The Lakers get to save that pick for another superstar player obviously.

Seriously. This got to be the worst trade I’ve ever seen in my life. Not even the BKN one beats this. This must be investigated. There’s no way a Superstar is traded for peaches like this. AD is not in anyways close to Luka in value.

Mavs ownership didn't want to pay Luka!

Bontemps called it the BIGGEST short in NBA history, meaning Mavs ownership didn't want to invest long-term in Luka. They saw that 5-year, $345 million contract extension as a bad investment.

If Danny Ainge knew of the trade then so did Lebron. How pathetic “oh he didn’t know” take.

Do the Mavs go after Jimmy now? Go for it this season again

The 46 people who voted that Dallas won the trade should be banned from RealGM for being so ignorant about the NBA.

Woke up to this. Did not expect.

Don't love the fit for the Lakers. I guess it improves their financial future. And of course Luka is very good. But they worsen appreciably on D, have no front court to speak of and Luka conflicts with Lebron a bunch in terms of style of play, unless James is committed to rocking it in the post and as a screener much more from now on. It isn't THAT bad, Luka was making it work with Kyrie, but it's not an ideal fit.

Definitely not a move I saw coming at all, hah.

Mavs Made out like Bandits

Post#1868 » by Camby_Bamby » Sun Feb 2, 2025 2:54 pm

Mavs have a QUESTIONABLE trade history, but made out like bandits this time.

Mavs become a legitimate title contended with a top 3 player in the league and arguably the best defensive player in the league who gets to play his desired position. They also get a up and coming two way athletic guard who loves to play defense in Christie. Could they have gotten more? Probably, but they have the pieces to win now.

Lakers get the Happy Meal, Brooklyn variant of James Harden who's even worse on defense. With Luka nearly being the size of an amateur sumo wrestler and monopolising the ball, it won't attract the stars that the Lakers want in the future.

Luckily you started with the "top 3 player" bit about AD, so we knew it wasn't worth reading the whole thing.

My guess is Plinko got a hold of Danny to make the numbers work. JHS is a FA after the season, to eating the contract for a couple of seconds (which Utah didn't have a plethora of) makes sense (suspect they'll waive him). After that, he probably texted Bron to get his sign off as there's little that happens on the Lakers without Bron-Bron's approval.

Name a team, they could have put together a better deal.

This deal should be stopped, immediately. For the integrity of the league.

Only way this makes any sense is if Luka told Dallas internally that he wants out and would only sign an extension in LA

If Luka wasn't probably leaving in 2026 and was prepared to tell teams it would be the Lakers which triggered this trade, the league should certainly veto this trade, and maybe should anyway.

There is no way it isn't more lopsided than:

Chris Paul to the Lakers, Pau Gasol to the Houston Rockets, and Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic, and a 2012 first-round draft pick to the Hornets.

Which was vetoed

Given nobody knew about it, that's not likely. Harrison had to have been ordered to make that deal.

Miriam Adelson was in the oligarchy luxury box at the Trump inauguration. Mark Cuban is #2 of followers total on X rival Bluesky and has turned pretty loudly liberal. I mean, it's Deep State stuff, but this makes no basketball sense at all for the Mavs. Even if you buy the "Conditioning and Defense and luxury tax" BS (Adelson worth $32 billion), the asset price is just laughably askew.

I know this is no politics zone, but this is an ownership move, not one some random GM thinks up out of the blue. People discount ownership motivations because we try to be fans and it gets harder when you realize not everyone's trying to win.
