If Kawhi leaves next year, start the tanks.

Good move.

Poeltl is going to be amazing for them.

You have to give up something of value though

I gave it a B. There is the possibility this could go well but also a huge risk.

I love DeMar as a person and representative of Toronto sports, but Kawhi is better at everything basketball related. I have the same worries as everyone else.. his health and mental makeup, I have a hard time figuring out how one screws up a relationship with one of the model franchises in sport.

This is really a win win

If this trade bombs big time, it kick starts the tank a year early. If all goes well we're in the promised land.

Even if Kawhi leaves after reaching the promised land, the trade was well worth it especially with the price we paid.

On top of that, Masai finally took a risk and made his bold move

BTW before I add A+ and B+ there were 24 votes for A and not a single other vote

I'm just saying the optics look bad because of the loyalty thing and the whole Masai lied thing. Like I said, on basketball merits it's a home run.

Best case scenario: Kawhi Leonard continues to play as an MVP candidate and Defensive Player of the Year winner and re-signs. Raptors contend for Finals appearances. In that case, this is highway robbery.

Worst case scenario: Kawhi Leonard has an OK season, Raptors lose in second round, and we lose him to the Lakers or Clippers. In that case, I will be disappointed, but will still support this trade. It is worth the risk.

The only part that I am upset about is DeRozan, but we could have traded him for prime Jordan and Pippen and I would still be sad to see DeRozan go.

That's why I gave it an A and not A+

But this trade works on so many levels. The only concern I have is organization reputation if Kawhi screws us.

Yes but it still hurts. We watched a 2009 rookie who can only dunk to a perineal all star. He’s a class act too and loved the organization. I hope we retire his jersey and he deserves nothing less but a standing ovation.

B+. A+ would have been selling them JV instead of DD. But you can’t have everything in life.

Depends on how much homework the Raps management did on Kawhi’s mental and physical state.

F for **** stupid ass move. Man's ain't even healthy, 1 year rental then he's gone. Yea we get cap space, but no way in hell we use that to sign another all star caliber player, it will get wasted on some random bum. Back to the **** stone age for the Raptors. Some of you here sayin East is ours, lmao gtfo we're gonna be chasing 9th after a year lmao! So many other teams will be better than us

KAWHI has no desire to be in Toronto. He's a diva who is unreliable. He can't speak up for himself. His camp is toxic as hell. He will leave in one year. What's stopping him from pulling the same **** he did last year to us?

Obviously Kawhi is miles ahead of Demar as a player, but at least Demar will play every game. I'm not so sure about Kawhi. If he pulls the same **** his trade stock will drop exponentially, but you best believe a team will still give him another big contract, definitely not the max though.

Read on Twitter

I have my concerns. I don't think you can convince him to stay. He wanted to be in LA the whole time. When he leaves, we basically gave up Demar, Yak who is a promising young big, and a 2019 pick for Danny Green.

Masai rents a guy for 1 year who might not even play this year while giving up valuable assets.

Big risk. Something I did not expect from Masai. Hope it works but I'm worried.

The main difference is how secure the Celtic organization is/was. The fanbase couldn't give a f about losing Isaiah. And he wasn't even in the conversation of most valuable team assets.

Plus Kyrie was locked for 2 years...

A+ You just got a top 5 player. And you didn’t give up any of your top young players. DeMar is a shooting guard that can’t shoot or play defense. This is the dramatic shakeup we needed.

Kawhi leaves then we rebuild a year earlier. Whats the issue?

I do not think it will go down like that. Aug 2 is when SGA can be traded from the Clips. I expect a deal where the Clips trade for Kawhi and his bird rights and Raps get SGA, Tobias and someone like Sindarius Thornwell. The trade of DD and Poetl will be judged on the merits of a flip to LAC. IMHO. Cannot fathom MLSE entertaining another VC situation. Watch for the August 2 date.

Putting aside my respect for Demar Derozan as a fan of him and just looking at this analytically it's:

A) A stronger all-in attempt for next year than what we had before in the first year of Lebron's departure from the East.

B) Something that Paul George's choice to sign in OKC adds a new wrinkle to. Very unlikely he re-signs with us past the year but everyone said that about Paul George in OKC and 50 million is no small thing.

C) Our window was really 2 years anyway so it accelerates the rebuild if he goes by a year. We needed to sign our vets to 3 year deals to keep them but if we aren't really moving up after this year and if he leaves then might as well tear it down and get lotto picks anyway.

D) We still have some modest flexibility to re-trade Kawhi Leonard at the deadline if things turn south and get some assets if we ask for less than the Spurs did of LA and Lebron wants him there aggressively.

E) It adds some fun and intrigue to the year.

F) Shows Toronto at least is willing to take some bold risks.

For all of those reasons I graded it a A.
