Yeah he isn't a bad rebounder though he can have his lapses at times. I honestly don't understand this offensive strategy from Billups and can't see Ayton or anyone aside from the guards in Portland being happy with the unstructured offense.

This Portland team needs a CP3 or Rubio type point guard and I don't think Brogdan is really the answer since he seems to be a score first type of guard and he doesn't seem to prefer PnR's since he waved off a few picks from DA this game.

It appears him and Scoot are slowly developing a little bit of chemistry...very slowly. But Sharpe and Grant have complete tunnel vision. Scoot can too but I think he is realizing he can't drive to the rim that much against NBA quality defenders because he gets blocked a lot. The paint is always super clogged. I don't know why Billups doesn't have them spread the floor.

Billups is a terrible coach.

Scoot rarely sees daylight on his drives and gets stuffed often.

Scoot will learn (I think). It's been 4 games. But man, the way Miller and the Thompson brothers are playing...especially Ausar....

I was gonna say tonight's Blazer/Piston matchup was going to be intriguing for all the obvious reasons - but it appears Jalen Duren has an ankle injury after landing on a defender's foot last game.

That's too bad - was curious to watch he and Ayton matched up. Duren has been an absolute animal to start the year.

Siakam has averaged 8.5 and 7.8 the last two years. Very solid for a PF.

Ayton's backup last night, Jabari Walker averages more per 36 than RWIII anyway.

Ayton is leading the NBA in rebounding. He is averaging 20 per 36. RWIII, despite playing fewer minutes, so having more energy, is averaging 8.9 per 36.

You hang your hat on 4 games when it comes to DA and in the same breath refuse evidence that Toronto has been a crappy rebounding team in that same timeframe even though the numbers show it. Games like his turds vs. top tier competition (i.e. Embiid) shhhhh don't talk about that.

Jabrari Walker isn't even a true center and dude played a whopping 15mins. I couldn't care less what his "per 36 is" which is a very manipulative stat when it comes to deep bench guys who don't get significant minutes. No man on this planet would play him over Timelord when both are healthy so what are we even talking about.

It's just funny to me how much praise this guy needs for REBOUNDING - on a team with a relatively thin front line and a bunch of chuckers bombing away. Again the guy had 4 games of > 20 boards with the Suns and 26 of > 16 boards. It didn't translate into much outside of the '21 season. Based on his talent alone he SHOULD be averaging at least 10 boards a game. Now if he persists this year with some crazy number in the upper teens I'll gladly admit his effort has gone up.

I actually would have loved to see Ayton playing with just KD and Gordon while Booker and Beal rested. That is why I wanted him as our 4th option.

He would be an upgrade over Nurkic for sure near the basket because the Nurkic is an absolute bricklayer near the rim.

Nurkic did shoot 2-5 for 3 but I really don't think he should be taking that many 3's since he's never been a volume 3pt shooter. He does have better passing but his poor defense kind of negates whatever nice passing skills he has.

I was right 5 steals is his career high and his 23 rebounds is also a career high which he had the previous game.

It's what happens when you put players in positions to succeed. Billups isn't even very good and he knows that. Probably had to with being a former PG

is that a fact? advanced stats are not that ideal for looking at defense, but looking at ESPN real box plus minus, you can see that Ayton was ranked 17th of centers in that category at 3.64, in the range of guys like Powell, Jarrett Allen, and Sengun. in comparison, Bam is 8.17, Gobert is 7.72, and Claxton is 7.37.

In terms of defensive rating, there doesn't seem to be a huge delta amongst players, so I am not sure what to make it of. On that list, Ayton ranks 10th, but behind Jokic and Vucevic?

On basketball reference, Ayton was pretty middling in both defensive win shares and defensive box plus minus. His DBPM was 0.0.

This year on the other hand, his DBPM is 2.5, although this stat is definitely wonky because Nurk leads the league in this category at 3.6. All of the metrics cited above are up for Ayton so far this season, aside from the ESPN real bpm stat because they don't have that data yet.

So yeah long story short, I don't know if he was a bad defender last year and became good, or a good defender becoming great, but this year DA has definitely focused on D so far. kind of has to anyway, since they don't give him the ball much lol. career low in uisage and FGA.

Yeah, even before the last game, I noticed active hands in passing lanes and a lot of deflected passes/shots. Even before that game he had a number of steals and deflections.

Ayton was not a good defender last year, especially with advanced stats. However, most of the real plus minus, RAPTOR and stuff are based on who you are on the floor with, and he played a lot more with 2nd and 3rd stringers than the rest of our players outside of maybe Bridges...and then when healthy he always starts/sits when opposition starters do, while Bridges/Book, etc, would play against benches often. So you have to take all that stuff into context.

But we know he has the ability to be very solid defensively and switch, stay with guys unless they are really quick, guard the perimeter, etc, which few Cs can do.
