Well Melo did say it, I was and am skeptical.

That's too bad.

Peelboy wrote:Hold on a sec people. Say Melo resigns at $22 starting, Gasol comes for $5. That's not a real contender this yr. Aaaaand......wait for it........

Knicks would have under contract for 2015-16: Melo (23 after raise), Gasol (5), JR Smith (6.4), Calderon (7.1). Add in a draft pick at about 1.5 and 7 cap holds at 507K each totals approx $47M. If the cap goes up $5M it'll be $68 meaning Knicks would have $21M to spend on FAs. Isn't a Love/Aldridge max deal just about $20?

So assuming guys don't resign and actually hit the market, then choose NY, your team would be: Melo-Gasol-Love/Aldridge/Gasol-Calderon-Smith with minimum salaried guys the rest of the way. Is that really even an ECF contender? Likely not. Then add in another guy the following year. Now possibly, but you're talking Melo at age 33 when the team starts to maybe be a contender. And Pau buying in to that same timeline (but he's older) and taking a salary cut to boot? Makes. No. Sense.

Makes more sense that after meeting w the Bulls and interested but wary of the salary cut, Bulls immediately head to LA to meet Pau and rumors fly about Pau replacing Taj. Then Melo wants to talk to Pau. Potentially about whether he'd join Bulls (or Knicks) because that could influence his decision.

Just as easily be that Melo likes Taj but is willing to replace him with Pau if a deal can be constructed where Melo gets his $18-20 starting salary and Pau takes the MLE to come play on a true contender.

I almost forgot about the cap going up. How will that affect how much we can offer melo if it goes up to 68M?

yup

Taj > Gasol

what is Melo gonna make personnel decisions for us now too?

Taj just became a two way player. Gasol was the second option on a championship team.

And yes, he wants say so on player personnel. Hes already said as much

You can keep guessing who the “mystery recruiter” at the #Lakers-#Melo meeting, but it is #OffTheRecord…#MeloWatch

It looks like there is a surprise recruiter at the Melo meeting.

We don't know ****.

We don't know if the Bulls offered him a number and if they did, we don't know what it was.

We don't know what Melo's mindstate is. We don't know what Phil wants for the Knicks.

We don't know anything apart from the rumors that NBA execs and agents spread to reporters..

Well he was jealous of 2010 and said he wanted to be courted.

So...maybe two birds with one stone?

If so, in some ways well played.

-Def Con 5 freak out

Basically, nothing. Everyone's acting like they've never played a high stakes game of poker before.

Phil going to LA is a sign of desperation, a late change of plans to try to undo what Chicago has done in terms of enticing Melo. If NY wanted to have the last meeting with Melo from the outset, it would have been included in Melo's announced itinerary.

Also, notice that Melo is not traveling to NY. The Knicks have to come to him.

The Bulls are still in this people. If GarPax truly did not discuss financials on Tuesday, then they had better get in there now with their plan.

Why in the world would Pau, at 34, go to knicks, and that too and such a substantial paycut? And play under his old teammate Fisher??

I don't see this at all. I'm keeping the faith till there's something definitive.

I've spent too much time on this to give up now!

Because his old coach is there, he might like Fisher, he already has two rings, and it is NY. Pau probably doesn't care much about chasing rings at this point and the Knicks have some familiar faces.

I'm pretty sure it has been reported he wants to play for a contender so...yeah lol

I wonder if Fisher is going to go the the meeting, and then leave and meet with the Lakers to see if he can somehow quit the Knicks and join them in classic Fisher style.

Absolutely ridiculous. This crap needs to stop before it gets worse. If he stays in NY, it's BECAUSE HE ALWAYS PLANNED TO not because Gar or Pax did anything wrong. Knicks will offer him $130 MILLION and he'd be stupid not to take that.
