Re: Official Summer 2024 Magic Free Agency and Trade Ideas Thread 3.0
POR has around $180m in salaries next year...way above the cap (including 2 lottery pick slots)...and they're terrible. Small market, bad team, poorly assembled in the inverse to ours (all guards and then a mediocre frontcourt with 2 very large vet salaries). Let's help them out of cap hell, so they can really get moving on their rebuild...clinging to Simons while Shaedon and Scoot are the future makes no sense...they should cash in AND get off his salary. I'm sure they value him, but he'll be ready for a bigger new deal (due to inflated tank numbers) right when Sharpe and Scoot are ready to take his minutes and role....
1. Let Harris, Fultz, Okeke, Goga walk
2. Trade DEN 25 frp, ORL 26 frp (top 5), Cole Anthony, Jett Howard, Joe Ingles to POR for Simons, Rob Williams, & Brogdon
-POR hopes Cole can fill Simons' role (enough) for half the money...Jett might be an offensive star. Mostly tons of cap/tax savings
-ORL weaponizes their short-term cap space for a big one-year deal, a middling 2 years of an injured big, and Simons
....if Time Lord is healthy, ORL's defense gets even better - play him very limited minutes like we did with Isaac and see.
the expectation is that he's dead salary and taking him is a big savings to POR and not a big deal for ORL. If he comes
around, Weltman is Exec of the Year and Mose has another eraser to play with. If not, just money - we're still better.
...Brogdon can still really play and it's just one year - he'll be off the books when first rookie extensions kick in
...Simons drops right in to the starting backcourt and lights it up...maybe best fit of anyone in the league.
Isaac,Time Lord (?), M. Wagner
Paolo, WCJ, M. Wagner
Franz, Black, Houstan (24 frp?)
Suggs, Brogdon, Houstan
Simons, Black, Brogdon
(so many combos as just about everyone is multi-positional...much better shooting and guard play, much deeper defensively). AB, in particular, can get quality minutes at point forward (where Ingles plays now) due to his size and ability to defend up. He'd be able to play with more prolific scorers in Brogdon & Simons, to balance his skillset while he continues to grow. Having WCJ backing up 4/5 would be tremendous...and pairing him (or Mo) with Isaac and/or Williams is another nice balance to let WCJ do his thing offensively.
*Not sure of value...I figure Simons is at least 2 frps, Brogdon is 1, TimeLord negative value...how much value to getting them out of the tax. Maybe need to add another frp or (happily) a handful of srps?

We're going to add all those injury prone players and continue to complain about the team never being healthy? Pass on all that. Sign Monk without giving up any assets.

Lonzo could opt out next season, and he's cleared to do advanced basketball stuff now.

No thanks to Ball.
Also, can we stop throwing out names that make no sense in terms of realistic targets. Might as well throw Jokic and Luka into possibilities while we are at it.
The splashiest this organization will get is giving Fultz a 2 year extension and signing Malik Monk to an ungodly amount of money until he retires.

I guess you're missing the point I tried to make that Time Lord (who is an awesome defensive player and locker room guy) is a complete wash. POR's financial situation is unusual for a team so obviously in a rebuild. Most bottomed-out teams can afford to pay a non-player with potential to blossom (like we did with Fultz). So, we take Williams off their hands, he never plays a second and he's off the books right as Franz and Suggs' extensions kick in...BUT-if he gets healthy, it's on. He's the kind of guy (like Isaac) that can tip the scales in a tough playoff series, even in limited but impactful minutes. If we're getting to keep a pick out of the offer just for wasting cap space on Williams - so be it.
I'd say Monk is to Simons about the same as Simons is to Booker...similar style of players on different levels.
I'd be thrilled to get Monk, Grayson Allen or Brogdon...but they should be aiming higher, this is a uniquely powerful position we are in this summer.

I'll be broken record. A lot of these ideas, trades, threads, player analysis is interesting and at least I am learning a lot.
Yet, I feel like I am in Babylon 500 BC and there is a giant hand writing on the wall "We play defense". Yet I think me you and eyriq are the only ones reading it.
So i'm not saying that 100% we wont sign a guard. I am saying that its more likely we sign a defensive center and quadruple down on defense while resigning Fultz+Harris to their final nba contracts.
It doesn't matter if the talent pool to sign is better. We have put all this emphasis on chemistry and suddenly 1 potential playoff year and we blow up the people that got you there isn't a risk I see the org taking.

My point is i dont want Williams eating up our capspace for 2 years. I like his game but we just cant afford to have this many injury prone players (Brogdon included). We could use our cap space for a player than is actually healthy and can play.
I dont agree at all with Simons being much better than Monk. I think they're more or less equal with Monk being a better passer and defender. Simons just plays more minutes on a much worse team. I also dont think Simons is worth more than one decent 1st round pick.

Question to all the Simmons and Monk fans out there.
What makes you feel that both are so available / attainable / and retainable?

Monk is an UFA and the Kings are limited in what they can offer him. Max they can do is 4yr and like 20 mill/yr.

The only thing that I can think of that accounts for his/her irrational love for Simons is that that Simons is actually Skybox's son-in-law.
To give up players on a rookie contract and 1sts for Simons is obscene. Last I checked a couple of weeks ago, the Blazers actually had a better record without Simons than with him. That dude does not move the needle at all.
Russell would be a cheaper, better option than either Monk or Simons.

Might be crazy but when DLo opts out and I 100% think he will because he knows he's the ONLY big salary they have that's expendable for a STAR.
I'd throw a BIGGER 2 +1 year deal at him and let him run it with Paolo Franz Suggs. He fits with both Suggs & Black and this would allow Cole to be moved with our 1st round pick for a solid backup 3/4. Backup 2/3 could be a rotation of Black/Howard/Jett
DLo/Black
Suggs/Howard Houstan/Jett
Franz/Jett/Howard Houstan
Paolo/Isaac/ FA
WCJ/ Wagner

I like Lonzo , or at least version of Lonzo that we last saw. But having him and Suggs and Isaac on a team and hoping for anything but years of frustration due injuries ... yea... No tnx.
Odds of bringing all 3 together healthy for some playoff run are near zero.

I dont remember similar case - drafting someone in the lottery and then playing them less than 50 minutes for the season. So what is the precedent here? What tells you Jett is going to get signifcant playing time in the future? It may happen of course, but nothing points towards it so far. So for now, lets accept this was a mistake, mistakes do happen and let's stop talking about him and just move on.
In this context it would imply that Jett going to the G-League was always the plan.
49 minutes for a season man, there are 60!! rookise this year that have played more than him. If this was always the plan, it's a plan nobody else is implementing. You know the occam's razor? The management screwed up, they picked the wrong guy, this is the most simple explanation, it happens all the time, lets stop counting on Jett till proven otherwise.

Healthy Lonzo Ball would be such a great fit, but he's just too injury prone. I am rooting for him to make a comeback but wouldnt want him on the team.
As for D-Lo. I think he's a solid player, but i dont think he's a good locker room presence. I'd still take Monk over him.

DLo/Black
Suggs/Howard/Jett
Franz/Jett/Howard
Paolo/Isaac/ FA
WCJ/ Wagner
I am not sure if Jett and Howard can co-exist together.
**** Houstan rofl, that's what I get for going fast
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

I think the Jett situation has to be a growth season for him. Yes, he has been bouncing back and forth in the G League. But that has to be one of the things he had to learn how to handle to grow both as a basketball player and a person. It has to be a learning situation for him. I have high hopes for him. Hope he prove all y’all wrong! Haha
