The thing that always baffles me with players who might be mainly concerned with money is, why aren't the advertising revenues factored in?
Suppose Melo has to choose between (i) accepting an extension now with the Nets, and (ii) waiting til the offseason to sign with us. (I'm not saying these are his only choices. I'm just asking you to suppose this for the sake of the argument.) If he accepts an extension with the Nets as per (i) he will be playing for a losing franchise with a small fanbase. He obviously knows that if he wants to win games and play under the bright lights, the Nets are a poor choice. The only reason given why Melo might prefer (i) over (ii) is to cash in on the bigger contract. But Melo obviously knows that he can more than make up for the lost cash in terms of increasing ad revenue.
So why does Melo have any real motivation whatsoever to sign an extension with NJ? He can always sign a max FA contract with us in the offseason, and recoup all his financial losses and more through greater marketing revenue. What am I missing??
