The answer with Donte, if a trade is inevitable (and I don't think it is), is to try and leverage his RFA status into a sign and trade for either an impact player or a pick from a team that wants him. That's what helps us circumvent the cap and still get someone who's worthwhile, either via TPE or actual contract matching.

One game samples are sick and all though.
It's the beginning of his regression. By the end of the year his numbers will be ugly. Everyone can see that, except someone blinded by fandome.
You honestly say the most unintentionally funny **** ever.
Guy has an awesome 2 months to start the season.
IT'S THE BEGINNING OF HIS REGRESSION!
You wanna talk about blinded by fandom, oof. Tubby Tucker though.
PJ has played well for the Heat.
but since you're basing that list on VORP, his last two years he had -0.8 and 0.1. So, yeah, one would expect some regression from him. Unless you think shooting for his career best at age 36 was somehow predictable.
The following statements are not mutually exclusive: 1) PJ is playing well so far this year, 2) Based on past experience, his performance is not sustainable, and 3) It would have been a mistake for the Bucks to pay him (at least what the Heat is paying).

I don't want to trade Donte. This is another year to go for broke. I think that *IF* healthy, Donte's defense gives something that they need, and it's different from Allen or Hill. In a long playoff run, some series you need the defenders, and at other times you need the shooting. Having Jrue and Donte, and Hill, for guard defense, that would be really helpful. If Donte contributes to a championship run, and then leaves because you can't resign him, that's fine. Donte, Allen, Hill, Pat, none of them are redundant. keep them all.

Nah, there's gonna be a time where we trot out a Jrue/Hill/Donte/Middleton/Giannis small-ball death lineup and it's gonna be awesome and people are gonna wonder why we ever thought trading Donte was a serious thought.

Agreed. Keep em all and go for the title. A repeat cements you in NBA history. A 2nd round exit makes you a fart in the wind as Ron Wolf was fond of saying regarding the 1997 Packers.
The beauty of this Donte news is that they'll have a solid 8 weeks of seeing if he holds up, before the trade deadline. And will know more about Brook then as well.

Yeah, this is good news.
If Donte holds up and returns to form, and Brook is ready to go by the start of the playoffs (close to full health but only playing advantageous matchups) we have a shot at a repeat.

Then we'll likely lose since we couldn't grab a board against opposing bigs, mark big wings, and save the legs of our big 3 for offense. Subsequently we'll wonder why we didn't learn the lesson from the 2 times we were bounced from the playoffs.
Or, they could follow the template of the successful run, while ideally even upgrading from a PJ who is undersized & looked like a shell of himself, but still helped us get over the hump because that role is so vital to a team w/ this composition.

Bud on Donte

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Donte is a big key to that small ball lineup because of his defense and rebounding.
I don't think people realized what a huge loss he was last year because he's not a shooter necessarily. He is a highly impactful player though for this team with or without Grayson Allen.

So what the heck does that mean? Was he supposed to go the Herd to play with them and get in game shape, but then they decided to not do that because he wasn't ready (for the Herd)?

The Herd don't have a game until Sunday so I guess they wanted him to practice with them? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

portis said hed resign for peanuts but made us promise tuckers ass was out of the front court. portis made us choose.
last year he was behind tucker on the depth chart when it mattered and dont forget he literally didnt play against brooklyn. allen and ddv coming back those backcourt minutes were gone. i could see portis telling management hed come back for the deal he did if he was gauranteed not to compete with frontcourt minutes with tucker.
yeah yeah yeah sure hes gonna get backup center minutes but if im portis and im looking out at the floor pissed about whose in front of him getting minutes it starts and ends with pj.
isnt it even weird we brought in NO frontcourt help to start the season? like literally mamu thats it?
anyway...just a thought but i could see a scenario where portis gave an ultimatum. he would have been turning down starters roles elsewhere
holiday/hill
allen/ddv/pat
middleton/pat/tucker
giannis/tucker/portis
lopez/giannis/portis
thats a 10 man playoff rotation with everybody healthy. if tucker comes back its not rocket science that either portis or tucker just simply doesnt even play. there is no chance portis takes that chance on the deal he just signed
The story is much simpler from what I've heard
Bucks did not expect Portis to return and all but expected to reach a deal with PJ
When Bobby said he'd come back at a number that Bucks could manage, they had to make the choice on PJ and went with the younger and cheaper Bobby.
This makes me feel us Bucks fans had an impact on signing Bobby.
I think many of us felt Bobby priced himself out of mke and we was going to get a much better offer elsewhere, but the love of the fans, the chance to repeat, and the feeling of being home gave him second thoughts. He had certain conditions on that handshake and the team met them.
Its just cool to think the fans may have impacted keeping Bobby around.

I think it's clear that Done is going to the Herd to practice, and not to play (at least for now). NBA teams barely practice during the RS due to traveling etc.

DDV getting all these Smart/Hood/Wes/Semi minutes will be sweet. He ain’t go nowhere. He is an awesome 6th for any team. Finally we will have that experience.

[...] A factor in keeping McCollum in Portland had always been Olshey, who in the summer of 2020 was offered Jrue Holiday for McCollum and three first-round picks. Olshey turned it down, in part because he would have only one guaranteed season of Holiday before he became a free agent [...].

Would some of you be willing to do that if the offer was out there (now that Jrue is locked up)? Like not keeping the picks, but utilizing them to get an upgrade for another position? E.g.:
Bucks out: Jrue, Lopez
Bucks in: CJ, Turner
Blazers out: CJ, Picks
Blazers in: Jrue
Pacers out: Turner
Pacers in: Lopez, Picks
Jrue has been awesome recently and instrumental to us winning a championship but he's also got a lot of mileage and his fit with Giannis on offense isn't always great. If I was GM I definately wouldn't hang up the phone straight away if something like this was offered.

McCollum is all of 9 months younger than Jrue while making the same amount of money over the next 3 years. And at this point it's pretty clear that Jrue is and always has been the straight up better player. So nah, it's a non-starter.

Thing about trades is that they're so specific to themselves, the question "do you trade Donte?" is unanswerable without a ton of information about what's available as a return, what the roster looks like at the time of the trade, etc.
I'm open to trading him, but I'm not in favor of moving him to "restock the cupboard". Still, it's not hard to *imagine* an offer of future assets I'd accept. It's just hard to call it realistic.
If they've already decided they're not going to move forward with him, it'd be negligent to not consider any offers they get, but, based on his circumstances and ours probably say no thanks to all of them.
