There is some truth to this though. For one, the pick needed to become available for this trade to happen and MPJ needed to shed some years on that contract. They also needed to find a team with cap space willing to do the deal.
This is totally true, and I didn't think about that. The MPJ trade absolutely would not have happened without that first round pick, which just became available. Good call.
He did have access to the 2031 1st though, so maybe it could've still been doable. But it's also very possible the Nets just wanted more back then and weren't willing to budge at the deadline. Impossible to really know what kind of options Booth had in the past, but it obviously doesn't look great for him that Tenzer and Wallace were able to get so much done in such a short period.
Booth did seem to have a large ego and believed too firmly in the idea of building through the draft with late 1sts and 2nds, used on low upside upperclassmen. It's not a bad idea to fill in a few spots on the roster with those kind of players and contracts...but you can't expect to compete for a championship when half your roster is made up of those guys, along with other wasted roster spots. And to make it worse, he literally sabotaged his own asset pool just to dump the vets he did have, to try to force Malone into playing his **** "prospects." It's sad to think a couple of Jokic's prime seasons got wasted just because of Booth's arrogance and incompetence.
