Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 7
Watching the Hawks vs Magic game and I thought of something. Is Josh Smith a fair comparison to Derrick Williams? If so, does this mean that D. Will can play the SF position in the NBA? I haven't watched many Arizona games and had no idea he could shoot threes, which is a must for the Raptors if they're going to pair him with Demar.

^^ physically I guess the comparison is similar (I don't think Derrick is quite the elite athlete that Smith is), but I'd say that Derrick looks more impactful on the offensive end, vs. Josh who is a better defensive talent. I do think Derrick can be a very successful SF in the league though (and it's good to hear that that's the position he wants to play).

I think fredericklove made the Larry Johnson comparison which seemed more accurate to me.

I'm not sure how the draft lottery works, anyone know what's the lowest our pick can drop to (I heard 6th somewhere, not sure though)?

1st = 15.6%
2nd = 15.7%
3rd = 15.6%
4th = 22.6%
5th = 26.5%
6th = 4%

I feel like we have a good chance at getting 1st/2nd. Just my opinion though. If we fall to 5-6 take BPA.

the way I see it, we've got a 31.3% chance of securing Kyrie/Williams, a 64.7% chance of securing one of the 3 bigs (38.2% chance that we get some sort of choice between them), and a 4% chance that we end up with none of the above and take Knight (or maybe Walker).

Just a question. I know many have their point of view about Kemba/Knight. How would the board feel is B.C reached on TJones because he didn't like the pg's in the draft. Basically say we fall to 5-6. Would you guys be alright with T Jones/anyone? Or would you guys prefer to stick with either Kemba or Brandon?

Here's another thing about Kanter that everyone should think about. If we don't get Irving we're likely to roll with Bayless this upcoming year and the one area that Bayless is the weakest is his ability to get everyone involved and run a very good offense.
Kanter gives you a offensive post option with decent passing skills so we're not completely reliant on Bayless setting up every play. That's a problem we've had to deal with for the last 3 years and reason we're so dependent on Jose because we haven't anyone else to set up a play.
James Johnson might be a secondary ball handler / play maker but he's still a bit away before he becomes consistent. With Kanter you get a guy where you can throw the ball into him in the post and let him create for others. That takes a lot of pressure off Bayless to be the primary play maker.
I think Kanter fits in really well with a few of our guys. He compliments Ed/Amir very nicely as the big body stay-at-home C that can D up on the big guys and be a lane intimidator/rebounder, he works well with Bayless as a post threat and he works well with our wing rotation by setting big screens and can step out and hit the long J in Pick n Pop situations.
Really, as long as he hasn't forgotten how to play basketball in the last year and he's able to adjust to the speed of the NBA he's a great fit for us overall.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the Bleacherreport, those guys are just casual fans posting their opinions just like we do here.
Now, I like JVal and even though it might not seem like it I have him just a shade under Kanter at 3; however, to call him the best player in this draft in 4 years is a reach. We really don't have any idea how any of these players will do in the NBA.
Everyone is just making their best guess although Irving does project as the best player using the eye test.

Bleacher Report is notorious around these parts for basically being written by fans with little to no inside information or contacts.

Workouts are going to determine who the better prospect is between Jonas and Enes. I'm really not worrying about Bismack. Unless he shuts those two down in competition.

Wait so we have a better shot at getting 5th place than the 3rd place we are currently in? How does that work?

Everyone in the lottery has a chance at the top 3 picks whereas only 4 teams do for 5th place.

JV is a great prospect but the Bleacher Report overlooks the fact that Kanter made him his son on numerous occasions.

haha, true say. hell, Kanter has been leaving seeds whereever he goes, Sully apparently calls him dad (j/k), and Nazr Mohammed was apparently his bitch as well.

Please can someone please explain to me why they would consider taking a potential tweener in Derrick Williams, but want nothing to do with say, Brandon Knight? It seems both don't have a 100% set position yet the stance on both is rather different. Just because Williams says he wants to play SF does not mean he can and same with Knight at PG. Thanks.
