If you dislike him, try to remember he is playing an exaggerated version of himself. Sometimes when they cut away to a wide shot, you see he can’t even help from laughing himself. It’s entertainment. I’ve watched Austin Rivers, who has learned the game from birth, simply be overwhelmed by the personalities of Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins. Just having the info isn’t enough for ESPN to put you on the air.

That said, I give him credit for trying to learn and improve himself to provide a better understanding of the game. Last year, Jefferson went to Referee School. He covers games as an announcer. When I listen to bigger names like Shaq, Barkley and Perkins, none of whom even try to learn the NAMES of the players on the team they are supposed to analyze, Jefferson stands out even more that he is trying to provide actual analysis.

Try to ignore his schtick, and you might like him more by what he has to say. I don’t always agree, but he’s much better than most of the talking heads.

I didn’t have as much of a problem with Mark Jackson as most seem to. Jeff Van Gundy was ok but too negative. You can seemingly always count on him to complain and whine every 5 minutes.

It's a rant. A Vangundian Rant, to be precise.

I agree though. RJ is pretty good on the mic. Maybe his voice isn't the best but the lyrics are tight.

I like him, but he needs someone on the same vibe to riff with that can also reel it back when needed.

Because he’s old school and keeps it real. They don’t want ppl calling out the nba

disagree, all I heard him do was complain.

He wouldn’t even crack the top 10 of people that I think suck at ESPN and shouldn’t be allowed to do on-air commentating/analysis.

ESPN is legit garbage if you’re looking for intelligent, in-depth bball analysis, but RJ is hardly the worst offender or even close to it.

I just can't deal with the constant "Vangundian ranting"/whining/complaining, there's enough of that amongst fandom as is..

Thanks,

not as bad as a random VINCE CARTER

the nba is rampant with ill equipped ex-jock commentators

so turn off the volume. do you really need someone to tell what's going on in a,,,, basketball game????

First u have to get rid of the Warriors commentators then maybe u move on firing somebody else. They are the cheesiest, most terrible combo in the f. league. Just plain awful.

I don't get ESPN here, we get a few of the random local feeds first on TSN most days it seems. But when its a national game and I do hear RJ, I like him.

I think Roucco, Jefferson & Reddick would be a good triad as ESPN’s lead announces once Breen retires.

I don't understand not liking Richard Jefferson. He's bright, articulate, funny, thoughtful. He's among the best of the broadcast ex-players. But everybody has a right to their view.

I didn't like him that much last night. He seemed to not know anything about the Nuggets. But I try as hard as I can to never watch national televised games so I don't have much exposure to the ESPN guys. I don't really like any of them.

I’ve pondered this as well.

The best I can come up with is .. “to make viewers think they are smart?”
