If you strike out in FA, you want those high upside young guys, so hopefully one of the later ones pans out to a steal.
If you do well in FA, you have to fill out a bench, so you want those high upside young guys with the later picks, so hopefully one of them pans out and you have a big minute sixth man or 5th best starter for the long term so you don't have to spend the MLE on over the hill has beens each year, rinse and repeat...
Or they become trade assets to acquire a player like that or a high pick when you don't have access to one because your record was so good.
Foolish.
E tried to steer me in the direction that Rod has done well over the years drafting, but unless I eat my words and James becomes the next Millsap and all "my guys" become forgetable busts, this is another example of him being a terrible drafter with later picks when no brainers don't fall to him.
He has no creativity and no balls. No sight of the bigger picture, he sees the now and that's it.
Again, this maybe very premature because we may buy a second or two and he'll be telling me, "I told you so, calm down, it's not over, stop overreacting.", but me, Yi have little faith...
he has done well with the picks you can realistically hold him accountable for. But to look back after the point on late picks and say...oooh why didnt we take the needle in the haystack that you can see 3-5 years later should have been drafted. Now, I am Ok with your premise though. If you are going to strike out with low picks...strike out hard.
But hey....Marcus Williams was an all upside, steal potential pick who failed. Ditto to Sean Williams. he was ALL UPSIDE....FAILURE. Nenad WAS actually a steal. Ryan Anderson was a good pick...then we dealt him as a throw in...go figure that one...but we made a good pick there! Boone was taken because we absolutely needed the role big that year. There wasnt one better so you cant complain about that. Lets be honest...you knoew nothing about Zoran Planinic when we took him...them we all thought..OK did we just get another Euro steal like Nenad?
Brandon Armstrong was idiotic. No question. Twin...also feel free to rip that pick. But...we got into the final twice after that...and this takes us back to 2001...so where exactly are these horrible picks he made from 18 and beyond????
I have no problem with your premise. Want to take higher upside guys...fine. But its hard to pin draft mistakes for 20 something picks....even looking back on Rod as terrible picks. There are a crap shoot as it is...and he actually got a couple of good ones...and many of the ones he blew were upside picks....so? What's THE PROBLEM????!!!!
