He may look bad, but he's pretty much been a league-average center for five years in the league. A player coming into his athletic prime doesn't generally just stop being who he is overnight. This year's stats he's had only NINE total minutes, and he has been indeed horrid. But that's not enough time for the stats to mean anything.
For every missed coverage or turnover, how many opponent's shots simply aren't taken because of his ridiculous wingspan (only 2 inches shorter than Wemby)? Apparently enough that along with his 3pt% reb% and blk%... he comes out as an okay player. Enough to make up for the boneheaded plays that stand out and are easy to see. Not everything he does shows up in the counting stats, but they do show up in the advanced stats - where he's not great but good enough.
Maybe he did turn into the worst player ever overnight - after all more surprising and worse things have happened to this franchise.
We had two #1 overall picks turn into non-shooters on us, and we've had two other players almost die in the past few years. But it's unlikely that Bamba suddenly really is a NET -37 player instead of the NET +5 player he's been for the past 5 years. He's probably the same player he's always been. The strongest evidence to the contrary isn't his horrible stats in 9 minutes... it's the Sixers jersey he wears and the accompanying curse.
