I always wonder how people decide civil vs criminal.

If theyre just after his money=civil. If they actually want him to face justice for what he’s done=criminal. Now if you’re asking what determines weather they can sue or not, that im not sure either. We don’t have that in Canada, it would always be a criminal charge here.

It’s also tough to get a guilty verdict on a real rapist in a criminal court as a rapist will rape when alone with the victim. Physical evidence can disappear quickly.

But there’s too much misogyny in this thread. I’m sad for society going backward.

I'm not going to comment on whether I believe these rape allegations or not, but Zion needs to find better people to be around.

There are certain people in this world where drama always follows them and 90% of the time it is related to the type of people they hang around with.

That being said, if you're rich and famous, pay for all your side cooch, have NDAs on tap, film your activities, and/or vet your women well.

Huh? You mean the same why anyone can get struck by lightning or get killed by a falling air conditioner.

This doesn’t just “happen” to anyone. What does happen is a lot men rape women. And when they do, people run to defend them.

I don’t get why the default isn’t just let’s see this play out.

Yeah, it happens to primarily rich and famous Black men.

He is entitled to the presumption of innocence. You do not presume guilt or treat each accusation as though it were a he-said, she-said situation. She made the accusation; it is her responsibility to offer proof that it occurred.

The entire issue with these cases is that they aren't even intended to proceed to trial; rather, they are intended to publicly humiliate the defendant because, let's face it, the media is terrible. They don't bother investigating anything anymore before printing; they run with these stories because, like the other poster said, the mere allegation is news. Then, until they settle, the individual keeps disclosing more and more humiliating information publicly, and the press continues to report on it.

One thing to consider is that the burden of proof in a civil case is quite different from the one required in a criminal case

Oh really? See this I did not know. So its easier to prove his guilt in a civil trial? Seems shady lol

A criminal rape case, even more so among people who are in a relationship can be hard to show without a reasonable doubt. Evidence is harder to produce, especially after time has passed.

If one is trying to get the person to face some consequences vs no consequences, then a civil case can be a a means of doing that.

Easier said than done. When you are famous and have money, especially an athlete or musician. Women target these high profile stars whenever they go out. Its well documented among these high profiled stars. Has been for decades. Groupies gonna groupie.

My advice would be not to settle down until late 30s. But be more selective about who they take to bed. Keep the receipts too. Because predatory behavior goes both ways by both genders.

Sadly, I had a friend in highschool who was matured physically beyond her age, and had a lot of physical attributes that people might find attractive. She would work her way backstage with artists, and bragged about sleeping with famous people. She was 15/16/17 at the time.

It was very odd (and sad) to me, but that is also a real thing, and while she had fake ID's and the works so she passed as over 18, she was underage and this was not acceptable.

That said, someone waiting years to come forward isn't really indicative of anything. There are a lot of reasons why people don't report these things right away.

Yeah money

If someone did something like this to me I'm reporting immediately. Why wait?

If this was a regular person with no money I bet it would have been reported immediately.

Guilt, shame, embarrassment, etc...

I run a mental health facility and work with children, adolescents, and adults. Unfortunately I've had a lot of cases of rape, sexual assault, and abuse. There are a lot of people who wait years or never come forward at all.

I call this the "burning building analogy".

If someone escaped a burning building and unfortunately left a wife or other lover one to perish, there would be so many people saying, "I would never of left my wife". But it's so easy to say, "I would have done this" but you truly don't know what you would do in a life or death situation.

I've consumed a lot of true crime media. If you listen to the victims of these sort of crimes that turned out to be verified, you can easily understand why a lot of victims don't come forward immediately, especially when there is money and power involved.

therealbig3 wrote:But why is it Zion getting accused and brought up in this mess?

There have been much bigger stars than Zion, who have clearly slept with a bunch of sleazy women, like Jordan and Magic. How come people aren't coming out years later accusing them of rape? What about LeBron and Wade? Melo?

Can't tell me these guys didn't sleep around, but Zion is the one getting accused of rape? Outside of NBA fans, most people don't even know who he is. If it's as simple as a gold digger looking to make some money, there are MUCH bigger fish to fry.

If it’s Moriah Mills, I’m sure you’ve seen how she acted when he broke it off and had a baby, or all the other crazy nonsense that ensued after with her trying to blackmail him, pretend she tattooed his name on her face, etc.

If it’s not Moriah Mills, it’s a totally different thing IMO. She just has 0 credibility at this point and has been trying to burn him for years now, and finds new ways to stay relevant. The ham fisted “victim” video was cringe as hell, but I couldn’t tell if she was outing herself as the accuser, or piggybacking on this to get a little more social media engagement.

But if it’s some other woman stepping forward, I’m not saying he’s automatically guilty, but I won’t immediately feel like it’s just him being targeted by a psycho scorned ex lover.

It's a shame that this type of news story isn't uncommon for NBA fans. That being said, the discussion these topics produce aren't really basketball ones, as people tend to use these topics to express their opinions on a difficult subject matter. It's news about a basketball player, so some reaction on the general board is understandable, but once the discussion predictably gets into people's opinions on the broader subject in general, it's time to lock it up.
