Difference is JV & Ross were both projected lottery picks still... The "Greek Freek" was on the draft boards & described as a sleeper pick... Bruno was nowhere to be found anywhere... This is in effect 1999 M.Ginobli (#57) & choosing him #20 in a deep draft, & hoping he can be as good as M.Ginobli... As I said in another post I trust Masai because his rise has been in the scouting ranks but this an extremely ballsy move...

Yeah I'm guessing he'll get his a$$ kicked in the summer league and the expectations will come back down. Like Fran Fraschilla said, he's 2 years away from being 2 years away.

no one knows ****. He could be hot in the summer league, suck come season time. He could blow up immediately finding a role in our system. Who da faqu knows. Sit back and enjoy. A 20th pick is not this team's main focus.

I'm pretty sure Fraschilla's never seen him play in person. At least that's what I gather from this interview, in which he implies that he's only spoken to friends about him. I'm not opposing his statement, just saying that his expertise in this specific case, aside from word of mouth and the small amount of footage available, sounds limited.

I thought it was pretty obvious that he was making stuff up as he went along, you can tell by how much he stuttered.

I disagree... Are we forgetting we drafted Mo Peterson at #21, in not as deep as a draft & he was contributing in less then 2-3 years (Masai said he was a long way away, so this year is unlikely)... Before the draft we were all talking at how we could potentially get 2 players with #20 & #37 because of it's depth & now we have succumb to hey it's only the #20 pick might as well take a risk on a virtual unknown...

People need to remember "The Greek Freak" isn't even all that good yet? He scored 7 points a game in 24 mins on a 15 win Milwaukee team... We can't give up 24 mins a night on a project to get 6-7 points in production while trying to maintain our playoff status... How do we develop this guy?

The must have a program in place for the kid to begin his development. It's going to be a process but he's 18 years old so he's gonna need time regardless. How much time he gets is going to be based on how quick his learns our system and how much Casey trusts him. Again I've already seen some ignorant post from people who are still mad over the pick because their player wasn't chosen. I myself was dumbfounded when Bruno's name was called by Silver. It was out of left field and it took everyone by surprise but I wasn't mad over it because how can I judge the kid until I see him play and develop. Plus we knew going in that Masai wasn't going to take someone who was ready right now he said he was fine taking a project. A reason why we didn't bother with Napier.

I hear you, it's just extremely tough to believe in this day and age that someone like this can float that far below the radar & actually believe he can be something. Masai comes from scouting so I trust his eyes but man takes a lot of Ego/Confidence to do this type of move... I don't like the idea of starting the clock on his contract right away but I understand the need to have him develop in our system with our coaching. I just don't know how with where we currently are in the standings. This is why we need our own D-League team so we can control all aspects of our development players, then I might not mind this pick as much.

Didn't know much about him - did some research. Guys, he passes the eye test with flying colours... He's 18, he will probably end up being a defensive beast. His laterals for his size are insane... His reach is insane, his general coordination for his size is insane.

Offensively... Go back to that scouting report. His shot is quick for his size, and he doesn't hesitate. When he does, he doesn't go crazy with the fakes. His movement on both ends of the floor tells me he has a natural feel for the game and positioning. His passing ability seems pretty good too.

I'm very excited about this kid. I think he will prove most of you guys very very wrong. I can see him being a top 5 player from this draft class, if he reached his potential. He apparently works exceptionally hard (like DD), so that's a major major plus too.

Trust Masai. He knows what he is doing...

I don't think he was that below the radar. When they had basketball without borders in Argentina he was the MVP of the tournament and there were several people who represented NBA teams down there. So they must have seen this kid before. What Masai and his staff did was try to hide him as best as possible and more then likely used Bruno's agent to create a fog around the kid. It was a smart move to give Masai a chance to nab him. But other teams did get wind of Bruno. Now in terms of NBAdraft.net, Draftexpress, Chad Ford ya he was under the radar from media side of things, mainly because they don't have the resources to go all over the world to scout talent.

I find it interesting you're more trusting of Fran Fraschilla (a former coach with no history of scouting) than the former professional scout in Masai and his staff of scouts. Purely curious, why is that?

Yes, they both agree he's raw and has a lot of growth to do, but I don't think Masai believes he's 4+ years away from being able to step on an NBA court.

Actually...this is the situation Joel Embiid was in. Had Luc Richard Mbah a Moute not spoken highly of him, he likely would have remained undiscovered. And look at his level of talent and where he is now.

But what you said is kind of the caveat with media exposure. We assume that if it doesn't exist for a player, then they aren't good enough to make the big time, simply because of just how pervasive it is in human culture. If they're good enough, they'd have been found already, right?

But that doesn't immediately mean that lack of exposure = lack of talent. Many places in the world still don't have adequate media coverage and infrastructure of talent development for basketball. That's how the media get wind of these prospects - scouts go and see them and are impressed, and pass their reports onto various media outlets.

The one thing that keeps me from going absolutely ape **** on this pick is because Masai's career rise has been through scouting so I hold on to hope but Masai was on Tim & Sid today said Fran stole his line "2 yrs away from being 2 yrs away" meaning he agrees with that assessment. Matter of fact Masai went further as to say that Jeff Weltman's dad was the first to use that line in describing Bruno... Kid is a major project that could yield dividends in the future but also has bust potential factor 7 written all over him as well... Any fan thinking we are going to see something special this year or next from this kid is crazy & they need to temper their expectations when he looks like crap in summer league... We drafted a physical specimen, that's it... I'm sure we will see some flashes of potential greatness but to think he will be able to come in & contribute to a 48 win playoff team right now is asking for a let down...

He's from Sao Paulo, Brazil less then 200km from Rio... One of the fastest growing economies in the world... A country that has hosted the Olympics/World Cup & until recently had more players in the NBA & better showings in international play... I've seen players in the Top 100 come from more obscure places & worse infrastructure then where Bruno derives...

As for the Embiid comparison the difference is he was found prior to being drafted by a top ranked NCAA school & showed his worth against top collegiate competition while playing in front of 20,000 fans, handling the media, learning the language & culture...

Bruno plays in front of less people then a Canadian University Game, against horrible competition, supposedly doesn't speak any English, only has 5 yrs of actually playing the game & looks it from the video... He is one of hell of a physical specimen but these are a lot of question marks & experience to overcome when rating his bust potential vs his upside...

Masai actually said the "two years away from being two years away" quote himself on the Tim & Sid interview. In fact he said two years away from being ten years away.

The guy averaged 4.9 PPG in the Brazilian league...

and how likely is it that Fran even scouted him? I mean, seriously? He might have seen some grainy footage, but he didn't go to see him multiple times like Masai and our scouts did.

If he said 2 years away from being 10 years away, you realize he was joking...right? He didn't draft a player who might be able to contribute when he is 31.

Masai actually said the "two years away from being two years away" quote himself on the Tim & Sid interview. In fact he said two years away from being ten years away.

The guy averaged 4.9 PPG in the Brazilian league...

If he said 2 years away from being 10 years away, you realize he was joking...right? He didn't draft a player who might be able to contribute when he is 31.

Yeah I'm aware, thanks.

The point is he is very fricken raw.

I think right now Giannis might be the most overrated player in the league. Could be good, but as you said, he scored 7 a game on a very bad team that fed him minutes. I remember late in the season, when people on this board were trying to figure out how many wins we would end up with, more than one poster saying we would lose to the Bucks, and that Giannis scared them. I had to do a quadruple take when I looked at his numbers. 7 points, 4 rebounds. That was going to derail the end of our season?

I think at a certain point, hype takes over, and people just parrot what they read on ESPN. maybe Giannis becomes a star, maybe he is Anthony Randolph 2.0, another player who was so great according to the media, but never actually became any good.

Eh, almost every 18 year old is raw, certainly by NBA standards. And honestly, I said it a bunch leading up to the draft, we are not getting a guy at 20 who is going to play more than 10-15 minutes a game most likely, especially on our team that is trying to make a run at the playoffs. So this isn't really a bad idea, go for ultimate potential, someone who at least has a chance at being special.
