I know people get caught up in positions even in today’s positionless day, but why CAN’T RJ always initiate the offense when he’s in? Maybe he doesn’t have to take it up but he’s a major asset in this way.

He’s not a full court dribbler but he knows the right play and sees the court. Seems like overthinking it not to let him have the ball just about always like any point in the halfcourt. Which yeah makes Elf useless.

If we were going to tank one more season we should at least of done what the hawks did. Play the young guys, with OLD vets backing them up. Not these reclamation projects. I can't imagine what the thought process is with this team. We would be a lot better off if instead of signing Randle, Payton and Noel we signed Melo, Rondo and Taj.

Young vets are going to be selfish players as they should be as they are trying to stay in the league!

But the Hawks made moves to actually compete.

i was just talking to the people mad we struck out in free agency. the draft is a different story altogether.

yeah it kinda just looked like they **** up.

They could have used the 25 on a pg like Flynn or Terry and then use 33 on Quickley and then could have just went youth and rolled with the results.

If they just do the same thing they do every year and play the vets over there young players it just shows they have no plan and simply just struck out in FA. It kinda does show that because they seemd to be serious about Hayward before his contract got out of control.

So I'm not giving them credit for doing notihng they just struck out.

i think so. people seem to be mad at berman, and he is trolling a bit, but i think the plan wasn't to tank. it's what he said it was. from the coach they hired to the players they drafted they were looking to be good soon. they just couldn't make it happen. they're not panicking afterwards but i don't know how much credit you want to give them for that. at this point, it's obvious that what the knicks really need to get good are some guys who are great at drafting. not just in the lottery everywhere. because that's the only way it will happen. walt perrin was supposed to be that. are you telling me that he said obi and a kid from kentucky were the guys he identified as sleepers ? and look, i don't know everything about drafting. maybe those kids will be great. but it looks mighty suspicious.

Anyone who is arguing from this perspective lost from the jump. Berman's idea that we were somehow fooled is built on the premise that this new, expensive FO wasn't trying to get better. The idea that they were trying to use this FA to build a better team and couldn't is not some gotcha moment. Of course the plan was to get better this year, that's why they were hired.

Hopefully they're also ready to operate on the next step now that FA didn't yield favorable results.

I'm going to leave with a positive note on Payton, his best knicks moment was when he tried to fight Jae Crowder last season during a 21 point blowout loss to Memphis. Maybe he will try to fight some more people next year during blowout losses

That doesn't mean it had to be Payton though

We could've gone after a different vet PG, one who could shoot, even if they're not as "talented" as Payton, and they'd be a better fit and facilitate RJ/Obi/Mitch's development better

Or keep 33 and draft Tre Jones who played with RJ at Duke. Even with Payton we don't get a starting caliber PG, but there were much better options than just running it back with him.

It's going to be a rough season for Obi to be honest, he's going to be playing minutes with Nerlens, Davis, Mitch and presumably Randle, none of them can shoot, which means he's going to have to be the floor spacer. The Noel signing is just dumb the more I think about it, on face value it seems like a good signing but when you stop and think about it, it means even if you start Mitch and Obi together you can't stagger their minutes because there will always be a dude that can't shoot coming into the lineup to replace one of them.

If they plan on playing Obi at the 5, it could get really ugly for him, he's just not strong enough for that.
