We received one.Ferry didn't use it that season. I stand corrected.

I think you apply for it if a player is deemed to be out for the season. I am unsure how the value is calculated.

The Atlanta Hawks have been granted a Disabled Player Exception worth $5.25 million per a report by Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Hawks received the exception due to the loss of Al Horford for the remainder of the season.

The exception can be used in trades or for signing a free agent. This would give the team a little more wiggle room with the salary cap to sign a free agent or to pursue a trade due to the loss of a player.
Peachtree Hoops - 2014

The Los Angeles Clippers have traded veteran forward Antawn Jamison to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks, who are ravaged by injuries and are on a seven-game losing streak, made the deal using a disabled player exception they got when they lost Al Horford for the season because of a shoulder injury.

The Hawks did get a DPE for Al. There isn't a requirement to use it, it's just nice to have one if you do.

This young man has emerged as one of the best two-way SGs in the league.

When Hayward's foot spun around like a top, most of us thought it was ovah for him. After some light research, we all kinda realized it looked bad but wasn't quite as severe career-wise. Further it was stated that, if it had been a knee dislocation, amputation was a potential outcome.

Sadly, that looks to be the case for the Bears' TE after a pretty gruesome knee dislocation this weekend ...

Thoughts and prayers are with the guy.

I believe the player has to miss a certain percentage of games in the year. By receiving this exception, IIUC, Hayward has to miss x-amount of games and the DPE can only be traded for a guy on an expiring contract (if they decide to trade it).

Maybe Al had already played too many games or maybe it's a new thing with the latest CBA? Or maybe they didn't want to lock him out of being able to return that year?

Player has to be out for the rest of the season - no chance for a return. It's calculated as 50% of player's salary or the MLE whichever is less.

It's not quite "no chance of return", there's a bit more wiggle room with lawyer speak of "substantially more likely to not return" which is a determination made at the time of the application. Those pesky lawyers however try to close that loophole by having the DPE go poof should the player miraculously return after the exception has already been awarded but it's not like going on IR in football where that player is automatically excluded from the rest of the season even if Jesus H. Christ happens to heal thine self.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... let's get to the real issue which is why the Knicks have turned it around (a bit) early. Guess who's their starting point guard during this recent resurgence .... Jarrett. Bartholomew. Jack. boom

ETA: What does the jacket have to do to get you to eat some crow, jayu? He's a good player and, more importantly, is a marvel at facilitating the development of young teammates.

Dangit! I was about to post an inquiry about Whozonga in the trade ideas thread. Wondering if we can snag him for cheap just for developmental purposes.

Seems they were sniffing around something called Malachi Richardson (aka Exhibit 4502.45b for why you never let NCAA/late-season performances trump months of 'meh' tape to force you to waste a 1st on a guy). Do we have a mediocre, failed draft pick to dangle in front of ORL? Where's KJ McDaniel when you need him?

Lastly, if Whozonga were paired with Jarrett. B. Jack, he'd be an all-star by now. 8-)

Also wonder if Looney would be someone we target considering GS decided not to pick up his option (for cap reasons apparently). Not that he's (a) been healthy or (b)really shown anything on the court for 3 years. Other than that ....

I'd love to get a shot at this kid. (Wish we could have added him to that veteran squad with Korver/Millsap/Horford)
But he could really thrive in the right situation.

Scouting report heading into the draft:
Standing 6-8, he has ideal size for the wing position ... Has a solid structure and high level athleticism even by NBA standards ... He combines good size with amazing body control, athleticism and leaping abilities, showing a quick first step and explosiveness ... Offensively he’s a solid shooter, with an improved shooting form, a quick release and unlimited range, even far away behind the three point line ... His offensive repertoire includes spot up shots from the corners, pull-up jumpers or finishing by attacking the rim, where he's able to fully utilize his athleticism ... He’s an underrated passer whowing the ability to find teamates with solid court vision and basketball IQ ...

He lacks a solid mid-range game, which is the area where he struggles the most ... His off the ball defense is not effective enough, since he lacks focus and positioning, furthermore he tends to be too aggressive in the closeouts leading to useless fouls ... He has worked a lot on his temper, but his fiery nature and cocky attitude is still his trademark, and can get him in trouble at times ...

I THINK WHAT WE'RE SEEING WITH ALL THESE FIRST ROUNDERS (AND LOTTERY SELECTIONS) NOT HAVING THEIR OPTIONS picked up is a testament to how unprepared these kids were coming into the league.

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/247926/Video-Lottery-Picks-With-Declined-Rookie-Scale-Options

18 lottery picks since 2008 have had their rookie options declined. Of those 18:

2 were Seniors: Jimmer Fredette, Terrence Williams.

7 were Juniors: Thomas Robinson, Wesley Johnson, Cole Aldrich, Hasheem Thabeet, Jordan Hill, Earl Clark, Joe Alexander.

3 were Sophomores: Kendall Marshall, Al-Farouq Aminu, Jonny Flynn.

4 were Freshmen: Jahlil Okafor, Anthony Bennet, Austin Rivers, Xavier Henry.

2 were Euros: Jan Vesely, Mario Hezonja.

Of the 9 Seniors and Juniors, 2 are still on NBA rosters. Of the 7 Sophomores and Freshmen 3* are still on NBA rosters. If you sort the list by age, 11 of the lottery players whose rookie options were declined were the age of 21 and above during their first year in the league.

Using rookie options being declined is not a good argument for players staying in school or entering the league at an older age.

*Jahlil Okafor is still on the Sixers for now.

So 9 years worth of lottery pick for 126 total players for a whopping 14% over 9 years. 3% Freshmen.
