last year with westbrook, in spite of all the roster disruptions in the beginning and maybe the worst roster in the nba outside of westbrook and beal, they ended the season with the #3 offense
They were 17th in offensive efficiency last year, slightly below average, no where near #3.
that was the sum total and dismissing that they had the most disruptive start due to covid etal other than the celts, and minus bryant for the whole year. once the league settled down that is when the wiz picked up. it's that simple. do you look at a team overall of how it ends?
You brought that on yourself with your phrasing. You would need to specify how long of a stretch they were the #3 offense if your intent is to say they had a stretch towards the end like that. If you just say they ended the season with the #3 offense, the assumption is going to be that you are saying by the end of the season they were ranked 3rd in Ortg. I don't believe there was any point where they were the 3rd most efficient offense though.
Now, if the metric you are using is ppg, that's fine, but that's not necessarily ranking how good an offense is. The Wizards led the league in pace and were 3rd in ppg. They were 17th in Ortg though. This season they are 24th in pace 21st in ppg and 18th in Ortg.
I suppose we could rank offense by ppg if we're simply looking at who scores the most and not who scores the best, but that's just telling us that Russ's presence had them playing faster, it's not telling us that the offense was producing better on a per possession basis, soo....
