It doesn't mean a caloric deficit at all, particularly not in the context of performance training. Barnes' cardio would likely be focused on improving stamina and endurance for high intensity intervals.

HiJiNX wrote:As for Scottie in the pnr, there are clearly large deficits there. But he’s also young and developing. His intelligence says that he will excel in that action one he gets that midrange jumper and a handle that can squeeze between defenders in the paint. The first imo is more likely than the second but there is a way forward.

Our beloved Derozan was once awful in the pnr as well but he’s become pretty lethal in screening actions as his midrange and handle have developed.

What's clearly key to everything is stop looking at Barnes as a traditional PG. He's a 6-8 guy who uses his body size more than he uses his jumper and he can move better than most bigs with the ball. He's not Jason Kidd and he's not Sabonis, but he has some attributes of both types of archetype. The more Jason Kidd skills he develops into his 6-8 240lbs frame the better as that will allow him to play more like Giannis and Lebron than a traditional guard.

The whole sitting back on Barnes thing won't work because he will use the 240lbs to bounce guys off him even when they play back. It's in the videos Samson Folk put up in his analysis lol. Also Samson Folk even showed how he would use the pick and roll effectively even without jumper. Reject the screens and be agressive going downhill even if it's more of the Andre Miller back down player type of getting to the basket. That works better for him. Also, if you do not play back, he will kill you with his passing. Everything Samson Folk showed in the videos actually shows an easy way for him to be effective in the pick and roll. The Raptors just haven't exploited it enough yet since they had the FVV and Siakam two man game.

Personally I do prefer a PG like Schroeder playing with him but with Barnes controlling the play more.

Carry on

Of course you can have a surplus of calories while prioritizing conditioning. Cardio is about weight loss, you're eliciting metabolic adaptations. The body uses O2 more efficiently, angiogenesis, increasing O2 carrying capacity, etc.

I think 9lbs of muscle is a stretch but you can improve both capacities simultaneously. Strength and conditioning is not bodybuilding

Barnes has tree trunks for legs, big shoulders, a wide chest and big arms. This is how his weight is naturally distributed. He’s also 6’8 (or maybe even taller now). He’s also young and still filling out. 9 lbs isn’t so far fetched when you consider all these factors.

Not to mention that cardio doesn’t really burn a lot of calories.

I need to modify my post. I meant to say cardio isn't about weight loss.

Your right tho. With his frame and a professional training regimen 9lbs may not be a huge stretch in 5 months. He's young too. His body can handle more rigorous training demands.

Just in comparing to my training it seems absurd. I put on maybe 5-6lbs the past year. But again, I'm without professional help and it's not my job.

This is not a surprise since he doesn’t have much of a face up game right now. His only go to move is a right handed baby hook. I call him the right handed Thad young.

I always laugh at people who take this .5 second talk from darko seriously. Defenses will just switch against this team like they have been in the past 2 seasons and everything will be an isolation.

We have 2 guys with clear strength advantage against more than half the league, let them switch

What's important is we don't waste 15 seconds of the offense with telegraphed dribble hand offs with the big 30 feet from the basket not even looking to score, that's how they switched last year versus purposeful actions we should expect this year

every team has to iso. i think we are going to structure our offense a bit like miami.

no pure pg - alot of movement and hope to catch defenses sleeping a bit on cuts - but there's also plenty of jimmy and bam iso's in that offense.

the heat play a style where they play defense and stay in the game by generating easy buckets to overcome their lack of high level offensive talent - then they hope they have enough scoring to win at the end. alot of that is jimmy butler.

we're probably going to have a similar season where we'll be in alot of close games. then we'll need 1 or 2 guys to step up in the final minutes to push us over the edge.

I will not miss the constant dribble handoffs leaving us with 12 seconds on the shot clock to have one shot at a look.

Cardiovascular means relating to the heart and blood vessels.

So in the context of training its about doing more "work" (be it running, weight lifting, etc) with less stress on the heart (less pumps to achieve the same work/load goal) thereby increasing stamina/endurance

People hear cardio and think oh its weight loss running lol

You still have to have shooters to execute a heat style offense. They were awful in the regular season offensively due to all their shooters slumping.

The only thing this team should rely on is their defense. They have good defensive talent and let’s see if they can put that together.

Give me Barnes at 33% and Siakam at 36% from 3 and we are a playoff team.

Looks like there's a slight tweak in his shot, mainly the follow through.

Meanwhile everyone out there was saying he needs to grow up, and working with selfish dickbags shouldn't impact your mood lol.

It's crazy how people could just put on the horse blinders seeing how selfish some players were last year.

I will be beyond thrilled if he can put together a competent shooting season in 23-24. That would be lovely, and a major step forward for him in becoming a relevant offensive player. He certainly has the physical tools.
