What a **** show
Fired their championship coach Vogel, brought in Ham and kept him even after a bad year and missed the boat on good coaches like Nurse and Udoka, get publicly rejected by Hurley and now hire a coach with zero experience to lead 40 year old LeBron

Re: Woj: Lakers hire Redick for HC
Redick is smart, give him a chance. Plus he's going to co-coach with Lebron, it will be like having two player coaches on the team. I expect similar dynamics to when Kidd started out on Brooklyn (veteran laden). If he can have a Kidd like coaching career, he'll be fine.

That's what you get when you bring on LeBron.

This is coming out of the left field. I didn't see it coming, Redick. What a surprise.

I’m 100% sure this will fail. Steve Kerr didn’t have experience either but had a generational squad. JJ is sharp but that roster isn’t good enough with no upside. Only move they can make is trading AD. LeBron is a flight risk at any moment.

Just make Lebron player/coach and be done with it. Bronny is going 17th overall isn't he?

I think Redick is going to do great.
He’s smart, knows basketball, and the players will respect him.

Re: Woj: Lakers hire Redick for HC
Recent former players with no assistant coaching experience are Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and now Reddick.
Didn't work out for Nash and Kidd got fired twice before he got settled.
Others I can think of are Marc Jackson, Doc, and Steve Kerr, though he was an executive.
Any others? Seems a mixed bag though mostly negative outcomes.

Wasn't JKidd an assistant with the Lakers under Vogel? Pause.

Re: Woj: Lakers hire Redick for HC
Is this really a good career move if he actually wants to be a coach?
Sure if he wants the payday (he's already rich)
but that team is going absolutely NO WHERE and will be rebuilding in a year or 2..
and probably the most scrutinized job possible
not ideal for a first job, did he not learn from Steve Nash?
likely fired in 2 yrs or less
I'm a fan of Reddick and think he could actually be a good coach, too bad

Re: Woj: Lakers hire Redick for HC
Bold move by Redick taking a crap job.
That said I think he is a guy who has the charisma needed to survive the LA market. He's also got excellent bball IQ and as long as he gets himself a good staff he will be fine.
Of course, that said he will still be the fall guy in 2 years when Rob Pelinka has to explain that a old Lebron and a fragile big couldn't win another championship.

They have their whipping boy if things don't pan out. Not really a good place to try and break into the league, imo.

He must know this will go badly for him and he doesn't mind the payday. At the very least it's content for his podcast.

I mean worse comes to worse he gets fired and goes back to his old gig while collecting the cheques from the Lakers.
Being fired as a HC in the NBA isn't a bad thing financially.

i'm sure they're not delusional enough to think he's gonna turn that team to a contender.
no coach can do that. you need talent to win.

Re: Woj: Lakers hire Redick for HC
JJ Redick has path to being a good coach. Dude's intelligent, articulate, and knows the game. However, he compromised himself in relation to Lakers HC position by doing that podcast with LeBron James then being hired so soon after. Just not a good look. I mean, which Lakers player isn't going to look at that and not think "dude's just a pawn for LeBron"? Whether that's true or not? That's a lot to overcome in terms of earning the team's respect as HC and he probably knows it so it's a curious choice to still go for it. The whole thing just smells fishy including them supposedly going after Dan Hurley right after Shams broke news that JJ Redick was a done deal. Almost feels like it was a move executed for them to be able to say "well, we tried" to give it to an experienced coach but he said no so they had no choice but to pivot to Redick. Try to deflect finger-pointing a little, to no avail.
Plus, he's risking losing all momentum he had going with his podcast and with ESPN. He was building something real and substantial in that space that IMO had a lot better long-term outlook than a Lakers HC position. But I guess it's his dream to coach because he's been going after few open spots before this including our own.
To his credit, I think he'll be better at building/managing relationships with the players than a guy like Steve Nash.
