Siakam tries too hard to draw the foul first and make the shot second, instead of going up and trying to make the shot first and worrying about the foul second. That's why he ends up throwing a wild shot up. He's got the height advantage and could easily rise up and shoot over Harden. But no.
I find this take kind of amusing because of what people have been complaining about over the past few months on here concerning Siakam. Not that a "board" needs to have consistency, because it's made up of a lot of different people with different opinions. But I've seen a lot of people on here argue that Pascal actively tries to avoid getting fouled (trying too hard to get a good shot) and that's holding him back. Obviously both things can't be right.
Part of the problem is that Pascal doesn't get many calls to begin with. He is an emerging star, not a MADE star yet. That respect will come soon, but not right now. He needs to keep improving and continue his play for a few more years for the respect to kick in.
To your point about both can't be true. It can, depending on the situation. I find Pascal avoids contact when he attacks the basket facing up. When you face up, there is usually space between you and your defender. When he attacks, he tends to try to maintain that space to score instead of inviting the contact as he attacks the basket. Obviously when you're taking a jump shot, you want space, but when you're attacking the basket, you want contact. He avoids contact in his drives to the basket.
Now, playing with your back to the basket, there is usually contact as you try to back your man up and the defender is trying to hold his own. It is when he has his back to the basket, that he tries too hard to draw a foul and is usually unsuccessful. In part because he is not a post player and still needs a bit of work on how to maneuver down there. He also does not know how to draw fouls in the post or bait his post defender into committing a foul.
When Pascal gets fouled, it's usually the defender fouling him, rather than contact he created to draw the foul.
