What if they had just kept Lamoriello over Dubus?

The beginning of the end. Ujiris contract runs until end of next season I believe. Unless this team is contending at that time, he is going to be shown the door. Hell he might be shown the door or be pushed out like Anthopolous was irrespective of where the team is.

Now it's possible it was Shanahan who blocked the core 4 from being traded as there were rumours that Dubas wanted to trade Marner before he left toronto.

On the Raptors side, I wonder if they'll just let Masai's contract expire, and have the GM report directly to him. I don't like the idea of this guy being the person who they they take sports decisions to. Doesn't seem like he has a clue about sports in general.

Treliving was Larry Tanenbaum's hire. His dad is buds with Larry T, so I wouldn't say he has a long leash or anything. Personally I'm fine losing Marner for nothing. Nylander outproduces him in the playoffs from the 2nd line. We can't afford his raise, while continuing to get outclassed by teams with better depth. Teams win cups with less top end talent, so the Leafs need to figure out how to do more with less.

I would be fine with letting him walk (I’m not a big fan of Marner) if they had someone they could sign this offseason. The two best I see are Marchand and Bennett and I don’t see those guys leaving Florida. The biggest issue for the Leafs has been offense in the playoffs all these years when it shouldn’t be, and Marner has probably proven he’s useless in the playoffs. But, they are also about to lose what would have been a big trade chip for nothing.

No more no movement clauses. They need to create that policy

I'm fine with them taking a step back and would not like to swallow puke seeing either Marchand or Bennett in a Leaf jersey. The money can be used to absorb bad deals or one year overpays. We don't have to challenge for top of the standings next year. Worst-case scenario for me is signing Marner to his 13-14 million payday. Great player, but they have to stop this internal competition for leadership letters and dollars.

Letting Marner walk for nothing, and with no real avenues to anything like a comparable replacement, is just change for the sake of change.

Now I understand why doing the same thing over and over expecting different results seems unsustainable, and I think at this point it’s become a psychological albatross, but imo talent is still the king of pro sports and having a lesser team for the sake of having a different team is regression. I also don’t think we’re different enough replacing Marner with _____ to overcome either the speculative shortcomings of the roster or probable psychological issues that arise when this team faces elimination. It’s possible we don’t have a window as is, but lose no Marner (and potentially JT) for nothing is a step towards closing the possibility.

Are there any potential UFAs that people are thinking of to make up for Marner’s loss? Because we have neither the prospects nor the draft capital to achieve that any other way. In fact you could argue that if we intend to let Marner walk we should blow the whole thing up and load up on those two holes the organization currently has.

Feeling pretty cursed, tbh. The only team I support with any kind of upward trajectory is the Rockets; Leafs, Jays, Raps and Niners all appear to be going nowhere and/or downward.

Several recent teams have won Stanley Cups and/or gone on deeper playoff runs with way less top end talent. In the NHL, the hard cap is king. JT is either leaving or taking future salary commensurate with his declining production. This is an easier problem to fix. There are more of that out on the market than there are Marner's. The Marner problem is that he will be getting a raise to pay for his few remaining prime and post-prime years. The Leafs best path forward is to hold that salary on depth and take a small step back while regrouping or waiting for another big fish to come on the market.

The teams that are still alive just spend less on their top guys, meaning they can have more good players down the line-up.

Rumours are Marner turned down 8 x 13.5 Not sue how true that is, but given how the last negotiations went, I have no problem believing this. Marner at 14M is gross.

Disagree on the raps.

Also, the leafs have two above average to excellent goalies so could trade one. They have the contracts of Jarnkrok and Kampf and Robertson. Moving some combination of the above in trade could net a solid player or two.

If the leafs go with vets there are guys like Patrick Kane and Marchand available. There have been arguments made for Sam Bennett. They’ve got to re-sign Knies still, but on the plus side they have their buyouts and their d core locked up.
I believe in Masai.

You can let Marner go along with Tavares and make a pitch for Connor McDavid next year with that freed up space.

Or you could balance out the team - Pacioretty makes 800k but I could've sworn he outshined Matthews in the Florida series, who most likely retires this year. The only issue with that is filling up the roster with 2nd and 3rd tier players may result in poor regular season standings and may even jeopardize the playoffs.

The Leafs will make a profit either way with the generational wait for season tickets and the corporate renewals.

Florida has completely dominated Carolina. No doubt some changes need to be made but we can’t forget the fact we have a very good team.

The East in the NHL is like the East in the NBA. Florida is Boston. The West is like the West in the NBA. Let's see how Florida does against the West. Especially Dallas.

edit: Carolina is the injured Cavs. They traded away the best player in the playoffs after just acquiring him for valid fears he would bolt.

edit: plus bye bye Torts. that's always a good thing. that russian rookie is doing a special drunken vodka fire dance this summer back home to a bon fire me thinks.

Yes my team...since the early 80's and all due to the long Cooperall! iykyk

I hated Torts. At least I like Tocchet from his playing days.

And yeah, Michkov is good!

You say former coach...when?

 I'm not even sure if I can ice skate. I meant I'm a Canucks fan. yeah Torts bites.

edit: and yes, I followed that draft. I thought when the Flyers snatched the pick, "slow clap", well done.

Considering how strong Floridas is playing, the Leafs were probably the second best team in the playoffs.

I don't know if anyone coming out the West can beat Floridas at this point.

Dallas can. They beat the Avs, Jets, and we'll see with Edmonton. I don't think the Oilers can. I hope whoever wins the West does because I don't like the Panthers.

Interesting to see in the 20s the Florida based teams have dominated the finals, and one win from Las Vegas.

Because hockey players are mostly not attention whores they will most likely shine in smaller markets.

Markets like Toronto are profitable but horrible

If im Marner Id quiety get a cup somewhere else.
