Nobody, and I mean nobody, on this board had CP3 even close to a top 5 player at the end of the RS. Harden basically carried that team all year leading the MVP race while CP3 was along for the ride having multiple stinker games.

He has one good 4th quarter in game 5 (not a game 7 - nothing was “on the line”) of the Utah series, and doesn’t disappear last night, and now he’s suddenly better than Curry and Durant?!?! - two consistent top 3 players for the past 5 years, biggest superstars in the league, 3 MVPs between them, etc.?? You people are smoking some good stuff.

Dude is 33 years old and hasn’t accomplished anything till this season after teaming up w/ Harden on an already really good team. When he was the head honcho on “his teams” he couldn’t do squat. He’s in his 13th year in the league - 13th.

Paul's impact numbers were better than Harden's and some of the best in the league.

I’m sure players like Rondo and Marcus Smart have really good impact numbers too, probably Andre Roberson too - doesn’t make any of them better than Steph Curry or a top 5 player. Can you link the listing of impact numbers?

I assume you mean on/off? Yeah Paul was better, but using a small edge in on/off when there’s a huge edge in actual production is reaching at best.

I don't think that's been the case. I mean harden is still getting his points at .585 ts% which is obviously good, but he's been clearly below his season averages and he has been bad from 3. Of course it's not all Curry but the warriors help defense too.

And by actual production I assume that means box score? Because Paul is obviously far better on defense which won't show up. He's not a huge liability on that end that other teams consistently exploit. In fact he's a huge positive on that end, rarely allowing perimeter penetration.

Well he has been isolated with Harden many times. That's been the Rockets plan to attack him and it really hasn't worked all that great, I mean relativity speaking. I'm not giving him 1st team all defense or anything.

I'm not arguing Paul is better, just saying it's closer than people think. Paul is not just a sidekick.

Curry is totally hopeless when guarding Harden, I understand Harden has a decent size advantage and is an all time great offensive player, but it just adds to the evidence that as a one on one defender he is just weak. People in the past talked about how he was a legitimately good defender. I don’t see it, outside of a few steals here and there he does almost nothing else imo.

Harden has been good but not great this series. He's shooting 31% from 3, his ts% is good but down from the regular season, and his assists are down as well.

The rockets won 2 games based on defense, not offense from harden.

Except this isn't how players are judged. Guys like Russell, Shaq and Dirk didn't have every skill in the book, but they were immensely impactful in what they did well, dwarfing the impact of guys with more well-rounded skillsets.

Really? Steph has been Harden's primary defender this series so far, and considering Harden might be the single best ISO scorer in the entire league at this point, I'd say he's done a good job.

1. Shooting

Shooting doesn't quite cover it. Scoring in general Curry is better than Paul. A better four-level scorer and more efficient overall. I don't think this one's close.

2. Passing

This is Paul, but historically Paul's had a much more on-ball role than Curry, so naturally he's going to accumulate more assists. I'll give the edge to Paul here, but I don't think it's a huge discrepancy.

3. Rebounding

This is Steph.

4. Turnovers

Paul is definitely more careful with the ball and generally makes better decisions, but in some cases that's not necessarily a good thing. Paul loves to sit and dribble on the ball for 15 seconds before he makes his decision, while the ball is usually flying out of Steph's hands rather quickly, so generally he's going to commit more turnovers, but that also pushes the pace of games and his offense in ways that Paul just can't do.

5. Steals:

I'd actually give the edge to Paul right here, but both are really good at getting steals and deflections because of their quick hands and BBIQ.

6. Clutch

What are you basing this on? How is a player who's never made it to the WCF before his 13th season supposed to be more clutch than a player who's lead one of the best offenses we've ever seen to the tune of 2 championships by the time he's 30?

Definitely Paul, though Steph continues to get criminally underrated here, especially from a team defense standpoint.

Chris Paul wouldn't be the best player in the finals either playing against LeBron James in all of them. That's a non-argument.

You could also make strong cases that Curry should have won the Finals MVP in '15 and in '17. Several metrics back this up, even if the common narratives don't.

Furthermore, no one's blaming Chris Paul for not winning the title. But the dude never even made it out of R2 prior to this season, and had plenty of talent to do so for multiple years. He lost a 3-1 lead to Houston while James Harden was watching from the bench.

Curry is overrated, thats for sure. But most of his hype comes from being a transcendent star because he does things out of the norm- like pulling up from 3 and making it from like 45 feet. He's not a great defender, and he's not a great passer, but he can rack up 4 3s in a row and put your team up by 20 points in a hurry. He also happened to have one of the greatest single seasons of all time during the 73 win season so you can't take that away from him, but yeah, he's still overrated by the media and millennial fans.
That said, he's probably still the best PG in the NBA...top 2 or 3 at the worst, and he's gonna go down as the greatest shooter of all time so that holds a ton of weight.

With everything you are saying about him.. how is he overrated? Nobody is saying he is the greatest of all time.

You rationalized/justified Curry in multiple categories while not giving the same benefit for CP3.

For example, you say Paul is only a slightly better passer because he is more on-ball even though there is a big discrepancy and you cannot just chalk it up to system because at the same time, Curry has has a superteam and therefore better passing options available to him. Paul has widely been analyzed as being the greatest passer of this generation, meanwhile, Curry has never been lauded for exceptional passing and only has a few groundbreaking passes per season.
For the "HUGE" scoring advantage Curry supposedly has, Paul has a "HUGE" playmaking one. See, I could do the same thing and argue that because of Paul's role, he does not have the opportunity to score as prolifically as Curry does.

Now for clutchness, again you resort to a logical fallacy that team success directly = individual prowess. I know this is such a subjective topic which is why i said its debatable, but the reason i personally lean toward cp3 is because in the biggest moments that come to mind Curry has underperformed, whereas Paul has generally maintained his level of play.

I can agree that Curry's off ball skill is oft-overlooked and definitely is a huge part of his game.

Curry has played with two finals MVP's, the DPOY and I haven't even mentioned Klay Thompson.

He has played on teams that can win entire playoff series WITHOUT HIM.

You cannot compare their teams at all. I would take Klay Thompson alone over anybody Paul has played with, especially in a playoff series.

Look at Klay's game 6 against OKC. Tell me someone Chris has played with that is capable of doing something like that. You can't. He has never played with that kind of firepower.
