ya this is a dumass idea. silver is a moron. just like he ruined the 2016 finals between cavs-warrios by suspending dray instead of fining him. he just could not let the warriors beat lbj back to back... but than karma hit that pos where it hurts the most, as gsw went back to back and destroyed lbjs dream of winning 6 titles. i hope teams bench all there players for this tourney and plays gleaguers.

You definitely can if you make the reward attractive enough. For example:

Whoever wins the Midseason Tourny gets 1 of thd 2 Finals spots. The winner of the end of year playoffs gets the other. Those 2 teams play for the Chip.

*If the same team wins both Tournys then no need for the Series betweenbthe 2 Champions since it's the same team

I am sure glad you are not part of the NBA Governers board, that is an awful idea

It is really sad that Silver is putting stupid ideas to make the game worse, I miss the old days of basketball

As long as the regular season isn't extended - see no issue with it. Think even without significant reward, teams will play hard and want to win because the majority of NBA players are competitors.

You could easily trim six games from the regular season without impacting competitive balance to support a tournament.

The amount and powerfulness of the dumb ideas in this thread is amazing.

The mid season tournament is all about Silver going after gambling dollars. That’s it. Top to bottom. His big revenue add for owners is gambling. Stern wouldn’t go there, Silver does.

What Silver doesn’t get is that players won’t care, nor will teams. Are there going to be rings? Parades? Prestige? Nah. Congrats you’re the mid season tournament champs and…what? Pointless. It’s a laughable idea.

The way American sports work is one champion per season. Silver doesn’t have the power to change that, but he won’t care as long as there are brackets and people bet on it and the NBA gets a cut.

I don’t like this Idea, but these players brought it on themselves by taking rest days and not trying during the regular season

Silver is just doing his job trying to bring life back into the regular season where the NBA makes the bulk of its money

Radio host in Sacramento suggested the tournament structure should follow the WNBA's Commissioner's cup. Apparently how it works is there are a number of games chosen from your 82 game schedule designated a Commissioner's cup game. Players don't play extra games or log additional travel miles. It's a creative way to incentivize regular season games.

This has been known for awhile. It makes the idea even dumber.

It’s not a random Tuesday Kings/Pistons game, it’s a round in a tournament! Ok. Whatever. It’s just stupid.

Stop it with the gimmicks. The play in worked well and they're going to keep it. Next is the FT and posession for fast break fouls. I like both. That's enough for now.

So i watch a lot of 2kleague it might work similar to that

Where lower teams or upper teams have some type of tournament vs each other and shows on their regular season records.

If this is supposed to be used to not encourage tanking. I would emphasize lower bottom 8 teams to play for something.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

The only way I would be interested in a weird random in season tournament like this is if it was expanded to include international teams. Maybe a 64 team international team tournament. Would be interesting to see NBA teams playing with international rules.

Midseason champion gets double the salary of all the players in their roster.

Watch these players chase what it's been about all along.

Home court advantage in playoffs regardless of seed

There just aren't many positives to it.

If you're not going to pay the players big bucks the only incentive for them to play the tournament would be for playoff implications. For instance, the winner gets home court advantage throughout regardless of seed, or winner gets a guaranteed top 4 seed regardless of record etc.

The problem with that is the team that wins is going to get into all-time load management mode knowing they've secured a playoff spot which will ultimately defeat the purpose of the tournament.

He did say it was RC Buford's fault, and I can't disagree. What the Spurs did with Duncan was highly strategic, but it set a horrible precedent.

I wonder how the fans of the NBA felt when they heard they were going to implement a 3 point line back in 1979? I'm sure there were plenty who did not have the foresight. The NBA is a business that needs to continually adapt to the changing landscape of its fans. Who knows what the kids in the future will enjoy.

I also dont understand why it would be an issue for players if the games still counted towards the teams overall standing. You still have to play those games anyway, so why not group them together with another few accolades attached to them? They know these accolades give the media more to talk about.

Would I rather watch a sudden death tourney over the All Star weekend? Heck yeah.

Just like the play in

NBA only cares about extra games for advertising dollars.

At this point there's going to be a playoffs at the end of every month.

I wish we could get someone in there to protect the game and care about it, this is basically what happens when you let corporations run everything and don't have checks and balances on them for the product.

NBA being run too much like a corporation and not by someone who understands the product and cares about the consumers of the product.

You could give all players on the winning team a lump bonus midseason.

Players making 25 mil or higher each recieve a bonus of 4% of their contract value that year, while players making from 5.00whatev million to 24.999 million get a one million dollar check, and everyone making below 5 million for the year gets a $750,000 check.
Same for coaches or maybe $500k.
(edit: on 2nd thought, give these things to the actual champs at the the end of the year, and instead give equivalent to half of that package to the mid season tourney winners )

Then give them home court in the playoffs regardless of their seeding, unless the team they are matched up against is a top 2 seed, or won the season series against the tourney-winning team.

And I liked the idea proposed of getting the 31st pick there being 61 picks in the draft. Give them 31, and a $15 mil trade exception that wont count againsts the cap, that expires at the deadline, so if they want they can trade both at the deadline for a role player, or just keep the pick.
