self confidence, and at worst they know they aren't worth it.
If accounting is a top priority, cool. But I fault Brad for not trading the pick if that was the situation. Offering 80% up front is a bad look, it hurts the team's reputation most pertinently amongst the players and agents propositioned, and I would guess that you are likely to end up with a trash player anyways if they are agreeing to 80 up front.

Celtics gave 2 supermax contracts, JT and JB, so the team's reputation will not be hurt because they're limiting their spending after 2 seasons of heavy spending.

Only reasons I can think of for the player is:
- if he feels like it might be his only opportunity to get drafted in the first round. 80% of a guaranteed contract is better than 0%.
- he loves the team fit, thinks it'll help his development and he'll recoup the money (and more) on his second contract.

The Venture Capitalist Celtics are not paying any taxes this season. No ifs and buts about that...

Re: 2025 Offseason Trade and Free Agency Thread (The Fun Never Stops Edition)
Celtics are missing 57 points per game from JT, KP, and Jrue.
Back to back 60 wins during the regular season was due to the Cs being in the top 5 in offense and defense.
If the Cs trade Simons and the Cs don't get a scorer back in return, we will see a lot of what happened to the Cs in Game 6 of the semis against the Knicks.
Cs better get Vooch or Coby White if Simons is the one going out.

They just need to hit 188m and they will just pay minimal tax.

New idea for modified Jrue trade:
Bulls get RWIII, Tillman, and Simons
Portland gets Jrue
Boston gets Dosunmu and Vucevic
Portland essentially trades RWIII for the 2 2nds they were supposed to give us. And we essentially trade those potential 2 seconds for the opportunity to turn Simons into Dosunmu and Vuc.
White, Dosunmu, Pritchard, and some JB is solid at guard spots. You then finally add a decent big even though he sucks at defense.

Dosunmu and Vooch will just equal Simons and Tillman.
No cap savings and that's the goal.
Just Vooch for Simons is good enough.

That was under the old ownership. These cuts are clearly coming at the new owner's behest.

I don't think it's a big deal.
But if this trend continues then that's another story.
Brad must really see something in Hugo because the Cs could have stashed him abroad this season.

No. Wyc is still president for the next couple seasons. They're getting ready to clear the decks to make the next retool around the J's or prepare for Tatum not being a 1 or 2 and having to find another guy to pair with brown to make this work for the next 3-5 years.

Right now in unfinished rosterland, the big forward is either Jaylen Brown, Hauser or Niang. That's not going to happen, is it?
a) it doesn't really matter that much..it's a bridge year, we're not really trying to win this year..what matters more is what the roster looks like in 26-27 when Tatum is back at full health for the full season
b) We'll probably do quite a bit of double big lineups next season, rotating Horford, kornet, amari, queta and Tillman in and out at the 4 and the 5. With Niang/Hauser/JB and maybe Walsh and maybe Craig getting some mins at the 4..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

We needed to make these cuts no matter who owned the team.
The roster was trending old, injury-risked and unathletic. It needed to be reworked absent anything but a title.
We also faced massive team-building penalties by staying in the second apron.

[Jake L. Fischer] The Spurs, league sources say, are looming as a prominent landing spot for big men on the free agent market. Another center target, sources say, that rival executives expect San Antonio to pursue: Boston's Luke Kornet.
"The Spurs' desire to add to its frontline became apparent on the day before the NBA Draft, when I first reported that San Antonio was chasing Kristaps Porzingis before Boston agreed to send the 7-footer to Atlanta.
Now the Spurs, league sources say, are looming as a prominent landing spot for big men on the free agent market as well.
On Saturday afternoon we reported San Antonio's rising interest, among other teams, in trying to lure rugged French forward Guerschon Yabusele away from Philadelphia.

The Celtics' 29-year-old big man, who has yet to earn north of $3 million in any single season in his eight-year NBA career, appears to have a real shot to cash out in this summer's midlevel market."

a) Can change if the Cs are 30-20 or 28-22 by trade deadline.
If the Cs have losing record by deadline, I think Cs will officially enter bridging.
