President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

But yeah, I'm serious about the first Dem appt to the court being Barack. I think he'd do a great deal of good there. And since I'm fine with them packing the courts, you can float Michelle as a possibility for one of the next few spots if you like.
Michelle for POTUS! She'd win in a NY minute.

Why? Because a couple things become more likely....
1. Democratic voters become apoplectic (to borrow a Steve Buckhantz term) and show up to the voting booth in larger numbers than were originally predicted. Biden likely wins (in my opinion).
2. Swing State Republicans probably lose their seat because they made a choice that only resonated with their base and not the general electorate of their state. Democrats take the senate because of this (again, all in my opinion).
3. With a newly elected Biden, a Democratic Senate and maintaining the House of Representatives, Democrats not only have the physical ability but now the public support and political clout to eliminate the filibuster, push through PR and DC into statehood (giving the Dems 4 extra Senators), as well as extending the Supreme Court.
I know what I wrote reads like a liberal fan fiction but I honestly think it could go down that way. Not sure I can see all 3 things coming to fruition if the Republicans DON’T push though the SC appointee.
It's too bad democratic voters didn't sink the "dagger" in 2016 when they had the chance when McConnell blocked Garland.
Hillary **** warned them that this would happen. The future of Roe vs Wade was on the table, the ACA was on the table, legalized discrimination was on the table. People of color where screaming and raising the alarm bells in 2016. I’m not going to get into who’s exactly to blame because I’m not going to bring up old grievances but everything that’s happening now and that will happen was predicted.
It’s going to be bad, very bad in fact. Just look at the positions Trump’s top pick has taken in Federal cases.
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/09/amy-coney-barrett-ginsburg-scotus-future.htmlFaced with two plausible readings of a law, fact, or precedent, Barrett always seems to choose the harsher, stingier interpretation. Can job applicants sue employers whose policies have a disproportionately deleterious impact on older people? Barrett said no. Should courts halt the deportation of an immigrant who faced torture at home? Barrett said no. Should they protect refugees denied asylum on the basis of xenophobic prejudice? Barrett said no. Should they shield prisoners from unjustified violence by correctional officers? Barrett said no. Should minors be allowed to terminate a pregnancy without telling their parents if a judge has found that they’re mature enough to make the decision? Barrett said no. Should women be permitted to obtain an abortion upon discovering a severe fetal abnormality? Barrett said no.There is no question that, if confirmed, Barrett would cast the fifth vote to either hollow out Roe v. Wade or overturn it altogether. Similarly, there is no doubt that Barrett would dramatically expand the Second Amendment, invalidating gun control measures around the country. It’s quite possible, perhaps even likely, that within a year of her confirmation, Americans will be forbidden from terminating a pregnancy in 21 states—but permitted to purchase assault weapons and carry firearms in public in every state.

Meh, you might as well have said it - it sounded like you were poopooing her background. Twas all in the tone of your verbiagery. Anyway, in seriousness, I agree with you. Barack would be a brilliant choice.

I get what Doc's saying though. Barack has a stronger con law background and a better fit for the bench. Michelle, while I'm sure is brilliant, doesn't have as deep a knowledge of the subject matter required for the job. Ideology aside, Gorsuch and Kav also do. Their problem is the ideology, and the temperament to allow their ideology to interfere with what should be objective decisions.
Also, Michelle would much rather take a 4-8 year gig as President than a lifetime appointment to the bench.
I think lifetime appointment to SCOTUS deters a lot of brilliant minds from taking the bench. You have to be a unique person to strive for that position, at its relatively low pay when you ostensibly have the brains to make more money, do less work, and enjoy your life with your family.
In theory, I think we can all agree on a 15 year term. The problem with fixed terms is that if it gets set on a cycle, it'll terminate to coincide with the presidential election cycle, meaning that in the long run, one party will always have the majority because of how the numbers work out. Then that leads to the machiavellian plays of justices resigning a year or two early to take advantage of the president de jour. It's all very messy.

Ok boomer.
The democrats are corrupt garbage. Anyone who defends that garbage ass needs to re-evaluate his/her life.

You've had the opportunity to watch Trump and his entire crew for 4 years, and you're labelling Democrats corrupt garbage. There's no common ground. Back to ignore you go.

I love how in a Democrat's worldview, only one party is allowed to be labeled corrupt at any given time. Biden's son is literally doing quid pro quo deals with a corrupt energy company in the Ukraine and getting serviced at Camelot, and people like you don't bat an eyelash.
Go ahead and put me on ignore, boomer. You said that like I cared about your opinion.

Yes I called you a boomer, grandpa. Go polish your walker, and quit whining.
I can't wait until the boomer generation goes away, so that the younger generation of leaders come in and actually make positive change for the world. Not the 90 year old corrupt wealthy scum like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden who thinks climate change can be fixed with half measured bull and wants to send feds after people for their college loans.

As a lefty I too resent being maneuvered to be forced to vote for the same old so-called centrist boondoggle. However, as I see it, the only job of Biden in the next administration will be to rubberstamp whatever policy Warren and AOC and the Squad et al push across his desk. And to appoint people (with the good advice of much smarter people) to make sure none of the malignant appointees of the current administration have hidden any poison pills to damage our country long term.
Said it before, Biden is a windsock. Whatever direction blows strongest is the way he flaps. The rest is up to us to organize and push and propose good policy and advocate for DC and PR statehood and try to chip away at the influence of big money, big media, and FB's monopoly on internet discourse. The rest is making sure we have an attack dog Attorney General whose job it is to hunt down the Hatch act violations and treasonous behavior of our current administration. This election cycle moved the overton window a few notches in the proper direction. Up to us to use that momentum. Be pissed all you want but right now there is no alternative. Way to dangerous to act otherwise.

There’s plenty of blame to go around for why everything isn’t better
but idealism without realism and pragmatism has led to disappointment and
apathy, low young voter participation which in turn has led to conservative victories
and a lack of progress on things many of us are of similar minds about.
I agree with you that the dems have issues about which I think they can do
much better. Unfortunately, running on those issues would be unlikely to
result in victories where there would at least be a chance for progress.
There are way too many of our fellow citizens who won’t go there
and don’t want to be convinced otherwise. In the meantime you’re
sounding like you want to throw out the bath water when we have
a severe drought, the well is dry and there’s no power available to
get water by other means.
I’m curious. Besides complaining about the ills of dems I’m
wondering how you direct your energies to address the issues
you care about.
