In the running for worst offensive player in the NBA for the last two years: #486 of 506 and #484 of 520 by ORPM.

Has Nurse had anytime coaching Birch with the National team?

Yup!

“He’s a great guy and down to earth. He’s kind of different from the other coaches I’ve had. He’s really new-school and I see why the Raptors are a very good team.”

Masai and Nick love the all D no O players. If they had it their way we'd win all our games and only average 80 ppg as a team.

He’s going to Biyombo us to the play-in tournament, I can already see it.

As frustrating as that is, I actually don’t mind this. He’s a good fit and has more of an offensive game than people give him credit for. He may be arriving too late to make any real difference but it’s a nice early look at a guy who we may very well target in the off-season anyway.

I mean, that would be pretty amazing.

I read this exchange and stopped to craft a mental picture of what a player worse than Baynes would look like and ...

This is a decent pick up. Not world shattering, but will be better than tank commander Baynes. Has good potential long term and already familiar with Nurse. Only thing is the tank might be affected with him in

Adding potentially the two big guys likely has a lot more to do with reducing the amount of contact in the paint some of our core guys have been forced to take this season simply due to the lack of quality at the five.

With that said, if we do go on a streak simply because we have a borderline NBA player sucking down 30MPG at the five then we have a pretty clear path to significant improvement next season.

It’s not the addition of a C+ center that makes us better, it’s the subtraction of an F- center from the lineup

The other thing this pick up does is give the front office guys and Nurse a chance to try out some things on both ends of the floor and see how they work with different personnel. It's one thing to project that having a rim-running big would help unlock Flynn's pick-and-roll game, or that having an athletic big in the dunkers spot would provide a release valve for Pascal in the post (given his improved passing), but it's another thing to be able to try it out in a game setting and see how it works.

Likewise on defence, Nurse will be able to use Birch in ways that he can't really try with Baynes, given Baynes' lack of mobility on that end.

This will help give the front office more information about the kinds of players they'll want to chase in the off-season.

Incorrect. Masai loves 2 way players and same with Nurse. That’s been our MO for a while now which is why we’ve been successful.

No hurt adding Birch even if he has zero O. Baynes is producing zeros across the board.

I week or so ago, I said it would be funny if we ended up with Birch and Olynyk......we’re halfway there.

Except it's an offensive driven league and we're one of the top worst teams as a result of a lack of offensive talent. Hasn't really worked out this year.

Hopefully Nurse experiments with a Birch/Baynes frontcourt to close out the season

Return to Toronto Raptors
