If I was the Wiz I'd go with Porter easily. But I hope you go with Bennett just so my Bobcats can't take him.

Call me crazy, but IMO,Bennett is not much better than Draymond Green.

Surprised by most people's opinions on here. Porter is definitely the safer pick and is more polished at this point. Porter reminds me of a Tayshaun Prince (glue guy, future possible 6th man, jack of all trades - master of none). His potential is so much lower than Bennett. I see ZERO star potential in Porter. Zero.

Bennett reminds me totally of Larry Johnson, and not just because they both went to UNLV. If Bennett figures out how to use his body and athleticism, he'll be a matchup nightmare because of being a "tweener" type guy. What he lacks in height, he makes up for in strength and length. It's probably gonna depend how the team who drafts him decides to use him.

It's a high risk, high reward debate between the two IMO.

For the Wizards... Porter

Porter is okay, but in any other Draft he wouldnt be a top10 pick, or he shouldnt, he has no star power.
He'll be similar to Prince, maybe a mix between Prince and Turkoglu, not sure, but that's it.

Bennett can be really good if he fall in the right place, I'd like to see him in the Bobcats, MKG would help him tremendously.

I agree plus these "safe" picks dont always turn out so safe.... I remember Foye was thought of as the
saftest pick in the draft and analysts said at worst hes a 15 ppg scorer and very solid starter

Aside from passing what does Porter do that well? hes not that fast or athletic hes not gonna be able to create his own shot in the league i dont see this extremely safe pick

Can catch and shoot, moves well without the ball, is a good defender and plays intelligently. I think his ability is being undersold a little bit. No he wont be able to create his shot well, not many in this draft will be able to, but he knows how to move and use his teammates to get open. Once he gets his weight up, i could easily see him being a deng type player. He doesnt have the bulk of a young deng, but he has the length and better shooting ability at the same stage.

Bennett's game reminds me a lot of a Tobias Harris, except he's bigger. The way he attacks the rim, shoots, has great range. He looks to be a great scorer. For those of you complaining about his lack of post moves or back to basket game, c'mon, what 4 these days plays like that anyway? It's all about the stretch 4. His defense is suspect mainly because he doesn't really try.

I think what people need to realize is that your drafting these guys for two very different reasons.

Otto Porter clearly has a higher floor but also has limited upside and probably will never be a "building block" type player. If your building your team around Porter then what is your ceiling?

For Bennett, your drafting based on ceiling. Bennett is a guy that has the potential to be "star" (whatever than means) or something close to it. Having said that, we know his weakness's and there is a good to very good chance, depending on what you think of his game, that he might get there and if he doesn't, then he will probably struggle to be a role player in this league.

If your the Cavs or the Wizards I don't think it makes sense to take Porter. Wall/Beal or Kyrie/Irving/Thompson isn't a strong enough core to be a title contender, so you might as well take the chance on Bennett. If he works out then you really have a great core that could contend or come close to contending in the East and if he doesn't, there are always good role players, maybe not as good as Porter but still, available through free agency or in the mid-late picks in the 1st round

What everyone of you have forgot to mention is......Bennett was a Freshman! You cannot put basements on Freshmen, only ceilings. I like Bennett over Porter. Porter is thin and lacks athleticism..... I think he is the overrated one of this draft.

I hope he goes before No. 5.

Bennett on the Wizards makes a lot of sense. A stretch 4 that can drive, get his own shot, rebound and hit the 3 is exactly what the Wizards need on offense. The question of course is his defense. The Wizards already have experience dealing with players with asthma, but aren't the best at development. The argument that wins though is the idea that the Wizards still need another elite level talent to contend. Bennett and Noel are really the only players in this draft that have the potential for this.

Bennett averaged an efficient 16/8 in 27 minutes as a freshman with most people saying he is lazy. it took Porter 35 minutes to put up 16/7.5 as a sophomore. Their ceilings aren't even comparable, and to me thats what you draft for 1-5. Porter might have a decent floor, but why go for the high floor player at 3? There are plenty of ways to get Otto Porter level guys that don't require such a heavy investment

reapaman wrote:Wizards should go Alex Len and consider no one else. You guys really need a center for the future because Okafor, Nene and whoever you got either won't take you far or won't be there much longer. Alex Len is a legit center and is both a better prospect and safer pick than any center this year or mabey any center that is projected next year. He can give you solid production offensively and as a rim protector (I know he's injured but its nothing serious).

There will be plenty of PF's next year that could be as good or better then bennett and as much as I like porter (much better than bennett), your probabley gonna end up trading him down the road for salary purposes to fit in a good big (or 2) and a quality bench to go along with wall and beal (having 3 wings as your top core guys early on is not a good idea if you can avoid it).

I agree that Bennett is a reach at #3, but so is Len.

Porter is the guy I would take, but if you wanted a center I would take Adams, who I think is getting criminally underrated.

pace and style of play are big factors in stats. g'town plays a slow down archaic style that is not very stats friendly.
i dont look at straight production. i look at how valuable the player is to his team. who do you think was the more valuable player? who contributes to his team in more areas of the game? who do you think can contribute more to his NBA team? to me the answer is easily porter.

imo, their ceilings ARE comparable when you factor in the likelihood of them reaching their potential. bennett might have more pure potential based on his athleticism, but i wouldn't consider porter a "low" potential player because of his size for his position, his intangibles and his skill. his intangibles and 2 way play are very lu deng-like. athleticism is the only thing usually associated with potential, but to me, a player's intangibles are what increases the likelihood that he reaches his potential. just think of a player like jr smith. all the potential in the world, but will never reach it because of how stupid he is. same goes for javale mcgee, denadre jordan, michael beasley, jennings, etc. all will likely be held back from reaching their potential because they lack intangibles.

and if you wanna factor age into potential, porter is actually younger than bennett.

No I don't. I want to factor in experience and exposure to college coaching and play....Porter has more of it.

Pace is a small factor but doesn't nearly make up the entire difference. Bennett is simply tiers above Porter as a scorer and rebounder imo. Porter is a better fit for Wash and Bennett is a better fit for Charlotte though so I hope they pick him. If Bennett goes to Wash he likely is labeled a disappointment but going to Charlotte in between Biyombo and Gilchrist he'd have Lillard-esque free reign over front court scoring and no objection from anyone. I think he'd be a ROY favorite here

Can Bennett play as a large SG/SF?

Because we have a really nasty record against tweeners within the past new years.

Playing Bennett as a sg/sf is the way to ruin him early. Let the guy play his natural position. Don't draft him if you don't want him at PF.

Bennett in now way, shape or form can play SG. Him playing SF is already pushing his skills outside of their comfort zone, but him as a SG? Asking for trouble. And in his case, trouble would be flipping burgers at the In-N-Out Burger on Maryland in Vegas.
