A cheating one . . . or at least he was at Indiana according to the NCAA. The rules he broke were kind of silly, but he broke them repeatedly and brought major sanctions against his employer.

People change, but that's part of Sampson's story. I wonder how much weight, if any, Hinkie gives that in his decision-making process.

Recruiting violations mean nothing in the NBA to be fair and are taken with a grain of salt when nba looks at them.

I was honestly uncomfortable having a lifelong Celtic fan be our GM anyway tbh. Hinkie ftw

You may be right, but I would think part of player development is building good character in the guys on the team. Getting one of the most severe individual penalties the NCAA has ever handed out to a coach doesn't exactly go hand-in-hand with good character. But, from what I've read Sampson has owned up to his mistakes. Maybe having had to live that down could actually be a positive. He was Eric Gordon's college coach: More player info for Hinkie.

Didn't Hinkie said something like how he wants a coach who can RECRUIT stars to play in his team? He could be giving some hints. :D

He would like to have a coach in place to succeed Doug Collins sooner rather than later, but wants to make sure it’s a “championship-caliber coach” and somebody who’ll recruit other free agents to come to Philadelphia and quality players to stay here
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

I mean I know Lin's a relatively average player, but Toney Douglas is terrible and the guy Lin overtook when in NY. Although I do believe Sampson was coaching when Lin had that crazy game against the Spurs

Not sure which Sampson and Lin you were talking about, but Lin was one of only two players who started all 82 games for the Rockets this season (Omer Asik being the other one).

That Spurs loss where Harden sat out and Lin went crazy saved the Rockets' season. For 14 games after that they let Lin initiate the offense and, instead of hurting Harden's game, it made Harden's efficiency go through the roof. HOU blew out good teams by 20+ routinely to go 12-2 for the stretch (with one random McHale kneejerk loss at TOR where he overcompensated and adjusted to not set a single pick against Calderon for 3 quarters after two Asik fumbles in P&R. The Calderon who was arguably the worst P&R defender in the history of the NBA), then McHale suddenly decided to "adjust" to go all Harden again.

Without that stretch, HOU wouldn't even have made the playoffs. I reckon that was one of the main reasons why HOU top brass was not too happy with McHale. He is very "eye-testsy" and his attention span is measured in minutes with no ability to see the big picture and long-term trends. From what they said after McHale's hiring interview, I think they got the impression that he was the exact opposite of what he proved to be in actuality.

• Former Wolves boss David Kahn told some friends he thought he had the Sixers general manager job. It went to Houston assistant GM Sam Hinkie.

David Kahn, Sam Hinkie, Mike Zarren. Wonder who else. Man, that would've been something if they'd brought Kahn in to help make the decision on Bynum.

Zarren is believable and likely was considered, Kahn is utterly delusional. For proof of that, check out some of his trades and drafts.

My favorite:

“This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines,” Kahn said. “Last year it was Abe Pollin’s widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin: ‘We’re toast.’ This is not happening for us and I was right.”

Kahn is a complete moron. Hiring him would've only accoplished one thing: alienate the fan base so much that no one would notice the franchise moving to Seattle.

Interesting that it doesn't cite league sources or team sources or etc, just Kahn told buddies he would get it. I wonder if they even interviewed him, or if this is weird self promotion.

I thought this was interesting when I read it, short article regarding Injury Prevention Tech that was available at the combine for perusing I suppose. Our strength coach was specifically mentioned in the article and his new budget to spend on such technology, Hinkie seems to be overhauling everything which is reassuring, the more I read about Hinkie and his decisions the more I applaud his hiring.

Jesse Wright, strength coach for the 76ers, recently got himself a technology budget, something he'd never had before with the Sixers, a gift from his new GM Sam Hinkie.
