Kind of wonder if theres some off field stuff with this one. Noticed he was buried on the depth chart and thought something might be up.

Knee issues maybe? He's been on a slow decline since his surgery. Then again, he looked completely lost on defense, Saturday. A position change probably did him no favors.

On a related note, I'm still not all that impressed with Ty Summers yet, so Martin's fall is still a surprise to me

I'm surprised they cut bait so quickly. He looked really good in TC last season before getting hurt. Switching him to a new position with a new DC put him in a bad spot.

Martin now joins a long line of "illustrious" players to FORMERLY man the middle of the defense for the Packers over the past decade, players such as Christian Kirksey, BJ Goodson, Antonio Morrison, Jake Ryan, Nate Palmer, Sam Barrington, Jamari Lattimore, DJ Smith, Brad Jones, and of course the immortal AJ Hawk (I'm sure there must have been another JAG or 2 who started and played poorly in the soft underbelly of the Pack's D since 2010).

Blake Martinez gets some love for being the best of this motley crew.

Burks and Summers are sure to join this list sometime within the next year or two.

Hard to believe the Pack has not had more success on D with all that talent at inside linebacker since 2011.

I'm very disappointed we are cutting Martin. We have to draft a MLB early next year because this bargain basement stuff isn't working.

Of course we will have tons of holes next year thanks to the cap, so I'm not sure that will be possible.

Good news is we'll probably have a nice selection of picks.

Lol at the notion the pack would spend a premium pick on a ILB. They simply do not value the position and they aren't alone or nessesarily wrong. I think they are pretty comfortable with Barnes as the main guy.. who by the way graded out much higher than 1st round ILB Queen last season.

My personal take is it's a lot like RB where the truly special guys matter and you don't want to suck at the position but with most guys like RBs the line in front of them matters more. I do believe it's the least important position on a defense.

I feel pretty good about Barnes and Campbell. The backups, not so much.

There are analytical models which state that ILBs are the least valuable position on a defense. The Packers clearly buy into that notion, because they've invested nothing in that position over the last 15 years.

Took AJ Hawk 5th, got a decent but mostly meh player and said never again :)

The most common misconception I see with ILBs is thinking you need 2 impact guys.. in today's NFL in a 3/4 the second ILB plays about as much or even less than a dime CB.

We took an RB in the 2nd round last year - clearly analytics weren't considered then.

How many elites defenses over the years had an elite ILB?

I mean every gm in the league has at least one or two positional groups they choose not to really invest in because they think they can make due in other areas and it's impossible to invest heavily into every position group on the team.

Yes they've decided to invest in RB in recent years and whether that's a good idea or whether they'd be better served to have used that capital elsewhere is open for debate. It would seem though that this offense is RB heavy which is why they've chosen to do it.

The better question for people to ask regarding ILB would be would you have rather had them invest heavily in ILB or the secondary and/or OLB and even with or without those two groups invested in I'd still argue DL should still be prioritized over ILB.

Point that I'm making is though that you have to pick and choose where to invest and then after that hope you find possible stop gaps at the lesser valued groups.
