Great trade for the Celtics I think they wanted a scorer to fill in for Tatum next season. Not sure what the Blazers are doing though other than to be a little better defensively.

Yeah it's a great move. Simons is also expiring in two seasons so that's getting off money that would still be owned to Jrue otherwise (at $37m)

What do the Blazers get from this deal?

It's not like Holiday is a great floor general and he doesn't really fit the timeline of the young Blazers roster since Holiday is going to be the elder statesman of the Blazers team filled with early 20 somethings.

The two thoughts that came to mind is they legitimately think Holiday is an upgrade for the team in terms of leadership/defense so their team could build on this past season's somewhat surprising success and they didn't want to negotiate his extension which he's eligible for.

I just don't completely understand giving up 2 seconds to do it, especially when Boston has been pretty public about trying to drop salary. This deal drops Boston's salary by about $5m (not a small sum when you consider luxury tax) but maybe more importantly, it's getting them off Jrue's massive contract. I thought I read the report wrong because I thought the 2nds were going TO Portland which would've made more sense

Stretching Beal helps nothing. On the contrary, it will hurt more than help. I've been over this several times as have others. Keeping Beal and letting him expire the year after this upcoming season is a far better proposition than having $100M dead money on our books, which will affect our cap, for FIVE MORE YEARS.

I'm not entirely sold on trading off him either if it's going to cost us first round picks. We're already woefully short in that department and need all the help we can manage even though Ishbia will, almost certainly, mess it up again due to being impatient and ignorant.

Or if he wants to waive his no trade clause and the Suns can do a bad contract Yankee swap that's fine.

I don't disagree with you and since its not my money, I could care less about the luxury tax. And you are right, it would be an additional three years against the cap when you might need the money. I still think that if Ishbia were smart with Beal, O'Neale and Allen these next two years - he could have a bunch of cap space

I was just noting that for Ishbia - its not about the roster -its about saving cash of why he wants to stretch Beal

Sure sure - they can spend 14m on a player on the MLE but this would be after trading two similar players in Allen and O'Neale

I wouldn't do that trade. Thunder wanting to do that suggest there's a diamond in the rough to fall outside top 5... just like Jalen Williams did for them.

Keeps proving true that when you're looking for the deals that look best on paper, it works out more often than not when your trade partner is one of those teams always (at times hopelessly) clinging on to being kinda in the middle between tanking and competing. When you deal with teams like Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, New Orleans, Sacramento, Phoenix, you tend to win the asset game. Your decent-but-not-great veterans that are sometimes on mediocre contracts have a home in places like those.

Can be that a big factor in the Porzingis to the Suns stuff?

I am not gonna lie...a somewhat healthy (+60 games) Porzingis can be an absolute game changer.

If we can somehow turn Beal into Porzingis, I'm 100% for it.

Unfortunately, not possible. Especially given they just traded for an SG in Simons who I expect they'll try to get the most out of. And money-wise, they can't aggregate salaries and Beal just makes far too much

My immediate reaction is it makes no sense for the Blazers. But they just traded Simons and 2nds for Jrue Holiday. I don't really know what they are doing.
