If DSJ had more value than Frank, then they wouldn't have to attach an expiring contract, and take back a bad contract from us. They have to attach an asset to get rid of him.
THJ is on a reasonable deal. Dallas is trying to win with Luka since they dont have a pick this year. Luka is a point forward so THJ and Frank can finish plays. THJ at this point is a better player than Matthews.
The trade is THJ and Frank for DSJ and salary filler.
THJ is not a reasonable deal at all. Nobody wants to touch that with a 10 foot pole. Dallas also isn't under pressure to win RIGHT NOW with Luka, since this is just his first year. They are attaching Wes Matthews because the Knicks are forcing a salary dump on the Mavs, and Matthews is an expiring deal. Dallas is also a team that like to recruit free agents, and taking back THJ would severely impede them. But they have to in order to dump DSJ, and try to get some value for him, before he loses all value, and they renounce his rights. Right now DSJ is headed towards Mudiay territory, where he's gonna be dumped for 2nd rounders, if they keep him for another year.
Knicks
Frank - asset
Timmy - liability
Mavs
DSJ - liability
Matthews - asset
If they called up and said DSJ for Frank straight up, the Knicks are the ones saying no.
You obviously don't watch Mavs games. Mavs have had cap space before and gotten no one. Dallas is not a free agent destination.
Matthew's is expiring. Barnes has a player option. Not saying Barnes opts out but he might want to actually start instead of being Luka's backup. So you think Klay Thompson is going to Dallas? I'm pretty sure Dallas prefers THJ to paying Middleton 25+ million. That's assuming they could get any one to sign there.
You also fail to realize some guys will not sign to a team to play second fiddle to Luka who is going to dominate the ball. This is the same reason LA couldn't get anyone.
There are multiple reasons for Dallas to make this trade to provide some backcourt stability going into next year.

I love Frank, but I am not against this deal if we are flipping Smith to Pheonix or Orlando. Also don't hate it if we get rid of all our contracts. For instance:
NY trades Ntilikina and THJ to Dallas, and Lee and Thomas to Orlando
Dallas trades Mathews to NY and Smith Jr to Orlando
Orlando trades Ross and Vucevic to NY
NY follows with a Kanter for Parker trade.
NY then gives Parker, Ross and Vucevic all a shot and has money for a decent FA run, plus space for the youngins to develop.

Ok...
1.....so the Mudiay era?
Over?
2. We don’t love Ja. Rastafari.
3. Lee could stay? Or does he go too?
3.1. Is Dot the Lee sweetener?
4. Kanter. Same time.

Last year around this time there were a lotta rumors flying....and not one trade discussed happened. If I’m wrong please tell me.
That behemoth Cleveland, LA, Sacto, Utah...well yunno, the “Shump goes to Sacto” blockbuster, nobody saw coming.
Sounds like DSJ is being traded for sure in the next day or so tho.

$49.4 million cap + Zion? No brainer.
$52 million + the 5 pick? Lots of options.
I could see the FO going all-in on vets by trading Knox and the '19 pick and maybe even Porzingis if they can wiggle this into enough cap room fo Durant/Kyrie + a trade for AD or Lillard.
Spoiler:

I haven't seen this rumor anywhere else. It certainly revealed how a lot of people here are already getting impatient already over this rebuild and their delusion about getting KD or Kawhi.

pretty wild statements in this thread, wild like
1. dallas selling high -- no they're not, they're trading a guy that can't run an offense.
2. dsj can run an nba offense -- no he can't.
dsj was a quitter in college and he is a quitter in the nba, and that's why they're getting rid of that loser.

From everything that's happening this baseball off-season the one thing I've learned is to never trust a Twitter checkmark, it means nothing.

Yeah, and it should be said Perry is still cleaning up past mistakes including those of Mills. Much as I have turned on Fiz (who probably will still be a lousy play calling coach even with a strong team), much of this season is transitioning from the past into the present. Now that the trades for the crappy vets happen (or don't), it should be greenlit to play the youngest ones the rest of this season. IOW, this season was going to be messy no matter what. It really is a process year if there ever was one for the Knicks. Some guys just want instant pudding though; KD jumping out of their birthday cakes and somehow that will = voila! a ring appears! Nah

Meh. I like Frank but this ain’t a tipping point deal IMO. There are a few levels that this makes sense on.
it's less about trading frank and more about trading a loser of a player that the knicks always seem to end up with on their roster.
