This has been an interesting stretch. Some of these other teams are winning games that you'd expect they would lose. So despite the Mavs crawling for that coveted dream of being destroyed by the Warriors... some of these teams are still keeping them right there near the bottom. It's beyond frustrating to see how bad the 8th seed is this year though.

As a reference, last year, January 24, this was the 8th seed: Houston Rockets (24-22)

I watched some footage of Ntilikina and I'm intrigued.

Kid uses his length and is aggressive in defense. Has his head up when attacking and setting up his teammates. Solid footwork and great handles. Lots of flaws but also lots of potential. The PG skills and the physical tools (minus the build) are definitely there.

Someone else look into this kid.

Just please tell me this isn't the second coming of Roddy B. We wasted way too many years on that guy.

Well honestly, he could very well be, but he could also achieve what Roddy B could not.

I mean if we look at Roddy B for example, his woes were 1) injuries (which we couldn't predict); 2) psychological/mental; 3) horrible defensive BBIQ (maybe lack of interest in playing defense?) and maybe BBIQ in general.

His weaknesses were due to things we couldn't predict or were hard to predict. Lots of players have all the tools physically but have terrible BBIQs, lack self-driven motivation to improve, personality issues, injuries, etc. Lots of things could go wrong really.

What I do see is, Ntilikina is also skinny but has the frame and wingspan. How he builds from that and what comes out of it is a mental and DNA issue, nothing you can do except not draft him. He does have solid to great BBIQ in both ends of the floor. How he develops that depends on how much he wants to work on his game, his personality, the lifestyle he develops, etc. He stepped up his shooting apparently playing U-18 and in the title game made 7 rainbows from struggling in a league wherein he was a young kid against pros. That shows some willingness to improve...or that he just isn't NBA ready yet and can only beast on equal or inferior talents.

I could be totally wrong on Roddy B or my evaluation on Ntilikina, so hell. But I'm not expecting us to draft in the top 5 so I have to at least look at our prospects outside of it. Look at his game and tell us what you think man.

I would be happy with any of Smith, Fultz, or Ball... Did anyone see Smith last night? Good Lord.

The kid is a born scorer.. He reminds me of an Allen Iverson/Steve Francis type player, which would be awesome

Ntilinka has actual PG skills and vision, along with SG size. Plus, he isn't made of Faberge eggs.

That's good to know as Roddy was about as worthless as a steering wheel on a mule.

What are you guys preference to next year draft?

To me, if we land a top 4 pick, I'will pick
1. Markelle Fultz 6-4 PG
2. Josh Jackson 6-8 SG/SF
3. Dennis Smith 6-2 PG (may trade him to Sixers for their lottery pick, De'Aaron Fox, and right to Nerlens Noel)
4. Lonzo Ball 6-6 PG (will definitely trade him to Sixers for their lottery pick, De'Aaron Fox, and right to Nerlens Noel)

If we land a pick beyond the 4th one, I will trade him for proven veteran who's at 26-27 yo available:
1. Wes Matthews / Dwight Powell with the pick to Chicago for Jimmer Butler
2. Wes Matthews / Dwight Powell with the pick to Pistons for Andre Drummond
3. Wes Matthews / Dwight Powell with the pick to Chicago for DeMarcus Cousins

As for the second round pick, I'will pick a big or an energy guy (preferably at frontcourt).

Our draft may depend quite a bit on whether Carlisle returns. He's not going to be patient through a "point guard rebuild" (think Westbrook to OKC, Lillard to Portland). As long as he's coach, I can't see us accommodating a young, ball-dominant guard in the rotation. I think that rules out Dennis Smith.

If we draft a point guard (as we should imo), he'll probably be someone who can play off the ball until he can earn RC's trust. An efficient, low-turnover guy is best. Not sure whether Fultz or Ball fit that profile, or which does best.

Ntilikina wouldn't be a rotation guy off the bat, but he could have the highest ceiling as an RC point guard. The Beaubois comparison means nothing to me... Ntilikina actually has modern NBA size and is 2 or 3 years younger than Roddy was coming out of Europe. Plus he seems to be the highest regarded Euro guard prospect in years, even more than Giannis.

Jonathan Isaacs is a possible route if we choose not to go guard. "Combo forward" usually refers to tweeners (think Anthony Bennett *shudders*). But Isaacs has the size of a 4 with the athleticism of a 3 (think Kevin Durant, body-wise at least). A 4 who can guard all 5 positions has to be tantalizing for Carlisle.

Doubt Josh Jackson is on our radar considering his falling stock and how loaded our team is with wings. Drafting BPA regardless of position isn't smart (see: Philadelphia).

Last PG, I think we'd be looking at is Fox. Seems to have a polished PG game (possibly a good fit even) and good defense but lower offensive ceiling.

If not a point guard, I really like Josh Jackson. But I read that Dallas is infatuated with Frank Ntilikina.

Yeah, I would like to know the source on that. Not that I would mind. I like Ntilinka a lot, and it would fit my trade down if end they up outside of the top 4 plan.

Chad Ford (ESPN Insider) reported sources hearing that, and that Ntilikina's the Mavs' top ranked guy after Fultz and Ball (not sure which of the two is first).

The last time we had a Euro guard this highly regarded was 2013, when Schroeder and Giannis were on the board, two guys I recall the Mavs having on their radar. And Ntilikina is more hyped than both of them.

I have read it on several 3rd party sites now.

Is anyone else concerned, that Dallas is really starting to win games now?

Is anyone interested in Isaiah Hartenstein, the German/American 7 footer born in 1998 the same year we drafted Dirk? Hartenstein needs to work with Holger some but seems to be really skilled. I wouldn't pick him top ten but if Dallas makes the playoffs and falls to mid draft maybe it's worth rolling the dice on a Dirk replacement?

I like what I have seen of him, but like you said, not in the top ten. There are some interesting bigs in this draft, but they are all long term project types. I don't think any of them step in and help out right away, but I don't think anyone outside of the top 3-4 can do that.
