That doesn’t seem realistic. Rubio would basically have to become like a 20/5/9 player to be in the running for MIP. He’s a career 11/4/8 guy, last season was 13/4/6, so where is the statistical jump going to come from to get him in the running?
Well there is a big difference between
“would be cool” and “will be cool”
If he helps lead the suns to the playoffs after a near decade drought... he would have a good story line.
I don't know man, most improved isn't really a story line type award, it's a what were your stats last season vs now, and then story line only matters after the stats. Look at the last five winners:
Siakam: 7/5/2 to 17/9/3
Oladipo: 16/4/3 to 23/5/4
Giannis: 17/8/4 to 23/9/5
McCollum: 7/2/1 to 21/3/4
Butler: 13/5/3 to 20/6/3
Leading the Suns to the playoffs wouldn't even mean he had any drastic improvement as a player. The Suns needed a PG badly, so adding a very solid despite flawed one helps them a lot. I don't even know if it would be perceived as him leading them since the Suns had the #1 pick 7'1 C who can make a good improvement in year two and likely will have a statistical improvement, and Booker is still just going to be 23 in the coming season. Still, if it is the most improved award we are looking at, a statistical jump will be needed somewhere. At the minimum we would have to be looking at something like him putting up something like 15-17 ppg, 4-5 rpg, 9-10 apg before he even gets considered, so if you are expecting something like that, then sure, just thought it was an odd award to think of for a guy like Rubio.
