Fields has been up-and-down in performance this season but he also recently came off the disabled list, so I would think the team wants to see how how he's holding up health-wise and how consistent he is in recapturing his top form.

Baez is a hot mess right now, so I don't even want to waste a thought towards giving him consideration, season stats be damned. If Roberts wants to give him opportunities in games (preferably in low-leverage situations) for the remaining regular season, I'm okay with that, but I have little-to-no faith that this guy will be salvageable for this year.

I have no problems with either Granderson or Buehler occupying postseason roster spots mostly because there are no better alternatives available at the moment. I'm concerned that Cingrani won't make the cut, but I like him better than Avilan right now.

Tony #2's career numbers are atrocious. I can't trust that going into the post season. I prefer the known quality of Avilan. Walker is the wildcard, his potential outmatches everyone in competition for the last couple of spots of the bullpen, but I don't believe a kid who had trouble at the beginning of each level he moved up from, will suddenly figure things out in the post season as a true rookie.
if no to Fields or Baez, we really should consider giving a shot to Ross and have him be a middle reliever. I still like his knuckle curve, and with a good lead by our catchers, it can be very useful in spot relieving situations too. he's got pretty good spin rate on his slider too. against right handed hitter in say, on top of the 7th, two outs and a runner on second, we are up 4-1 and here comes Goldie to bat, even with knowing a HR won't lose the lead, Ross is probably a good choice to have over Baez.

Cingrani Improved Under Pitcher Whisperer

Cingrani's career numbers allowed us to pay an inexpensive price for him in trade, but the Dodgers identified something about him where he was not being used properly by the Reds. He has taken to Honeycutt's instruction quite well and has quickly made improvements that have allowed him to post some truly impressive numbers as a Dodger, which is what we were hoping for when we traded for him.

Why would we penalize him for being misused by another organization when he's actually living up to the expectations of what we had in mind and then some when we traded for him?

Chris Taylor's career numbers weren't impressive before he joined the Dodgers and he's been one of our biggest contributors for the season. Sometimes you have to not look a gift horse in the mouth and ride the hot hand.

could be the case and many has done so under Rick. but the sample size is... 12 innings plus. that's like saying the month of September is the norm of the dodgers today. it was an aberration from complacency, and the normalization of statistical swings.

well to be honest, I haven't paid much attention to his "stuff" as of late, I remember him mostly as the guy who couldn't separate his pitches very well. his fastball to his changeup to his sliders were all too similar in speed and breaks. maybe that will be my homework assignment for the game.

Unfair Breaks

Post#1344 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 24, 2017 1:43 am

Forsythe was charged with an error on the throw to 1B but Farmer couldn't handle it off the bounce, which was perfectly placed. Barnes was just robbed of a hit. And now Ryu was just plunked by a line-drive comebacker to the mound. Hyun-Jin made the play but his obviously bothered by his left forearm and has to leave the game with 1 out and nobody on base in the 3rd inning.

Dammit.

Currently at dinner missing the game.

That could ruin Ryu's chance of making the postseason roster.

honestly, McCarthy is looking good. he did give up a few hits and a run now, but his location is right where it needs to be for him. hitting that lower edge of the plate to both sides.

BTW, if Seager is managing his throwing arm's pain and his performance is steeply declined due to it, then why is Dave playing Seager tonight in a wasteful game against MadBum of all people? why not give him a day off, let him rest it one more day, and play Taylor at SS, Logan is already on 3rd but should be on 2nd with Farmer on 3rd where he is used to playing, let the energetic youngster who isn't hurt, in Bellinger, to play his natural position? still 1 lefty in the lineup among the infielders, and it's the guy who is healthy. Dave puts Kyle on 1st and he couldn't catch a somewhat tough but for a first baseman standard, a routine ball in the dirt, giving a throwing error on Logan. Dave continues to do some peculiar things for my taste. and I don't consider myself a true old school baseball guy as I fully embrace analytics.

even O'koyea Dickson should be given a chance at 1B before Kyle. Dickson IS the starting 1B of our AAA club.

Curious Case of Corey Seager

Post#1350 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 24, 2017 3:12 am

I was wondering myself why we wouldn't rest Seager as well, but based on Roberts' comments, the team seems more inclined to deal with managing his elbow since it won't be healed in time for the playoffs. I guess they want him to get used to his sore elbow and give him as many reps in the field and at the plate as possible to get more used to it.

watching live and hearing the sound of the ball hitting his arm, it looked worse than Turner's a few days ago. it is off the bat in a line drive. that had to be close to 110 MPH.

that's a sound logic. a guy is hurt and he won't be fully healed before the post season, so play on the injured elbow more.... against the dominant lefty like MadBum... as the only lefty in the starting lineup against him....did Dave channel the spirits of Frank Jobe to come up with that answer?

Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?

Post#1353 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 24, 2017 3:19 am

Is Buehler giving up his spot on the postseason roster to McCarthy? He comes into the 8th inning and gives up 2 hits and a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

bases loaded and nobody out.

do you really want walker on our playoff roster? 2017 isn't his year. he looks like he should start 2018 at the AAA ball club.

In and Out of Trouble

Just like that, Walker strikes out a batter and then induces a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

got one out, but even if he makes it out without harm, we can't depend on this kid for the first real chance at the ring since 88.

he did get himself out, but can't count on this kid doing the same in the post season on an inning ending GIDP.
