Just noticed that - a year after drafting two freshmen*, a junior, and a senior - Mitch really went back to the sophomore well.

(*LaMelo not technically a freshman, but works age-wise)

Both first round picks this year were sophs, which means 4/5 of Mitch's first round picks here were two-year guys. We even got a bonus one in the second round this year (Lewis), meaning exactly half of Mitch's picks have been sophomores or sophomore-age (Kulboka).

3 freshmen
7 sophomores
1 junior
3 seniors

Said it on draft night: I love drafting sophomores. I think having those two years of college play can be super beneficial.

I would say the most important now is preparing the after Hayward.
Hornets gonna need a pretty decent two ways sf project there while Hayward is still there to monitor his development (or as a mentor).

I still think Kupchak needs either to draft or trade for the second 'starish' player in the frontcourt this time. A top lottery pick would be really helpful, you dont rely on anybody else to make your choice. At least for next year since it's rather deep for decent (tall) bigs.

I agree, we are in luck because the 1 position that is pretty deep next year is SF.

Caleb Houstan, Mathew Cleveland, Kendall Brown, Jusaun Holt, Emitt Mathews JR, Both Gach, Johnny Juzang, Teddy Allen,
Teafale Lenard.

As well as the ones above are decent options. I think Mathew Mayer can really fit in here. I also like Teddy Allen who has had a weird career transfer wise but who is a bulldog. I like Teafale Lenard but I do not have enough info on him. He reminds me of when I liked Kai Jones who I had little info on but saw something there... Like Jones they are both thin but Lenard has a better handles.

I think that guy, a 2 way perfectly built 3&D (and a little more than that) SF, is already on the roster.

Dude is going to treat the Summer League like the playoffs. I feel sorry for the guy who tries to contest his first dunk. Just imagine how hyped he'll be with a full arena playing in Charlotte.

I really like how our draft came together....

I was a bit worried about taking Kai at 11 just because I was not sure if he was going to be a high impact guy this season and with just two picks in the late second it seemed like the draft could be a complete miss for us this year. Part of the reason I was warming up to a potential trade down.

So getting Bouknight who I feel will have a role day 1 as a scorer off the bench for the team at 11 was a good start. He answers some questions on the future of the backcourt next to LaMelo, gives us a clean break from Monk, and opens up some options with a Terry trade at the deadline depending on how the team performs.

The shocker of the night was trading back into the first for Kai, who at this point I love taking a chance on. If we don't get a ton from this season I am fine with it, because we have the solid production of Bouk. Also, picking up Mason Plumlee as a 1-year starter as Kai develops is the perfect situation in my mind. I am against really tying down long-term money at the Center Position unless he is the Jokic, Embiid, Bam tier and Plumlee saves us from overpaying Allen and Holmes like allstars... I feel comfortable rolling into the season with Plumlee, PJ, Kai, Thor and Carey all being able to log minutes at the 5 and really think adding someone like Noel or Theis is overkill.

Plumlee trade that netted us JT Thor was actually really productive from a team-building standpoint. I know Plumlee is not a sexy name, but when all is said and done he is probably just as productive as Theis, Noel would have been and I doubt either one of them is signing for less than 2/16. So in my mind, we actually did better for ourselves because at least this route we move up into a range where finding a rotation player jumps from 8.5% all the way up to 37%. Plumlee is a better passer than both of them and still active and athletic enough to give us a vertical spacer in the PnR with Melo.

Thor is a different player than Kai, he is a better volume three-point shooter, right now. Is still just 18 years old, so he is younger than Kai and he was decently productive on a well rounded Auburn team. He projects to be a 4 that stretches the floor and is able to block some shots on the perimeter... sound like anyone? (PJ). Don't expect much from him this season, but I do believe that he can be a useful player off the bench someday who can also play some minutes at Center. In fact, could easily see Kai and JT playing in the same front court where both can offer rim protection and give LaMelo infinite space to operate on the offensive side of the floor.

Lastly, Scottie Lewis gives us a point of attack defender and maybe he gives us some of what the Martin Twins did with hustle and defense as they are looking like they could be cap casualties.

Think we did a good job filling holes now, getting production now but also getting long term upside as well. I would rate this draft a 9/10.

I wonder if there's any chance all 5 of Mitch's 1st round picks will share the court during the season - LaMelo, Bouknight, Bridges, Washington, and Jones?

I actually think they compliment each other pretty well, especially if Bouknight and Bridges develop as playmakers.

I dont see why not as long as PJ comes in to camp in shape and ready to get serious.

TWO sleepers I like here...

The first guy is Mouhamadou Gueye. He is 6'11. Now when you watch his highlights I don't know whether he is that talented
or if he just thinks he is lol. He has some nice outside skills.

The second guy is Terrence Shannon JR. He reminds me of Kelly Obre but with less height.
He doesn't do much fancy but I could see him being an option 2nd round.
