One preseason game, and for $7 million I think you have to.

I was excited about Dick but he really hasn't shown much at all.

Last night he drew a double team 20 feet from the basket. The way Raptor fans see Gradey isn't the way the league sees Gradey. Picking up his option is a no brainer.

I can't imagine they wouldn't. You don't need to show a lot to earn $7M in the NBA. He's still tradeable if nothing else.

Yeah there’s already a thread on the GB from September 30th titled Dick grew 2 inches in the off-season.

GD started the season last year going crazy, let's not pretend like we haven't seen it in him.

He was 5th overall in sophomore scoring.

I'm less concerned about his size. More interested in how he uses it.

I saw a bit of aggressiveness and seems like he's gotten a bit stronger and faster just needs to be smarter on his drives. He was getting called for charges like Bargnani out there.

Even still, you want Gradey Dick getting called for charges. It's a problem when it's Stanley Johnson. Scorers should always be credited for trying to draw contact.

EDIT: He had 7 offensive fouls last year. Like, maybe the most overrated thing to be mad about with a player they are that infrequent.

He's always going to be a bad individual defender because of his weak/narrow frame and he's also quite bad as a team defender - frequently gets lost off-ball, buried in screens, over-reactive. The real problem is he hasn't shown any consistency as a shooter either. Your classic situational 3 point specialist, but he's not even a reliable shooter lol.

Maybe he cut his hair so he'd look bigger?

There's still something there. I wouldn't give up on him abruptly but I'd reconsider it after the rookie deal. The key thing is where the improvement is coming from and being shown on a consistent basis.

This pretty much it. There are so many non-defending shooters that I would rather have. GTJ is one.of them.

If you can't defend, then you better be elite offensively at something.

He lacks toughness on both ends of the floor.

His jersey will sell, but he is pretty much with no value having a 7m contract for the 8th or 9th man.

If Dick knows a way to make other people’s Gradey’s grow by two inches permanently in one summer, he’s in the wrong profession.
I believe in Masai.

Of course, we will watch this going forward and judge him accordingly, but last season is irrelevant now. So far, he is shooting 47% from three through the first four pre-season game. You often see dramatic performance improvements from Year 2 to Year of a rookie scale. In the season opener next Wednesday, you will see just such a case in Jalen Johnson of Atlanta who made a huge leap from Year 2 to Year 3, going from an intriguing yet limited usage player with a potentially high ceiling to a near max-salary franchise player (I'd trade Trae before I trade JJ). All of Johnson's percentages went up in Year 3 even as his usage rate rose dramatically. (I'm hoping that in time our other first round draft picks also have such success as they advance through their rookie scale.)

Masai and Bobby still picked up Ochai's 4th year option after he played in summer league before his 3rd season in the NBA (which is rare for rookie scale guys) and still stunk up the joint. It had gotten to a point where even smart Raptors reporters like Blake Murphy were thinking they might not pick it up, and they still did.

Despite how seemingly out you are on Gradey now, it's pretty much impossible that Bobby won't pick up Gradey's 4th year option by the October 31st deadline. The org actually still projects him as IQ's starting backcourt partner of the future lol.
