I'd rather pay veterans minimum or near minimum for a warm 6'11 or 7ft body than max or near max for an elite center.

What an elite center brings over what one you can get for the minimum isn't worth the sacrifice in cap space IMO.

In todays NBA that money needs to be spent on guards/wings.

I think the DeAndre Jordan contract is an abomination and I don't want anything to do with contracts like that. Can't spend that much money on that limited a player.

DeMarcus Cousins
DeAndre Jordan
Jusuf Nurkic
Greg Monroe

Those guys will all demand max or near-max.

Nerlens Noel
Clint Capela
Aron Baynes

These guys might not be superstars but they'll also get a good chunk of change. Can't teach size, even in today's NBA somebody's gotta be tall in the middle.

Nurkic and Monroe aren't sniffing max level money.

Noel will be getting somebodies MLE.

Capela has to hope someone throws a huge offer sheet his way or else the Rockets should play hadball at 10m or else match any other offer.

Baynes will be lucky to clear 5m per.

There is practically zero cap room out there. Maybe 7 or 8 teams at most with more than MLE. RFAs are especially screwed as teams aren't going to tie up their limited money on an offer sheet.

Everybody outside the elite is going to be scrabbling for exceptipns. We are going to see some very very disappointed players and a lot of guys coming off rookie deals that should have signed their extensions.

Uhhh no, cousins is and should be a max guy and there aren't any wings to spend that money on, people love to act like big men no longer matter well they do its just more great wings, I'd rather max dmc than say paul george this summer

Yea, I guess I should have been more clear, I meant more limited centers.

Embiid, Cousins and Marc Gasol are dudes who are still worth the money. I meant guys like Jordan, Baynes, Capela, Noel and Monroe... guys who don't bring much besides defense and dunks.

this is all well and good except you are all forgetting an important factor:

dumbass f'kin GM's

Mason Plumlee had no appreciable leverage but he got $13M

So in a world with 30 reasonable GM's, there's gonna be a drastic market correction in the price of bigs. There aren't 30 reasonable GM's. There's maybe a handful, and the rest are varying levels of stupid.

lastly:
INTERNAL leverage is a factor. Look at Nurkic. He hasn't been great, he's been solid. FG% is ****. Team is around .500. A 15-20M contract would be luxury tax hell - BUT

if they let him walk, they don't have a replacement. They don't have cap space to acquire a replacement. They don't have great assets to trade for one.

So . . . the market outside for Nurk probably isn't that great, but PDX can't afford to lose him

Thats why Olshey will give him something like 5/$85 or thereabouts, the blazers will be in cap and tax hell and they'll never be more than a first round exit

and then Olshey will get another contract extension probably

I dunno about that. Nurk shouldn't get max, but this is the team that maxed Evan turner and matched Alan Crabbe. If he doesnt get max I expect he will receive close to it

Anybody that gives any substantial amount of money to Monroe, Noel or Baynes should be fired on the spot

The main issue is big used to be overpaid but now they're value seems to be getting in order

If I had to guess...

DeMarcus Cousins : Max
DeAndre Jordan : Max
Jusuf Nurkic : Maxish (close to max with incentives)
Greg Monroe : 60/4
Nerlens Noel : 24/2 (second year player option)
Clint Capela : Max
Aron Baynes : 60/4 (Team option on year 4)
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

How you have Greg Monroe in a tier above Clint Capela is beyond me.

How much is a center that cannot defend or rebound really worth? First you need to master the basics of being a Center, then you can have fun shooting three's.
